For this task you will need to read two medical or forensic thrillers/mysteries...one by a male author (EXAMPLE: No Certain Rest: A Novel) AND one by a female author (EXAMPLE: Harvest).

Are there any good male authors anyone would recommend? Anything that sounds interesting to me is written by a woman.

I'll bet Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell will fit this one. It's certainly medical and a memorable book.

For a male author, I really enjoyed the first Dexter book. Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. I read the second in the Dexter series as well, but it was not as good as the first, which was really great!

"Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe's radical approach to psychiatry? An approach that may include drug experimentation, hideous surgical trials, and lethal countermoves in the shadow war against Soviet brainwashing ..." - would this work as a medical thriller?

Medical thrillers/mysteries were what my mom used to read when she was a med student. I think we still have a stack of them at home somewhere, awful pulp fiction covers and all. This is not your "normal" forensics/medical mystery, but you might be able to read House Rules by Jodi Picoult. I'm reading it right now and it revolves heavily around forensics.

I liked Shutter Island a lot and it wasn't gory - maybe that's another option if it gets approved.

If it's approved, I recommend Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. I read it a few years ago and I'm a wimp when it comes to gory stuff - I didn't find this one to be too bad.

I think I've got mine - Outbreak by Robin Cook and if Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin is approved, I'll read The Serpent's Tale, the second book in the series. If not, I'll probably go with Death du Jour by Kathy Reichs.

This is a really cool task. I have never read a medical mystery book. I'm trying to read only books I own but I might have to make a stop at Barnes for this one.

I don't think Misery would work. Aside from some terrible ankle scenes and descriptions of pain there is no forensics and no detectives. BUT it is a super awesome book!

Oh ok thanks! I think I will try Shutter Island then if it is approved (since I already own it :).
