Beth | 616 comments Wow, lots of new group members since I last checked this thread! I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Sharon, Mary, Pamela, Le, Carol, Thiago, Kate, Deborah, Patricia, and Laura!

Pamela and Carol, I'm a fan of Diane Mott Davidson, too--the person as well as of her books. As a fellow Colorado author, she very graciously shared some promotion tips with me before my first mystery novel was published. If you ever get a chance to go to one of her signings, do it! She hands out homemade cookies with the autographed books, and they are yummy.

Susan, I just finished previewing a movie for the Breckenridge Film Festival (I'm on the program committee) titled Lad: A Yorkshire Story that was set in the Dales. Gorgeous scenery, and an uplifting story!

Hi Beth - just watched the trailer for the film http://www.ladayorkshirestory.com/#!t... and now I need to get the DVD [she says, wiping a tear]! Somehow I missed it until now - you are right, the scenery is typical beautiful Yorkshire Dales!

Just had to join this group to see all the books I've been missing! It's great to read about the series books - have just started reading Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy series and Her Royal Spyness. Plenty of reading to look forward to.

Nicole (nicolethecozybookworm) | 122 comments Hi Everyone,

My name is Nicole and I am from tulip filled Holland. I've just started my first cozy mystery (Ellery Adams - A Killer Plot), but I noticed straight away these are my type of books. I already loved Agatha Christie, but Cozy Mystery just has that thing more for me.
Looking forward to read more and different writers.

a big hello from me, Nicole! I have never been to Holland, but All, I mean all, of my great-grandparents were either born in Holland or shortly after their parents came to the U.S. my heritage is 100% Dutch. not too long ago I read a poorly edited but otherwise fantastic true story of a Dutch housewife who with her husband hid men on their farm during WWII so they wouldn't be forced into the German army.... the book encompassed a lot more also, but it was amazing how much of my growing up a 3rd generation American, but with Dutch roots, could relate to culturally.

Thank you MaryJo for the welcome! Very cool that all of your great-grandparents have Dutch heritage!
It sounds like a good book! It is indeed amazing when you can relate to Dutch cultural when being a 3rd generation American, but I think it's fantastic! I hope you'll be able to visit Holland someday and see some more of your roots :)

Linda Crowder | 12 comments Hello fellow mystery lovers! I grew up loving Agatha Christie and I still love mysteries that focus most on the puzzle and the people. I loved the early to mid Cat Who books and all three series by Rita Mae Brown. I also enjoy the Death on Demand books. Looking forward to hearing about other authors I can sample.

Jennifer (finegael) | 284 comments Hello there. My name is Jennifer, I live and work in CT, and I am a mystery-holic. I am new this month to Goodreads; a co-worker suggested it and I'm glad she did. Started out with Nancy Drew as did many of you folks. While I read lots of heavy mysteries, I like Daheim's Alpine series for a 'cozy' mystery.

Nichole (nicholioli) | 3 comments Hello everyone,
My name is Nichole, and I'm an expat American living in Germany. I don't speak a word of German (nein!)..ok, just the one..so I spend quite a lot of time reading. I'm currently reading a few of Rita Mae Brown's books which I'd missed previously, as well as revisiting M.C.Beaton. I'd love to find a new series that captures my interest - preferably one that is available on Kindle, since shopping in my local bookstores is frustrating.
I look forward to reading with you all!
N.

