Yes, but when you're on a plane, you might have to carry more than one book. AND you can't instantly download. BUT you can read during takeoff and landing. I better take both. Best of both worlds!

Janet (cedargma) Hi, my name is Janet and I am a reader of all genres but my favorites are Historical Fiction and of course Cozy Mysteries. I have been on Goodreads since 2009 but this is my first time in a group.

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 17 comments Hi, I just joined Goodreads this week. I'm one of those book addicts, turns out I've purchased and read 62 books since January 1st. That bunch was mostly urban fantasy which I make short work of. It did include Dean Koontz, Sue Grafton's U and Charlaine's Aurora Teagarden and Shakespeare mystery series. Unlike her vampire series, these mysteries are rated PG. Joined as I'm always looking for new books to add to my to read. I keep a blog that covers my interests: crafts, recipes, my town and books. I'll write about books once a week. http://ceodraiocht.wordpress.com/2011...

I love the Shakespeare mysteries and some of the Sookie ones were pretty good. Aurora was a little slow for me, but I only tried one. Decent read.

Nickolas Drake (Nickolasdrake) | 19 comments I'm still trying to figure out if I want to buy an eReader, or an iPad; you can read any type of file with the iPad and don't have to worry about compatibility.

My two books, so far, A Murder in the Grand Canyon, and The Loggia Crystal are both on Amazon in Kindle format, but I downloaded the app for my smartphone and one for the laptop to be able to check them out. Any thoughts on the type of device?

I bought a netbook. It's the same size as Kindle only folded. The keyboard is not full-sized. There's no monthly connect (we use our regular internet service and it has wi-fi.) Works great. I use Kindle for PC and also Nook for PC so I can buy from either store. I've also downloaded the Sony for PC, but that was a bit more cumbersome and I haven't read any actual books on it.

message 764: by Nickolas (new)

Nickolas Drake (Nickolasdrake) | 19 comments Interesting. I hadn't even thought about a netbook; I use a 13" laptop with a 32" LCD TV as a monitor (eyes are getting old!) My sister just bought a Kindle and went on a cruise and loved it. She also has a netbook; I'll have to ask her why she didn't use that instead, but knowing her, she always travels with a LOT of stuff!

The netbook on a cruise isn't as useful as other places--no wi-fi except when you're in port and the cruise ship charges a HUGE amount of money (something like 30 bucks an hour) for connect time. Either one would work for a cruise--preloaded with books. Since the netbook wouldn't be very useful for email or other things on a cruise, I'd take a Kindle over the netbook in that particular case!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I have an iPad, though I didn't buy it for reading books specifically. I love having it and I'm loading it up with some ebooks for a trip we're leaving for next week, so I can read on the plane and as we travel without having to weigh my bags down with books. (Though I'm bringing a printed book with me for landings and takeoffs). I have my kindle app on it and I have a few books from the apple ibooks as well. I find it easy to read from and I don't have any issues with eyestrain.

Beth | 616 comments A big welcome to Brenda, Nick, Janet, and Maggie!

You'll find lots of great cozy mystery reading suggestions here. Maggie, I'm in awe of your reading prowess. I'm lucky if I can read one book a week, with writing and promotion taking up so much of my time. Janet, there are a lot of good historical mysteries, so you can combine your two reading interests nicely.

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 17 comments I'm using the free kindle app on my HP laptop 'entertainment notebook'. When a friend walked me through her ipad - all the features worked the same as on my notebook (and some ipads are almost as big). She loved her handy leather stand - I cuddle back, place a pillow on my lap and the laptop (large screen and you can set type any size you like)holds itself up same as the stand. Every feature works well and the same. True my laptop is just a bit bigger, but I generally travel with it for other reasons. I also always have a few paperbacks for "about town" waiting (dentist or whatever) and extended power outages.

message 769: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 17 comments Since I also do Urban Fantasy, I know what you mean. Transitioning from a fast action packed story to something a bit different can seem slow. I've got one book I put aside that I may try to go back to - it's more lyrical fantasy and I felt like I was dragging my feet to get through it (even found Koontz Taken a tad slow but his fantastic use of language and prose made up for it).

