Dorothy Miller | 9 comments This book is recent, the last 2-3 years, maybe. written from the perspective of a young girl who is living in the woods with a man she believes to beher father. They live in a hidden glen, or cave. He teaches her survival skills. They are discovered and have to run. They come upon a camp of other homeless people, the father says not to trust them. They live and work on a farm at one point. They share a shack in the snow with a woman, whom I believe burns it down, burning the father who then dies of his injuries. The girl may have memory of her mother and a sister. I believe it turns out the man was not her father, after all, but may have kidnapped her. My memory is erratic, I may be mixing two plots.

Wkd | 51 comments I believe this is "My Abandonment" by Peter Rock.

Here's the Goodreads synopsis:

A riveting and unsettling novel about a girl and her
father who live off the grid, in the shadows at the edge
of civilization
A thirteen-year-old girl and her father live in Forest Park,
the enormous nature preserve in Portland,Oregon.
They inhabit an elaborate cave shelter, wash in a nearby
creek, store perishables at the water's edge, use a makeshift
septic system, tend a garden, even keep a library of sorts.
Once a week, they go to the city to buy groceries, attend
church, and otherwise merge with the civilized world. But
one small mistake allows a backcountry jogger to discover
them, which derails their entire existence, ultimately provoking
a deeper flight.
In the tradition of Jon Krakauer's Into theWild and
Elizabeth Gilbert's Last American Man, Peter Rock's My
Abandonment, inspired by a true story and told through the
startlingly sincere voice of his young protagonist, Caroline,
is an eerie and mesmerizing book of survival and hope, and a
completely original novel of a remarkable and triumphant
transformation.

Dorothy Miller | 9 comments I'm sorry, I have been trying to figure out how to move this to the "solved" folder. Would anyone help me
do this?

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Dorothy, I'll move it for you.

In the future, there's an (edit) link just to the right of your topic title. If you click on it you'll get to a page with a drop down menu of all the shelves. Choose the correct solved shelf, ideally put "SOLVED!:" before your topic title, and click save.

Dorothy Miller | 9 comments Doh! Thanks, Lisa. I thought I looked everywhere. Didn't see that "edit".

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Oh, no problem, Dorothy. There are so many features at Goodreads, and there is often more than one way to do things, it's easy to forget how, even if you once knew. You might even forge this one again, and that would be okay. I'm happy to move the threads that need to be moved. But, when members who have found their books move them, that's very helpful.
