Agatha Christie is going to be one of our upcoming featured authors. So we can have a good discussion then, on which is your favorite character (Marple or Poirot), which was your favorite book, where do you recommend someone to start, etc. I thought it would be good to every so often throw in a "classic" cozy mystery author. (First up under that category is Dorothy Sayers.)

Martha (marthas48) | 161 comments That's awesome!! I look forward to reading some of both. I'm still looking for my book by Sayers. I know I have one, but goodness knows where. I may have to end up getting one from the library! :-)

We recently put our house on the market and both the real estate agent and the stager he hired said "A lot of these books have got to go!"

We emptied two bookcases (and sold them), donated a couple hundred books to the local library, and moved a few boxes worth to our second home (where we hope to move ourselves after we sell the first one!).

The stager looked at the huge, teetering TBR pile by my bed and said "One book. One book is all that should be on nightstand." Aaargh! I have three now (so there!), and the rest of the TBR pile is in one of my dresser drawers that got emptied out when we moved our winter clothes to the second home.

I just hope someone buys the house soon, so we can move and go back to living in a home comfortably cluttered with books!

message 359: by KarenF (new)

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 29 comments Hi everyone - another newbie here! I live in Massachusetts with my dog and a smaller stack of books since I bought my Kindle. Well, a smaller physical stack anyway. I read a lot of romance, urban fantasy and mystery. I love that this group does a featured author instead of a single book since so many mysteries are in series. I also like the mix of "classic" and newer authors. My favorite "cozy" series is probably Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody. My virtual TBR pile is growing already and I'm looking forward to finding even more authors who are new to me.

We probably should move it. Good definition. The idea is that no one can leave that site and they all know one of them is the killer. That's why it works on a train or ship or a small island-- because the killer and rest can't leave. Fun stuff!

Also for Deborah, I would NOT recommend "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" as your first AC. It is unique, caused quite the sensation when it came out and no one but no one reveals the murderer. Leave it for at least #5 or 6. There isn't another one like it. That being said, I wonder how many of you will now go out and find it to read?!

message 361: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 22 comments And now I must read Hercule Poirot's The Mysterious Affair at Styles and work my way to The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Thanks Vicky! The only Agatha Christie book I have read is And Then There Were None.

I now have a new series to read and a book to look forward to when I get there!

I do love watching Marple on OPB when they do British murder mysteries. The British are great. Comedies, mysteries, Jane Austen, they all seem more real because they keep it down to earth.

Welcome, Karen! I understand very well the smaller physical stack (Cybook Opus here :D ), and I like all the genres you mention. I think that your virtual stak is going to grow a lot ]:>

message 363: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Welcome to Deborah and Karen! I keep giving away books but I keep buying new ones so I think I'll just continue to "break even." And then, my favorite authors (like Beth and Deb and JB and everyone else!) keep writing so I'm happy!

message 364: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) | 161 comments Welcome to all the new ones!! I'm fairly new, too. I think you'll love it here, I certainly do.
Caroline, my rule has been that I never take away as many as I donate or trade in, but lately I've not been sticking to it. Wish someone would pay me to read! Now there's a thought!!

Sue (suetinge) | 622 comments I'm Sue and I love cozies! Agatha Christie is probably my all-time favorite author. Lately I've been reading a lot of Joanne Fluke and Diane Mott Davidson.

message 368: by Sue (new)

Sue | 2 comments Hi,
My name is Sue. I've been a member of good reads for awhile but just found this group. I love reading all genres but lately it seems as if I'm always reading YA as I'm a sixth grade teacher. In an effort to read more "grown-up" novels, I've joined a book group and attended my first literacy festival in June. It was there I attended a session featuring three mystery writers. Since then I've been hooked! I'm hoping to be able to join in some group reads as discussing the books is almost as fun as reading them for me (and most of my friends get that "glazed" look when I try to discuss a book with them)!

Joan Lambert (jodar) | 3 comments Hi all! I am Joan Dahr Lambert, a new author of cozy English mysteries. The first, WALKING INTO MURDER, is available on kindle and will be out in paperback on Amazon in a week or two. The second, BABES IN THE BATHS, will soon follow. They take place in England, have some delightfully eccentic British characters, are light-hearted despite some serious subjects, and I think a fun read that moves fast and entertains. Now what I need to know is if YOU, the reader, agree. If you read my first effort, please let me know. I'm very open to suggestion, comments and advice.

Thanks and hope to hear from readers, jodar

Have just finished reading "The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox". Pretty flexible re:genres but always return to crime/psychological thrillers e.g. Minette Walters, Jonathon Kellerman, Barbara Vine

Tammy Welcome, all new members. I was on a family vacation last week (with no computer access) and came back to 75 new posts just on the "Introduce Yourself" thread. I don't have time to read all posts that I missed, but I have been scanning them.

I'm sort of "wearing out" on Joanne Fluke and Diane Mott Davidson but Agatha Christie is always good. Hope you enjoy all the discussions you can find on the cozy mysteries group!

Salena (salenamom23) | 19 comments I have been a member of goodreads and the cozy mysteries group for a while now. I just decided to do an intro.

My family and I live in North Mississippi. We are a homeschooling family of five. I enjoy crocheting, knitting and of course reading! My favorite books are cozy mysteries (especially knit and crochet mysteries) and spy thrillers.

message 391: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Welcome, Salena.

message 392: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Glad to have you with us, Salena! There are lots of crocheting/knitting/embroidery/needlework mysteries out there! I just read and thoroughly enjoyed The Quick and the Thread (Embroidery Mystery, #1) by Amanda Lee which is first in a new embroidery series (but the lady has other needlework stuff in her store). I loved it.

Hope you enjoy this group's discussions!

Welcome, Salena.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Hello everyone...

I've been a member for a few months now so I thought I should introduce myself.

I'm an expat living in Melbourne, Australia and I love to read (voted class bookworm in my graduating class) mostly cozies with some paranormal thrown in for variety. When I moved here from the US I sold almost everything, but the books and my two cats came with me! We are up to three cats now and 5 bookcases (who really needs a guest room, right?) and while there are no more cats on the horizon there is always room for more books. :)

I am so thrilled to have found this list, it's been a challenge to find new authors here in AU, so I've been thrilled with all the recommendations! I'm also dead jealous of all the bargains my fellow countrymen score back home as books here are stupidly expensive ($20 for most paperbacks). One of my best days here was the day I discovered the book depository and their free shipping.

It's so nice to connect with fellow cozy lovers!

Heidi | 2446 comments Hello Jennifer. Do they have libraries in AU?

Welcome, Jennifer!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Heidi I wrote: "Hello Jennifer. Do they have libraries in AU?"

Yes they do and I've used our local library to try out the Dresden Files series. But they just don't carry the range of cozies you can find back home. They have interlibrary loan too, but it costs over $5 per book. At that price I can have my own from book depository. :)

Australia is a wonderful place to live, but she isn't cheap! Lol
