I have a question: is there I am doing something wrong with tags and likes? I went trough the whole list of people, but only 3 liked me back. I am wandering if there a way to check who liked my book? Can you see if I liked your book? Am I doing something wrong and the likes don't show up on your books?

I am tagging everyone's books, votes following.

Thanks, Grant

I have met people who are energized by their own genuine enthusiasms here on Goodreads, as well as in other online communities. I have a deep sense of gratitude and thankfulness for the correspondence that has been established between us, and still continues. But in terms of Goodreads, a community now having reached ten million members if I have read correctly, there is an even larger confusion of purpose.
Being an indie author is not cute. Nor is it clever or respectable. It is not enough to think an idea followed through to a bound book makes one a serious writer. In reality, to be an indie author is to be prepared to wallow in not only the malaise and self-doubt that comes with authorship, but the general belief in your uselessness and irrelevance from the publishing world, which includes readers. Ever hear the phrase “If you can’t do, coach?” It’s unfair but no different. Ever hear “No one wanted to publish your work, so you published it yourself?”
I am an indie author, but I wish to rescind the label. And I know, above all and before anything else, I am looked down on because I put money and effort into producing my debut novel. Perhaps I’ve earned a modicum of respect for the financial and temporal sacrifice, which is in its own right a generosity of spirit from people as frustrated as myself, people who could easily have not offered that. And I knew this ahead of time. I knew it would be a gamble, of perception, reception and reward. But I did it because of my understanding of two things:
1. I believe in the relevance and importance of my novel.
2. With the evolution of the publishing industry, I recognized the level of difficulty in convincing an agent or editor to consider a debut novelist who can not guarantee a return on initial investment, as well as a marketing plan that is to be handled mostly by the author. Most good books...hell...most amazing books, spend their time in slush piles before seeing the light of day. I understand established writers and their contention when it comes to self-published authors perverting the system. (And it should not be a system. But because it’s become a system, a tacky machine of superfluous words, the indie authors’ negative reactions to being shoved off in to the margins as not being “true writers” are NOT valid. So prove yourself!)
But just don’t try to prove yourself by engaging in some factory of Likes, Tags and Reviews being exchanged for those who don’t even read your writing. Recently, I commented on a thread here in Goodreads about kindness, humility and gratitude. Someone responded, adding to the end of his/her comment that he/she wasn’t promoting his/her own work before doing it a few hours later in the same thread. And what has pushed me toward this conversation is that today, when corresponding with a show host for books and authors in Canada, the host told me he’d be interested in my book, but mostly he feels self-publishing is a hustle. A hustle. And he isn’t wrong, especially when I see something like what I saw last night on Goodreads: a “writer” was actually asking for help with plot lines for the book. And people were lining up to share their two cents.
Pathetic.
And so, we are not writers here. We are salespersons. And I see fully, now, what is wrong with self-publishing. I am proud of my book, inside and out, and pleased with the company I’ve paid to produce it with me. Not for me. But I am also completely satisfied with one person a month falling in love with my story, indefinitely, rather than one hundred thousand readers “liking” it temporarily just so I will follow their blog.
Wrong.

Good morning. The links you've posted above are not complete. If you haven't done this go to the actual amazon page and copy from the browser bar at top. Sometimes when you copy a link off another page it truncates the last part and won't go to a page. I do know though that I did like and tag you but think you may have been missing some tags on one of yours.
Good luck with this.

Glad to help. We're all doing what we can to get our books out there, which can be overwhelming but there are a lot of good people here and on other networking sites willing to help.

You're welcome. Will be looking forward to the corrected links. C.

I saw this note in another thread and responded from a pretty unhappy place. I now see it was posted in all of the like/tag threads. As an indie author myself, I think it's important to address several misconceptions and have added to my response to his letter to all self-published authors.
Damon,
Take a bit of advice from an indie author who does not spend her days or nights wallowing in "...malaise and self-doubt that comes with authorship, but the general belief in your uselessness and irrelevance from the publishing world, which includes readers."
Your use of the editorial "we" in your judgement of how others conduct their business is inappropriate and misguided, at best. You don't speak for indie authors, you speak for you. By all means, share your opinion, but your views and experiences do not mirror mine.
Is tagging appropriate? I don't know why not. It's part of the promotion that sells books, and that includes advertisement, blogging, interviews, social media postings, etc. People from all professions engage in self-promotion in order to move through the ranks of their chosen career field, including physicians, accountants, and authors who are published through traditional houses.
John Grisham has guest spots on the Today show-not because he is the news-du jour. He's there because he is promoting his latest book. Promotion does not make me less of a writer, it is part of what makes me a professional author. Publishing is an industry filled with hard working individuals, and the author is an integral part of the team necessary to put a book in front of the reader. When you indie publish, you may wear every single hat necessary to get the job done...but every part of the process still must be completed.
Contrary to your assumption, as an indie, I am not seeking representation by an agent or for a book contract. Writing and publishing my own books is how I make my living. I am proud to be an indie author and I enjoy my work. Want to know a secret? I hate promotion...but I still do it, because it's part of my job. I work for myself, and I have to be diligent about selling books because that's how I pay the bills.
I encourage you to speak to multi-published authors, traditionally published and indies and ask them about their promotion strategies. Learn as much as you can about the publishing industry and the profession. Please don't assume that an author's only role is to write the book and don't judge what others do to be successful, particularly in light of your own complaints that you feel others look down on you. There's enough of that-we need to be giving each other a hand up, not pushing each other down.
For everyone else in here? I'm working my way through your list, a few each day, because promoting our books is an important part of the job of 'author.'
Laura

Can someone help me with a related question? I have tried getting answers from both Amazon & KDP on how to get a "category path" for my book that I saw on a book with a similar genre - SEDUCTION AND SNACKS by the brilliant Tara Sivec! Even though I saw that her book was listed as lit fiction > women's fiction > single women at the bottom of her product page, KDP tells me there is no category path for that, which is what I wanted to have my book listed as! Maybe this is listed like this because of people tagging it? I can't seem to get an answer from KDP or Amazon, and am not sure how I should enter my two categories on KDP, since they don't match with Amazon's categories. Grrr...any help would be appreciated!
I had listed tags for my own book and would greatly appreciate if others could do so as well. I'll gladly return the favor & will scroll back in this list to do so. Thanks so much; glad to be part of this group!

I am in education as well (middle school teacher in Maine) and teach units on books by African American authors in every grade level: Bud, Not Buddy, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, To Be A Slave, A Dream of Freedom, and more. Best of luck with your new book - I enjoyed reading your bio.

I wish I could help you out on your question about category selection. I've also run into this same issue. It seems some authors are able to place their books into categories that are unavailable to the rest of us. It might be that the author plugged the book into that category before it was removed and Amazon has left it there. If you find any answers please post back here.
Thanks, and good luck!

Hi Tracy & Welcome!
I think, if I remember correctly, when you go through the process for Kdp or amazon through create space you list the category there and that goes into their data base. The tagging is used for searches and to identify your book for promotional and sales purposes.
Here are my links and I'm off to like and tag yours. Thanks.

In answer to your question about the path, it comes from the meta data you entered. Did you publish through kdp? If you did, you can go back into your account and update the information. You will want to make sure your ISBN data matches it too.
I hope that helps.