That's pretty much me--I have a laptop and the netbook. There are definitely places where a Kindle (or other reader) would be preferable, but all-in-all the netbook works great for those situations. I do read at home on the Kindle for PC on my laptop. There's such great bargains out there and I love the instant book.

Do you use www.DailyCheapReads.com ? If not, check it out. It's a great site for bargains. They've announced a fun little "March Madness" poll that I'm looking forward too as well (it's really just picking favorite books from a pile or "guessing" which ones would be best.) I used to do a March Madness thing on another site and had to try and READ them all, but this sounds like more fun!!!

Who are your favorite UF? (There's probably a better thread to ask this...but I'm lazy...pls forgive.) I love UF. Ilona Andrews, John Levitt, Early Sookie Stackhouse (and the Lily Bard series for mystery by Harris too).

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 17 comments For Urban Fanatasy I love CE Murphy, Kelly Armstrong, Kim Harrison and the Sookie Stackhouse series. I put the first book of the series of my favs on my Favorites Bookshelf on my page here at Goodreads. I really prefer urban fantasy that is not paranormal romance or even, as I'd call the Anita Blake series, erotica going from one sex scene to the next. In her first four books, no one humps anyone else, but it drastically changes after that). I also enjoyed the Lily Bard mysteries.Amazon's always giving me Ilona as a rec (always feared she may be more the romance style)- I've never tried John Levitt - will look him up.

message 775: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 17 comments Should add I have Simon Green bookmarked as the next series to try out (haven't yet).

message 776: by Maria (new)

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) | 191 comments Maggie wrote: "Should add I have Simon Green bookmarked as the next series to try out (haven't yet)." Simon Green is okay, although not one of my favorites. I'll read him more a library than a buy.

Ilona Andrews is not any romance...the first couple. There's some romantic tension in a few spots through each and in book 3. I'm saving the rest. I want to wait until the writer team (husband and wife) have more out, although I already own the ones that are out. Yes, I'm a hoarding type!

John Levitt is much more focused on mystery than any romance, although his poor, sometimes a little ... geeky? character does kind of try for a girlfriend a couple of times. (He kinda stinks at it.)

I don't think there's any romance in Simon Green (not the ones I've read.) You might like Dresden Files too, although I think the "logic" in some of the character choices ... well, it doesn't work for me. I'm told the logic flaws get better, but I've only tried the first two. No romance in the ones I tried and I haven't heard of any in the whole series.

Yeah, I read Anita and LOVED the first 3 or 4. And then and then. Don't read anything by her anymore.

M

Amen to that. I had to give up on Laurell K. Hamilton. I like an actual STORY, not just pages of erotica. Plus, personally, I find reading about someone's sex life, graphically, to be faintly ridiculous. :)

message 778: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 17 comments I've read the first Dresden and will continue them. As you note they're not bad, not my absolute favs. The favorites I mention here do have folks lusting after one another, the books just generally (maybe one in every so many of the series, and once in that book)don't detail every single physical manipulation of engagement. I'd hit my limit within the Anita Blake series (which I simply stopped reading) and after I finish Monings Fever series today, I'll be off any romance-oriented ones for a stretch. Will add Ilona to my to do list. Thanks!

For UF some of my favorites are the Sookie books, Jeaniene Frost, Thomas Sniegoski and Jim Butcher. LOVE Harry Dresden. I read 3 of John Levitt's Dog Days books and wasn't crazy about any of them, tho I do love Louie! I have a dog named Louie which is why I picked up the first one of those books! I read a bunch of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan books and never really liked any of them either. I think it was a habit to just keep reading them, and finally stopped. I loved Jenks & Ivy, tho and wish she'd do a spinoff for either of them. Simon R. Green's Nightside books are fun reads, tho the last 2 haven't seemed to be up to earlier standards.

Maybe Linda Fairstein, Carrol O'Connell or Robert Crais (three of my favorites!) -- They are thrillers/detectives rather than cozies.

Went on to Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and then discovered Agatha Christie, no turning back after that! I am currently reading Every Crooked Nanny by Kathy Hogan Trocheck.