Dana (danabritt) Hi Y'all :)

I've only recently learned about the genre of 'cozy mysteries'--I've read quite a few in the past such as Nancy Drew back in the day...Trixie Belden...but never knew it was a whole 'thing' lol. Diane Mott Davidson's books are the ones I can recall off the top of my head. I'm looking forward to reading more, with y'all's recommendations and tips :)

message 2529: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Willis (lockjaw) Hello, I'm Lynn, I live in Kearns, Utah, and I'm a mystery junkie. My favorites are Lawrence Block & James Lee Burke. Barry Eisler's John Rain series is good too. I'm currently reading some Perry Mason books by Erle Stanley Gardner I just picked up. I love gritty, dark mysteries, but have read some of the Lillian Jackson Braun-type books as well. Always looking for suggestions on what to read next (as if my list wasn't long enough already!).

message 2530: by Bob (new)

Bob | 4 comments Hi, let me introduce myself. My name is Bob and I am an avid book lover. I guess I have more time than most because I am retired early on disability. Anyway, I do like cozy mysteries as much as the traditional thriller, blood and gore type. Cozies keep you just as focused on trying to figure out who did it without keeping you looking over your shoulder at ever slightest sound. Believe me, though, I won't give up either. Nor any of the other genres that I love to read.

message 2531: by Diana (new)

Diana Dunn (dianaxdunn) | 49 comments Hi everyone...I'm a READER and writer who writes thriller/mystery books, not so much cozies...but I love to read cozies...especially British ones. I was born and raised in the US, but was lucky enough to find an English husband and lived in the UK for eleven years. We are now back in the US (for a lot of reasons) and I've finally found GoodReads. I'm just starting to dip my toes into groups and I'm excited to be here....

message 2532: by Juli Pennock (new)

Juli Pennock | 27 comments Hi everyone (if anyone sees this, that is :) )

I'm Juli, relatively new to GR (but loving it!) and basically joined because of Felicia Day and her VF Hangouts on youtube. I love those hangouts, even though the books they review aren't my main genre of interest.

Mostly I'm a Vonnegut/Clive Barker/Christopher Moore/Wendig kind of a girl, but I'll read almost anything! There are many genres I love, and I adore dog-and-cat-centric cozies. Susan Conant is my absolute favorite (I have all 19 of her dog lover's mysteries and her one cat-centric one, but I've not read it yet). I haven't read a lot of other types, but I very much enjoy Donna Ball's Raine Stockton series, Shannon Esposito's pet psychic, and C.A. Newsome's dog park mysteries. I loved Ellen O'Connell's Rottweiler Rescue and have been waiting for seemingly ever for the next in that series. I've only read maybe six of the "The Cat Who" books, but I enjoy those immensely.

I'm also a writer, but not of cozies (too complicated!) :)

message 2533: by Gwen (new)

Gwen (gwencross) Hi everyone...my name is Gwen and I am an avid reader. I read almost anything, but cozies are my favorite. I'm looking forward to hearing about possible new authors to try and to hear others opinions about the books they are reading.

hi Lynn. if you find the Perry Mason books to your liking, to me, Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe mysteries, very popular several decades ago, are even better. there are at least 2 dozen, and Rex Stout manages to keep up the quality of his characters and stories in almost every one.

message 2536: by Diana (new)

Diana Dunn (dianaxdunn) | 49 comments Oh - I love Nero Wolfe - used to watch him on tv in the 80s - Lee Horsley was gorgeous - but read the books first and re-read them often - they are dated now, of course, but the core mysteries are still wonderful and the characters are fascinating - there are over 30 novels plus a bunch of short stories - I'm trying to collect them all...my sister haunts second hand bookstores for me....

Missy (twistedalice) | 4 comments Hello all. I'm a native Coloradan who just moved to Florida. Husband is active duty Air Force but we're settling permanently here in central Florida near Cocoa Beach. I love all types of books but my favorites are mysteries and horror. Mystery wise I like the classics like Christie and Doyle but I also loved the Agatha Raisin books by M C Beaton and just finished Cuckoo's Calling by Ms. Rowling. Huge Harry Potter and Hunger Games fan, love Stephen King and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Looking forward to seeing what you all are reading :0)

I joined Goodreads yesterday and am already eager to start reading so many books I have discovered! I am currently reading Gerald Seymour after I heard his interview on BBC Radio Two. He is a very descriptive writer, I think I am going to enjoy his books but will update you all! My debut novel 'Doors Without Numbers; A Wallace Hammond Novel' has just been released. It is a psychological Crime Novel based in Kent, South East England. If you fancy a nose..feel free!

message 2539: by Geri (new)

Geri Hoekz (flightsoffancy51) | 1 comments I'm Geri from Vancouver WA. So far my favorite mystery authors are Elizabeth Peters, Anne Perry (although maybe you couldn't call her books cozy), Edward Marston and a number of other writers of Medieval mysteries. Actually, I like almost any whodunit that showcases a specific period of history or regional setting.

