Welcome Helen and Vicki! You'll find more recommendations than you can keep up with here, but will have fun trying. ;)

Hi Valerie,
Mysteries I got into that are both paranormal and cozy are those written by Victoria Laurie. The author ,like her character Abby,is a professional medium.
There was also another set of mysteries by an author whose last name began with "H" who had a group of FBI special unit detectives. Maybe someone else on this site will recognize this blurb and give you an author name. I believe the series was called the Bishop series. I thought it might be an easier transistion to mysteries if you could combine a favorite genre with a new one,so I listed these.
I love Sharyn McCrumb, although she is not a cozy writer per say,she does have two wonderful characters who have "the sight". Old Rattler and Nora Bonesteel are two of my favorite characters in fiction. For a charming Applachian tale Ghost Riders will introduce you to Old Rattler.

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 44 comments Hello
My name is Betsy and I'm 59 years old and have no idea how I got to be this old so soon.Like others on this site,I'm an across the map reader but tend to stick to mysteries, the most current fiction, and pop sociology.
I live in a small tourist town in WVa,Berkeley Springs-home to America's first spa and as advertisements say: Many people can say George Washington slept here, but we can say George Washington bathed here. In the mile long state park they have a stone crevice where supposedly George took his bath in the bubbling hot streams.

Vicki Thanks for the kind welcomes!
Yes, Helen I am on summer break. Looking forward to the extra time to read. Hope you enjoy your winter holiday! And welcome to the group also.

Welcome to Betsy and Valorie also.

The author is Kay Hooper. They are three trilogies which are related. Suspense with romance and paranormal elements, very good books (at least for me).

Martha (marthas48) | 161 comments Hello to everyone! Welcome to new members!! I'm pretty new to the group, too. Am just astounded at how behind I am on authors. This site is a wealth of ideas for new reading!! Thank you all!!
Betsy, I'm 62, but don't feel it - in my mind, at least. The joints tell a different story.

Miki | 148 comments Hello. I am a 63 year old retired teacher and school librarian. Now, I devote my time to taking care of my 2 year old granddaughter, creating collages, and reading cozies. My local librarian told me about this site, and so far I am finding wonderful new authors and series.

message 271: by Mary (new)

Mary Kennedy | 27 comments Hi Miki, I love school librarians (and teachers!). Hope this isn't too off-topic, but I was thrilled when the school librarian at the Middle School at Dover Air Force Base invited me to spend the whole day talking to the kids. I used to write teen novels and middle grade, (now I write The Talk Radio mysteries for Penguin). The kids were wonderful and so appreciative. Most of them had never met a "real live author" and treated me like a celeb! I made 500 chocolate chip cookies and gave out a dozen goodie bags with copies of my teen books along with a Webster's dictionary. A fun day!

Hi Kim! I'm in Cedar Park--guess that baby is about here!!! Congrats!

message 274: by Maria (new)

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) | 191 comments Well, I guess I should introduce myself...I'm pretty new to goodreads. I signed up a while back and then didn't really know what to do, so didn't. I didn't know there were groups to join.

My favorite cozy authors:

Elizabeth Peters--Love Amelia Peabody and Vicky Bliss!!!
Kaye C. Hill -- hardly anyone knows this one; she's with a small press in the UK. Writes wonderful little cozies with that English style. Lots of fun.

Let's see...I also love Virginia Lanier, although hers aren't really cozies. Little more real life than that, but just excellent reads.

Oh! Anne George--just love that southern humor and the little old ladies solving the crimes (and they really aren't *that* old either.) Fun!

Glad to be here and looking for books!

Maria

Mary Kennedy | 27 comments I love the way she keeps the action moving, yet still takes time to create characters we really care about. Tess Gerritsen does the same thing, I've always admired authors who can do that.

Caroline | 661 comments Welcome Cindy! I read several books at the same time too. But, like Melodie, I like the paranormal series as well. I just finished Glimpse of Evil by Victoria Laurie and am now reading Death by Diamonds (both cozies with paranormal). Welcome, Michelle! I think you'll find we're a pretty friendly bunch. : )

message 284: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin C (caitkom) | 199 comments I have been searching for a good book group for about the last year, and was so excited when a friend of mine posted something about goodreads on facebook. My mom read me mysteries when I was younger and my love of them has only grown! I love the paranormal mysteries including Charlaine Harris and Victoria Laurie. I just got married in March and my husband definitely does not understand my love of books and it is nice to find a group who does!!!

message 285: by Sandra J (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 308 comments I've been married 39 years, and my husband still doesn't get it when it comes to my books. That's okay, though. I don't get his obsession with fishing either.

I love PNR. I'll have to try some of the paranormal mysteries out there. I know I enjoy Amanda Quick's Arcane Society novels, and they always feature mysteries.

Martha (marthas48) | 161 comments Welcome to our new members!
Caitlin & Sandra - my husband does read some, but doesn't get why I have to have so many books around. They are comfort. I do get rid of most of my books after I've read them though. I should stop buying, but it's hard to do that.

message 287: by Melodie (last edited Jul 16, 2010 07:30AM) (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I've been married nearly 36 years and my husband doesn't get the book thing either. When we were dating and for the first 4 years we were married I didn't read much, other than magazines. I was a voracious reader until I got to high school and then I spent my time chasing guys and getting into trouble. Didn't pick reading back up again until we came to Colorado. He plays golf...a LOT, and I don't get that, so we're even, I guess!

message 288: by Sandra J (last edited Jul 16, 2010 07:33AM) (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 308 comments I don't get rid of too many of my books. I have a tendency to hang on to them for years. I have boxes under the bed and at least 7 bookcases full as well as a couple of good sized baskets full. And one of my favorite places to shop is a bookstore. I rarely leave empty handed. Why, yes, I do like books. Why do you ask? :-)

message 293: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) | 161 comments Caitlin, have you been to the Biltmore Estate in N. Carolina? It's worth the trip just to see the 2 story library!!! My dream room. My books had been boxed up while we were getting the living room painted and new carpet. I missed them so much ... was like old friends had returned to see them back on the bookcases!!

Martha: I truly understand. I have over 3000 sq ft in the house that I live in and literally have books almost everywhere. What aren't on shelves are in boxes several layers high. My house bid was finally accepted in Phoenix (AZ), we close on Monday. The house I am buying has not quite 1700 sq ft. As has been discussed in another thread my s.o. is a hoarder so between his problem and my book addiction trying to pack "lite" should be interesting.

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 308 comments It's amazing how many books can be stored in under the bed boxes. Now that my son is out of the house, I have his bed for under the bed storage, too, as well as the empty drawers in his dresser (well, those not taken up by yarn anyway).

Martha, that sounds amazing. I would love to see it! Since I was a little girl I have always wanted a two story book room!
