Pam Williams | 47 comments I am working on a summer reading list and am looking for recommendations. I work in a library at a middle school so I am looking for YA literature. So far I have Before I Fall and A Great and Terrible Beauty on my list. What will you be reading?

message 2: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Rhodes Linger!!! And the rest of the Percy Jackson books (I'm on the third) and hopefully the deathly hallows, the last Harry potter.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) 13 to Life: A Werewolf's Tale looks good and Mockingjay, the 3rd book in the Hunger Games series comes out this summer too. I second Linger, Shelby!

I've already read these, but would recommend The Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Knife of Never Letting Go, Unwind and Everlost.

I think they are all boy/girl friendly, especially the last three. My son is in middle school now and enjoyed them all.

bjneary | 236 comments Pam, what grades? Jordan Sonneblick's books are great, Gary D. Schmidt books, Gennifer Choldenko's Al Capone books are a riot! I don't want to give you High School YA titles....in our junior high they have to be careful about many kinds of subjects--so we get books that might be challenged....

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Good thinking BJ. I forget that schools aren't bookstores! With that in mind, I'll double my push for Neal Shusterman's books. Good, clean reads.

message 6: by Pam (new)

Pam Williams | 47 comments This is my personal summer reading list so I will include high school YA titles. My library is 6 - 8 so a lot of the things I read are too mature for my library. I tend to read a combination of titles at and above the maturity level of my students. I also have a son going into 7th grade so I am also looking for new books for him. He is finishing Catching Fire so we are looking forward to Mockingjay this summer.

message 7: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisaschroeder) | 6 comments Hi Pam,

I have a 7th grade son as well. Has your son read the other series by Suzanne Collins - Gregor the Overlander? My son is on the 5th one and he is a reluctant reader, and has really enjoyed all the series!! Also, the Percy Jackson series, and the Seekers series by Erin Hunter, about a group of bears. A stand alone he enjoyed is The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex.

Yay, we can't wait for Mockingjay either!!!!

A librarian had teachers ask their 8th grade students what books they loved and would remember from the year. I thought it was a great idea. And I was thrilled to see a couple of my books mentioned. :) Here's the link:

I love Sharon Draper, and I loved Out of My Mind. I think it's a fabulous book to give kids a different perspective on their peers with disabilities.

message 24: by Marg (new)

Marg (OmaV) I have just finished reading "The Crossing" by Mandy Hager, a New Zealand author. It is the first in a trilogy called "Blood of the Lamb" Girl orientated but a gripping read set in the Pacific after a cataclysmic occurrence from which few have survived and some of these have set up their own religioun and have enslaved the rest.

Nancy, I so agree about this book--it gives kids and adults alike that kids like Melody are thinking, feeling, and to be treated with respect and friendship.

message 31: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (dandandandaaan) | 3 comments i'm currently reading the morganville vampires series right now. and it just keeps getting better!!!! :)

message 32: by Anna (new)

Anna I just read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Rebecca Skloot). It isn't young adult, however, it would keep the interest of teens. It is non-fiction and touches cultural, historical, and scientific issues. I highly recommend it. It really should be read by everyone, but it would be a wonderful Black History Month or Women's History Month selection.

message 33: by Lexiiii (new)

Lexiiii Emond | 3 comments I've got to read my summer reading books for school, concluding of three boring books with reports.

But I'm looking forward to the 2nd Mercy Falls book and many others on my list, I want the fourth book to city of mortal instruments and my vampire academy series!!

message 36: by bjneary (new)

bjneary | 236 comments Just finished Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess---a great, compelling read about a girl's father who is a sexual predator, gets out of jail early....and is going after his daughter again....Loved the pacing, the determination of Meredith, a sick, but gripping book.

message 37: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 1 comments The Demon King By Cinda William Chima is really great and the sequel is coming out in September.

Of course I will be reading Mockingjay when it comes out.

I just finished The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan (the author of The Percy Jackson series) and it is based on Egyptian Mythology. It was really great!

I also read the third book in the series by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The First one is called Life as We Knew It. The second is The Dead and The Gone. And the last one is This World We Live In. All three of these are really great.

I just started a book called "Birthmarked" by Caragh M Obrien. Its very futuristic and a little bit science fictiony so far but has a very unique premise!

message 39: by bjneary (new)
