I've already read these, but would recommend The Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Knife of Never Letting Go, Unwind and Everlost.
I think they are all boy/girl friendly, especially the last three. My son is in middle school now and enjoyed them all.

I have a 7th grade son as well. Has your son read the other series by Suzanne Collins - Gregor the Overlander? My son is on the 5th one and he is a reluctant reader, and has really enjoyed all the series!! Also, the Percy Jackson series, and the Seekers series by Erin Hunter, about a group of bears. A stand alone he enjoyed is The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex.
Yay, we can't wait for Mockingjay either!!!!
A librarian had teachers ask their 8th grade students what books they loved and would remember from the year. I thought it was a great idea. And I was thrilled to see a couple of my books mentioned. :) Here's the link:

I just got an ARC of The Clockwork Angel at BEA...one of my students is reading it now. And Linger is fantastic! Can't WAIT for Mockingjay!

A fantastic series my students (7th grade) really love - boys and girls - is the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan. The first one is SO addicting!!

I love Sharon Draper, and I loved Out of My Mind. I think it's a fabulous book to give kids a different perspective on their peers with disabilities.

Definitely read the Hunger Games series. Sooo good!

It's fantastic! Absolutely loved it. I hope you enjoy it as well!

But I'm looking forward to the 2nd Mercy Falls book and many others on my list, I want the fourth book to city of mortal instruments and my vampire academy series!!

A Great and Terrible Beauty has a weird twist to it, but overall a great book, I read all three in a week !

The Hunger games was really goood ! I can't wait for the third one, LIES.

Of course I will be reading Mockingjay when it comes out.
I just finished The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan (the author of The Percy Jackson series) and it is based on Egyptian Mythology. It was really great!
I also read the third book in the series by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The First one is called Life as We Knew It. The second is The Dead and The Gone. And the last one is This World We Live In. All three of these are really great.
I just started a book called "Birthmarked" by Caragh M Obrien. Its very futuristic and a little bit science fictiony so far but has a very unique premise!

Man, that was a tough book to read! Didn't you want to grab and shake her mother?!

Both of those books are on my TBR list. I haven't gotten my hands on copies yet. I love the cover for Addicted to Her! Haunting eyes...