I'm in Colorado, getting ready to move to Florida as well! Can you breath down there? Every time I've been down south the air has seemed like soup, inciting panic at first. Also...how's the heat? And the bugs? :O

Diana, Timothy Hutton played Archie Goodwin in a made for television 2 season series of Nero Wolfe... they were pretty good! we have the dvd, you can get them on netflix, I think.

message 2542: by Diana (new)

Diana Dunn (dianaxdunn) | 49 comments I didn't realize they did another series with Timothy Hutton, I was living in England in 2001 etc. The Lee Horsley series was in 1981 and I was an impressionable young girl in my early teens...I read the books and watched the shows and would just about have murdered someone if Lee Horsley would have come to investigate! I will definitely check NetFlix the next time I'm on the treadmill, that's about the only time I get a chance to watch it....

Juli - I lived my entire life in Southwest Florida until I moved here to AU. If you're moving in autumn you'll probably be in for a bit of a weather shock as I'm sure you know. :) Humidity will be fierce, but it does ease up a bit in Winter (still more humid than you'll be used to in CO, but not choking). Heat will feel worse b/c of the humidity, but you embrace your A/C and don't be afraid to run it. As far as bugs, can't think of any that are dangerous but plenty of them are ugly, lol. If you do ever open doors or windows, make sure the screens fit snugly.

I hope you enjoy your new home. :)

Missy (twistedalice) | 4 comments Juli- exactly what Jennifer said! The biggest tip I will tell you now is DRINK WATER!!! When you think you've drank enough, drink once more. This time of year induces swoobies (code for sweaty boobs). You sweat from everywhere from the moment you step outside to the moment you get back in the AC. I don't actually mind it too much, I was born and raised in CO and have had enough of the snow and dryness. I love not having to put lotion on Every. Single. Day. I know you're use to drinking water in CO since its so dry but you need it just as much here. It'll cool off soon though....at least that's what everyone has told me. Mid September...just think of it as trading off 5-6 months of cold weather for 2-3 of heat. Let me know if you have questions, just shoot me a message or friend me on here :0)

Pat | 35 comments Hi, my name is Pat Sherwood. I live in Edmonds, WA. I am 73 years old and love cozy mysteries. I don't like detailed murder scenes, nor heavy sex scenes, so cozies are just right for me. Also, as I have aged, I like to read a book quickly and get on to the next one. :) Love M.C. Beaton books, and of course, Agatha Christie. There many more authors I love as well. I especially love books that run in series so that Ifeel like I know the characters. Also, especially love the English cozies!Looking forward to discovering new authors. My list of favorite authors an the books I've read is about 20 pages worth!

Where in Wyoming are you? I still have family in Laramie, Casper, and Riverton.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Juli wrote: "Thank you SO much for the tips, Jennifer :) My biggest fear is some mutant mob of Palmetto bugs carrying my cats off in the night. Well, that, and alligators! ..."

Ugh! Palmetto Bugs! Satan's little minions... And yes, some of them are big enough you have to wonder if they could cart off the family cat - but they don't. The cats love to chase them. I hate them with every fibre of my being.

Alligators are, believe it or not, more afraid of you than you are of them. Just don't ever feed them, and if you see someone who is, stay away from that alligator. The few, very very rare attacks can usually be traced back to someone feeding the alligator that attacked, and the gator lost it's fear of humans. Oh, and not swimming in anything with fresh water might be a good rule of thumb. :)
