Hi Beth - just watched the trailer for the film http://www.ladayorkshirestory.com/#!t... and now I need to get the DVD [she says, wiping a tear]! Somehow I missed it until now - you are right, the scenery is typical beautiful Yorkshire Dales!

Just had to join this group to see all the books I've been missing! It's great to read about the series books - have just started reading Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy series and Her Royal Spyness. Plenty of reading to look forward to.

My name is Nicole and I am from tulip filled Holland. I've just started my first cozy mystery (Ellery Adams - A Killer Plot), but I noticed straight away these are my type of books. I already loved Agatha Christie, but Cozy Mystery just has that thing more for me.
Looking forward to read more and different writers.

a big hello from me, Nicole! I have never been to Holland, but All, I mean all, of my great-grandparents were either born in Holland or shortly after their parents came to the U.S. my heritage is 100% Dutch. not too long ago I read a poorly edited but otherwise fantastic true story of a Dutch housewife who with her husband hid men on their farm during WWII so they wouldn't be forced into the German army.... the book encompassed a lot more also, but it was amazing how much of my growing up a 3rd generation American, but with Dutch roots, could relate to culturally.

and, may I say, tactfully, 47 is not yet getting up there, R.J.!!! you are in your prime.

Thank you MaryJo for the welcome! Very cool that all of your great-grandparents have Dutch heritage!
It sounds like a good book! It is indeed amazing when you can relate to Dutch cultural when being a 3rd generation American, but I think it's fantastic! I hope you'll be able to visit Holland someday and see some more of your roots :)

I'm Kimberly and I've just recently gotten back into cozy mysteries again and I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone.

I'm Siddhartha, and I just realized my love for mystery. So I picked up The Cuckoo's Calling. Let's see if J.K. Rowling can write mystery, eh?

My name is Danielle and I am an avid reader and the associate editor for The Zharmae Publishing Press. We recently launched a Mystery Imprint called Porfirio Press and I wanted to 1, s..."
Hi Danielle, Interested here. Can you fix link, doesn't seem to be working-

When I saw this book club I wanted to join immediately, I love to read mysteries and can not wait to start reading the book club suggestions!

LOL"
a Good reason for some of us to avoid Hollywood. :]

My name is Nichole, and I'm an expat American living in Germany. I don't speak a word of German (nein!)..ok, just the one..so I spend quite a lot of time reading. I'm currently reading a few of Rita Mae Brown's books which I'd missed previously, as well as revisiting M.C.Beaton. I'd love to find a new series that captures my interest - preferably one that is available on Kindle, since shopping in my local bookstores is frustrating.
I look forward to reading with you all!

I've only recently learned about the genre of 'cozy mysteries'--I've read quite a few in the past such as Nancy Drew back in the day...Trixie Belden...but never knew it was a whole 'thing' lol. Diane Mott Davidson's books are the ones I can recall off the top of my head. I'm looking forward to reading more, with y'all's recommendations and tips :)

Hi Nicole - nice to meet you! I love Holland and tulips! Good luck on your writing! Nancy

I'm Juli, relatively new to GR (but loving it!) and basically joined because of Felicia Day and her VF Hangouts on youtube. I love those hangouts, even though the books they review aren't my main genre of interest.
Mostly I'm a Vonnegut/Clive Barker/Christopher Moore/Wendig kind of a girl, but I'll read almost anything! There are many genres I love, and I adore dog-and-cat-centric cozies. Susan Conant is my absolute favorite (I have all 19 of her dog lover's mysteries and her one cat-centric one, but I've not read it yet). I haven't read a lot of other types, but I very much enjoy Donna Ball's Raine Stockton series, Shannon Esposito's pet psychic, and C.A. Newsome's dog park mysteries. I loved Ellen O'Connell's Rottweiler Rescue and have been waiting for seemingly ever for the next in that series. I've only read maybe six of the "The Cat Who" books, but I enjoy those immensely.
I'm also a writer, but not of cozies (too complicated!) :)

hi Lynn. if you find the Perry Mason books to your liking, to me, Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe mysteries, very popular several decades ago, are even better. there are at least 2 dozen, and Rex Stout manages to keep up the quality of his characters and stories in almost every one.

I joined Goodreads yesterday and am already eager to start reading so many books I have discovered! I am currently reading Gerald Seymour after I heard his interview on BBC Radio Two. He is a very descriptive writer, I think I am going to enjoy his books but will update you all! My debut novel 'Doors Without Numbers; A Wallace Hammond Novel' has just been released. It is a psychological Crime Novel based in Kent, South East England. If you fancy a nose..feel free!

I'm in Colorado, getting ready to move to Florida as well! Can you breath down there? Every time I've been down south the air has seemed like soup, inciting panic at first. Also...how's the heat? And the bugs? :O
(I'm a little nervous.)

Diana, Timothy Hutton played Archie Goodwin in a made for television 2 season series of Nero Wolfe... they were pretty good! we have the dvd, you can get them on netflix, I think.

Juli - I lived my entire life in Southwest Florida until I moved here to AU. If you're moving in autumn you'll probably be in for a bit of a weather shock as I'm sure you know. :) Humidity will be fierce, but it does ease up a bit in Winter (still more humid than you'll be used to in CO, but not choking). Heat will feel worse b/c of the humidity, but you embrace your A/C and don't be afraid to run it. As far as bugs, can't think of any that are dangerous but plenty of them are ugly, lol. If you do ever open doors or windows, make sure the screens fit snugly.
I hope you enjoy your new home. :)

Thank you SO much for the tips, Jennifer :) My biggest fear is some mutant mob of Palmetto bugs carrying my cats off in the night. Well, that, and alligators!

Thanks for the tips, Missy! I am looking forward to saving money on lotion...which I guess I will then have to spend on drinking water ;) I will definitely friend you, thanks again!

Welcome to Goodreads, Pat. It sounds like we like some of the same authors, including Agatha Christie and M.C. Beaton.

Funny, I grew up in Casper, Wyoming and have been in Littleton/Aurora/Englewood/Parker for the last (mmmrphrm) years :)
Where in Wyoming are you? I still have family in Laramie, Casper, and Riverton.

Ugh! Palmetto Bugs! Satan's little minions... And yes, some of them are big enough you have to wonder if they could cart off the family cat - but they don't. The cats love to chase them. I hate them with every fibre of my being.
Alligators are, believe it or not, more afraid of you than you are of them. Just don't ever feed them, and if you see someone who is, stay away from that alligator. The few, very very rare attacks can usually be traced back to someone feeding the alligator that attacked, and the gator lost it's fear of humans. Oh, and not swimming in anything with fresh water might be a good rule of thumb. :)

Pamela and Carol, I'm a fan of Diane Mott Davidson, too--the person as well as of her books. As a fellow Colorado author, she very graciously shared some promotion tips with me before my first mystery novel was published. If you ever get a chance to go to one of her signings, do it! She hands out homemade cookies with the autographed books, and they are yummy.
Susan, I just finished previewing a movie for the Breckenridge Film Festival (I'm on the program committee) titled Lad: A Yorkshire Story that was set in the Dales. Gorgeous scenery, and an uplifting story!
