Bart Gilbertson Hello all...

I am new to Goodreads, and being a new author of a cozy mystery book, it just made sense that the first group I join would by Cozy Mysteries! I love the genre, love writing it and reading it.

I grew up reading primarily fantasy books. Major influences on me were Lloyd Alexander, Terry Brooks and Piers Anthony. And of course, the very first novel I ever read will always be a special one to me,and that was Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. So it's strange that I find myself writing cozy...LOL! But I love it.

Anyway, I am glad to be here. And remember, "the butler did it"...right? :o)

Olivia Hi there,

I'm Olivia, typically called Liv, from the most beautiful place on earth, Queenstown, New Zealand.

I love mysteries of all sorts and I had no idea that there was something called a "cozy mystery" when I had been reading them all along. I have only recently started exploring Goodreads and when I found this group I was thrilled. To be able to get suggestions and ideas and to be able to chat with like-minded cozy folk is just so great.

Looking forward to getting involved & reading & sharing everything all about cozies!

I have never had the priviledge of traveling to New Zealand, but love your attitude, Olivia! Your home does have a reputation for beauty, and it is wonderful to feel that way about where we reside.

Bart Gilbertson Thank you! Am happy to be here.

Hey, Wayne! Crais & Butcher are 2 of my favorites when I'm looking for non-cozies!

Eva Gerus | 86 comments Hello, I started reading cozy mysteries a couple of months ago, and I have been really hooked. I am living in Québec, and I am reading in English to improve my English skills. I live in Québec, the only French community in Canada. I love the following authors so far , Victoria Thompson, Lorna Barrett, Connie Archer and many more. I am always happy to discover a new series and I am reading 2 books per week. I mostly read when I am taking the metro to work or before going to sleep. My name is Eva and I love reading, writing and socializing.

message 2461: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been remiss in welcoming newcomers, so, I'll just say "Welcome everybody." Eva, I haven't read Connie Archer, but I just got two of Victoria Thompson's books. Did you know that Lorna Barrett writes under three names? As Loraine Bartlett she writes a craft mystery series. As L.L.Bartlett she writes a more psycholgical mystery series.

Jean Harrington (wwwjeanharringtoncom) | 105 comments A reply to Eva, especially. If you love mysteries, I have a series for you that are light-hearted fun--even with a dead body or two per book. The first, Designed for Death is available in e-book format, audio or print (the last via Carina Press. Highly recommended. Okay, I'll out myself: I'm the author, Jean Harrington from Naples, Florida where the series is set. Enjoy!

You might like Louise Penny's series which are set in Québec. The first one is Still Life.

Oh sorry, I should add that these aren't cozies but are low on violence, gore, bad language, etc.

message 2464: by Eva (new)

Eva Gerus | 86 comments Thanks for the welcome messages. Yes, I enjoy Louise Penny series, I am a real book mystery lover, and I read 2-3 books per week. I now read mostly cozy mysteries, I love the story set in little towns with a bunch of colorful characters.

Sharon Hello, I'm Sharon from Cincinnati, Oh. I'm a lover of many several genres and mysteries is one of them. I love reading a goodmystery/suspense novel , but every once in a while I love a soft mystery with humor without all the overly explicit bells and whistles.

Mary Welk | 2 comments Hello! I'm Mary from Chicago. I enjoy amateur sleuth novels in the traditional, or cozy, manner. I recently posted reviews of cozy mysteries I've enjoyed, most of them firsts in a series, here on Goodreads. I'm currently reading A BODY IN THE BACKYARD by Elizabeth Spann Craig, which I think is the third in the Myrtle Clover series. It's a fun read and I'm enjoying it. Good to meet you all here.

Pamela Rose (httpbitly1ax8ln0) | 20 comments Hello, I'm Pamela and I'm fairly new to Goodreads. However, I am, probably like most of you, a lifelong reader in general, and mystery books in particular. Mystery cozies are some of my very favorite. I like the familiarity of the genre--the chance to get to know the characters in depth. Usually these are people you'd like to invite to dinner!

Some of my favorite authors are Cleo Coyle, Diane Mott Davidson, Joanne Fluke, M.C. Beaton and Laura Childs. There are many, many more, but I'll stop at mentioning those for now.

I'm happy to join this group.

Hello everyone,

I just joined good reads and was excited to find this group. I love cozies. I don't have a favorite per se, whatever catches my eye. I have read the tea shop series set in South Carolina, and quite a few set in Great Britain. I also enjoy ones about magic or witchcraft, but also ones with cats or animals. It really depends on what catches my eye. I did read a fun one where the sheep solve the mystery of the shepherd who got killed, as it was different. I look forward to reading new authors too.

