Ruby Chua (rubychua) | 13 comments Hi all, I might have introduced myself in this thread previously but I went 'coma' for a while due to time constraint. So I would like to introduce myself once again. :)

My name is Ruby and is from Singapore. Honestly, I have never known what is the definition of cozy mystery but looking through the cozy mystery books that you guys have read in this group, I am especially excited about reading the Cupcake Bakery mystery, tea shop mystery and mrs murphy series :)

I typically read all type of genres except for sci fiction.

Hi, my name is Cathy Ace and, when I found this group, I couldn't resist joining. I live in Vancouver, BC, but am originally from Swansea, South Wales. Yes, I'm an author of "cozies", but I won't shove that down anyone's throat...if you see what I mean - YIKES, must remember this is for readers who, like me, love a murder mystery! I have grown up, like so many folks, reading and loving Agatha Christie, as well as Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys etc, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L Sayers, Conan Doyle...I could just list a lot of names, but we all know that what I am really saying is that I am addicted to crime puzzles, preferably with the odd corpse or two thrown in for good measure. I'm looking forward to mixing with a group of people who are obviously blessed with the same good sense that I find myself enjoying!

The oldies are often the goodies...and now, as a writer, I find it's interesting to read the books that are "where it all began"

K.T. Pinto (ktpinto) | 4 comments Hi there! My name is KT Pinto, and I am a huge mystery fan! I like cozy mysteries, but they have to have some sort of unique twist to them or they start to get redundant (for example, Diane Mott Davidson's Goldy Bear series was my first catering mystery series, and I really can't get into the others) Luckily, there are so many diffierent mystery worlds out there, it's easy to find something new!

I am a writer, but I only have one mystery story published. My books and other stories lean more towards alternate history and urban fantasy. Reading mysteries is my fun escape!

I look forward to chatting with people here!

message 2143: by Louise (new)

Louise | 8 comments Hi -- I'm hoping those of you who read lots of mysteries can help me. I'm looking for more mysteries like those written by Elizabeth Peters (Amelia Peabody), Deanna Rayburn (Lady Julia Grey) and Jacqueline Winspear (Maisie Dobbs).
I looked thru some of the posts a few days ago and made a list of authors to check out over the holidays, but was disappointed with both the Elizabeth MacLeod (The Balloon Man) and the Joanne Fluke (The Cinnamon Roll Mystery). I just started Laura Childs, The Teaberry Strangler, which seems a little more intelligent and complex.
Suggestions, anyone??
Thanks so much,
Louise Mann

They're not period mysteries like the ones you mention, but I find Susan Wittig Albert's China Bayles books and Earlene Fowler's Benni Harper books to be very good.

message 2145: by Leslie (new)

Leslie @Louise -- there are lots of "historical" mysteries! I really like Kate Ross's books (the first one is Cut to the Quick); also good are Ariana Franklin's Mistress of the Art of Death and Alan Gordon's series about fools (first one is Thirteenth Night). Ellis Peters Brother Caedfal books are good too!

message 2146: by Louise (new)

Louise | 8 comments Thanks so much for your suggestions! I'll definitely look into them.

message 2147: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 1 comments Greetings from Chicago! I am a retired librarian who fell in love with mysteries during Nancy Drew days. Since I abhor violence, the cozy genre is ideal! I tend toward British authors, and have read every Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth by M. C. Beaton; the element of humo(u)r is a real plus! In the past, I have enjoyed Isaac Asimov's "Black Widowers" series and anything by Charlotte MacLeod. The 4-volume Sue Henry series was delightful. Since I love the Southwest, I have read some Tony Hillerman, but have trouble with the violence. This weekend, I read two books by J. A. Jance, but will not read more due to the disturbing plots. I'm not into police procedurals. I look for books that have a strong regional flavor and an emphasis on relationships. The Booktown series comes close, but lacks a certain "je ne sais quoi."

message 2148: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 857 comments greetings, Cindy,
have you tried Victoria Thompson's gaslight mysteries, with mid-wife heroine Sarah Brandt and her detective friend, Frank Malloy? they take place in New York City about the turn of the century.
for fairly light fare there is also Lilian Jackson Braun and "the cat who...." series.

message 2149: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Hi all, just joined the group, Happy New Year! Cozy mysteries are my favorites but I read a lot of different types of mystery/suspense novels, popular fiction, some non-fiction, and historical fiction.
