Tracy (tracykitn) | 461 comments It's definitely worth checking out; your local library probably has it! I have to admit, I'm not too fond of anything else he's written, but I really do love Artemis. He's a thief and a schemer, and yet somehow manages to do the right things.

He has a new noir novel out and I almost went for that and then I thought...what you really want to try is Artemis Fowl. Of course by then I'd already spent my allowance. ;-)

I liked the first couple of Artemis Fowl books and my teenagers loved them. We all got a little bored with them as the series went on, though. Almost all libraries should have them (Free is good!)

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Do you trust Amazon's recommendations? I only buy m/f and m/m romance from them, so imagine my surprise when I got recs for embroidery books. I haven't bought, haven't browsed, haven't even considered in my mind embroidery. If it's something age-related, I'll sue them :-(

I have no idea how their recommendation system works. They seem to recommend the same authors to me all the time no matter what I buy. I've always wondered if publishers could pay Amazon to push their books as recommendations?

I think Siren Publishing does, because it's much more recommended than others, especially if you stumbled upon one of their books in your browsing history (I purged them from the other recommendation thingies, but they resurrect).

Charming (charming_euphemism) Josh wrote: "Has anyone read the Artemis Fowl series? Do you think I'd like that? "

We all adored them - the entire series. The library will have them (in kids or teens probably) and they are quick reads.

Artemis is a really cool character. At one point he (view spoiler) and you realize how much personality development there has been over the whole series. Excellent world building, too.

It could be, but I also think it is very slow to adapt. It didn't figure out to recommend M/M books to me for months after I started buying them.

mc | 1308 comments Josh, I just finished reading the first Artemis Fowl, and though I enjoyed it, I might suggest taking it out of the library first. (I know, it sounds like I'm damning it with that comment, but really, I'm not.)

Based on the first one, which was a quick read, and had some nice world-building, I don't know if I'd want to re-read it (eg, purchase it), though I'm interested enough to want to take the second one out of the library next.

Charming, am I just a grumpy person for saying that?

I'm not Charming, but I'd agree. The kids did reread as pre-teens but once was enough for me.

You know, I should know something about Artemis, seeing as I work with books and that age range, but there are just too many books YA and M/M that I can't keep up and read them all. As much as I'd love to. But yes, your library should have them for sure. Check out the first one, and if you really like it, then buy it. I find that's a great way to test books!

As for M/M I did buy Zero Hour in one of my last book buying binges just as it came out in print. I LOVE the cover, and I can't wait to read it. I didn't read the serialized version as I'd joined her newsletter too late, so we'll see what I think when I get to it. But right now, I'm doing my best to put it off for a later date. There are too many other books to read, and I want to save the best for last, I guess... though I know it won't be last. *sigh* Love JCP. Definitely haven't met one of her's that I didn't like, either.

Exactly! I've found that to be true too. In fact, these days that incorporates most YA books. lol, when I was a teen I thought I would never read anything else. And now I've found that I have indeed moved on. So I'm glad I don't have to buy the books, even if they are good. Most of them are not books I'd want to read again.

I started to read The Future Is Queer, and I have to say it's good. In fact it might get a 4 or 5 star review out of me in the end. btw, Neil Gaiman has a short story in it! (speaking of YA authors) It's a mix of gay and lesbian short fiction, but each story is different and interesting. There is some romance in it, but it's not really about the romance. I was surprised my library had it, which is great, lets me read it for free and then decide to buy it if I really want it.

Cheryl | 232 comments I've been meaning to read something by Ann Sommerville, so I might give Unnatural Selection a try someday when I've read all the books that I already own. That's the problem with onlline shopping, it's so easy to buy too much!

So as far as M/M goes, I'm currently reading Mind Fuck (duh, for the book group) but this weekend I'm taking a mini trip home and figured it would be good to bring a book that I've started but have yet to finish. You know those books where months go by and you're still in the middle of it?

My choice is As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann. It's a very well written historical fiction, but you have to dig for the romance, and it's just tough to slog through. However. I'm determined to finish the book one day. I don't remember what time period it's set in, but several hundred years ago at the least, and that's a time period when you just don't hear about gay relationships, which is part of the reason I'm determined to finish the book.

Let's just see if I can hold onto that choice until and after I start packing on Saturday night after work. lol. Mind Fuck will be coming with me too, but I need something else just incase I finish that one, you know? I'm such a slow reader, but I still like to be prepared cause one never knows what's going to happen, especially when spending an entire day on the train. If writing doesn't come easily, I'll need a backup plan!

One of these days I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and get the ebooks of Dangerous Ground 2, 3, and 4. It makes me want to cry because I don't have them yet and the first one was sooooo good.

Lauraadriana I'm so glad it made you feel all warm and fuzzy. I love it when stories do that to me! Kinda like The Dark Tide and In Sunshine or in Shadow.

Oh, and Mind Fuck (The Administration, #1) by Manna Francis is also on my list of books to read ASAP!

I really need a day or two to update my Goodreads. I still haven't commented on all the HSD stories yet (well, I did, but only in my notebook)

I have no restraint either. This is the second time I've broken my "no new books until you read the ones you have" rule for a Josh Lanyon book. Not that he's the only author I've broken the rule for, just the only one I've broken it for twice.

I don't know if you've seen this yet or not, but the first of the compilations is available for download. Don't Read in the Closet: GayRomLit Retreat 2011 Special Edition This is the one with all the authors who will be at the GayRomLit retreat. They're still working on the rest.