Pamela Rose (httpbitly1ax8ln0) | 20 comments You're kidding...the sheep solve the mystery! How cool is that. I, too, like mysteries with magic and bits of witchcraft. As for cats...well, I'm a lifelong cat lover too, a fact of which my cat, Jake, takes full advantage.

Deborah (deborahjt) | 9 comments Hi,..just found Good Reads, and sorting it out...this is the first group I am attempting to join. LOVE cozy mysteries. I am also a member of PaperBack Swap, if any of you know the site. I have read all of M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin series, as well as her Hamish McBeth series. Finished the Desiree Shapiro series by Selma Eichler, they were a favorite. Have jumped around with many others, but as we all know some are better than others.

I live in Central NY state, reading is a favorite hobby along with my Harley and my grandsons. Looking forward to finding other authors I can enjoy.

My book Mocha, Moonlight, and Murder is romantic suspense, I actually prefer to describe it as a romantic mystery. You can read a portion here on goodreads, if you just search the title or my name. From the description of your favorite book, I think you'll like mine too.

Thanks.

Patricia Costa Viglucci (patcostaviglucci) | 4 comments Hi, I was born in Austin,Pa in Potter County, just a couple of miles from where Margaret Sutton(Rachel Beebe) lived and where her first Judy Bolton mystery was set, using the dam break of 1911 which took 78 lives. With a newspaper background(I'm interested in everything) I can't seem to confine myself to one genre, but thus far I have only one mystery--and it's set in the U.K. I realized that all my books start with setting. After a visit to relatives in Hyde where England's mass murderer Dr. Harold Shipman killed 300 plus patients and peering into the half-shuttered windows of his surgery, and getting chills,I was hooked. "Beware the Ghost Riders!" also takes advantage of the fact that every spring farmers in Cheshire and Derbyshire are still uncovering coins from the Roman occupation of two hundred years before. The protagonist is Justin, a teen, (Judy Bolton's counterpart?) but his sidekick is his hunky uncle Alex, a history professor, from Rochester, NY, where I now live. The book is free today through Aug. 5 for downloading. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050YLI48

I'm Laura from sunny and, currently, HOT Florida.
I love reading all kinds of books- but I LOVE mysteries! I'm still a little confused about what's a true cozy, as I've heard so many different opinions. But as long as the story captures my attention- I'm in!
I'm also a writer- but you can be a writer if you're not a reader first.
Looking forward to finding new authors and series!

I'd also love to do a buddy read with someone!

Wouldn't it be great if there was a scientific definition of cosy (sorry, cozy). In the UK it is still seen as not really very interesting or exciting but when I say that Agatha Christie is considered cosy crime, everyone agrees it is their favourite!

message 2492: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Costa Viglucci (patcostaviglucci) | 4 comments Hi, Susan: if you put "cozy mystery" in your browser, some definitions will come up including one from Wikipedia. Usually the detective is an amateur sleuth, often a woman (Judy Bolton), working in a small community atmosphere on a crime in which sex and violence are not elements and with little police presence. In "Beware the Ghost Riders!" set in U.K., American Teen sleuth Justin McKean is searching for a missing cousin and fears that "Dr. Death," based on a real life physician in Hyde, may have played a part in her disappearance. Justin, however, has an active imagination and can't trust his "vibes." I hope others will weigh in on the definition of "cozy mystery."

I think my books must qualify then - archaeologist sleuth in Yorkshire Dales, no sex and little violence, some police presence though.

Hi, Susan: Eager to check out your books. Loved Agatha and progressed to P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. Am captivated by the English countryside and absolutely loved Derbyshire and the Peak District--this after I was sure that England couldn't compare to Italy where we've traveled many times. One highlight was an express train trip from Manchester to London.

message 2498: by Susan (new)

Susan Parry | 32 comments The Yorkshire Dales are lovely at present - we have sunshine and the heather is just coming in to its intense purple. All my locations are actual places in the Dales, including the pubs and tea shops! I aspire to write as well as P D James but she has so many years experience - just re-reading her. I know she is a little critical of Agatha Christie but she does just occasionally follow the same formula, which after all was very successful.

message 2499: by Susan (new)

Susan Parry | 32 comments As mentioned above, I've just finished reading 'Death of an expert witness' by P D James. It definitely has the format of an Agatha Christie - large institution of a number of people all connected and with a motive to murder the victim. The twists and turns have to be compared to AC and I was sure I knew 'who done it' on page 36 but that was the biggest herring of all!

message 2500: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Costa Viglucci (patcostaviglucci) | 4 comments My sister just brought me P.D. James "Lighthouse," which I've read, but am ready to read again. Interesting what you say about P.D. using Agatha's format. Would love to visit the Dales. Not an option right now, but will read your books instead. Am big on settings. Which of yours should I give a try first?
