Christy | 37 comments I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it.
The main character's older sister is tried and convicted of witchcraft. The main character is also promised in marriage to the son of a (rich?) man because she is the only one who could understand the son (he has a speech impediment.) I know it takes place in Northern Europe and I'm pretty sure it's England, on the coast. The main character also saves the life of a poor boy who ends up becoming a devoted servant of sorts.

I think there is a shipwreck at some point, especially as the cover shows a picture of the main character dragging the body of a younger girl out of the ocean.

Thanks!

Carmen | 46 comments I loved this book too.

It has one of my favorite beginnings.

"When I was nine years old, I hid under a table and heard my sister kill a king."
