Love varying my reads..30 minutes in modern day literary thriller world..and 30 minutes in Victorian England..and back again!

C.nick (cnick) | 26 comments How are you finding Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf? I’ve read many translations but that’s the one I always go back to. It was so sad to hear of his passing.

message 1105: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (scpennington) | 8 comments Only one book at a time for me, thanks! As an author, I know the sweat, blood, tears and infinite hours that go into crafting a story. I like to give an author's "baby" my full attention - then I write a review.

Thank goodness I'm a fast reader...

Currently reading three!!
The Long Goodbye (Philip Marlowe, #6) by Raymond Chandler Three Clerks by Anthony Trollope The Medusa Amulet by Robert Masello

S.S. David (seyisandradavid) | 5 comments No! I read three books at once! Crazy isn't it!! I multi task a lot, and I still get the juice from the books. I also sneak to the back to know what happens at the end, then I'll finish it up!

message 1111: by Kerra (new)

Kerra | 41 comments Well usually I read 10 a the same time, alternating every few chapters from book. I make sure every book is different in genre because its easy to get 2 vampire based books confused, dragon books, ect. Here lately I haven't been doing so good with rotating lol, but it keeps things interesting, an I know a book is a REALLY good book for me cuz I find myself wanting to read that one more. My main goal at this was originally to read more a year.

message 1112: by Malina (new)

Malina I usually have two going at the same time but always different genres

Wow! I admire you for being able to read so many at once! I'm lose a few threads for sure.

message 1114: by Iscah (new)

Iscah Iscah | 20 comments I usually read one at a time, but occasionally, I'll have two or three going. This is generally a fiction/nonfiction or hardback/paperback. I prefer fiction for night time reading, and hardbacks can get heavy to carry around with you. I sort of have two going right now, but one's a fairytale collection, so I'm mid-collection, but not mid-story.

message 1115: by Shell (new)

Shell (shellcampbell) I prefer to read one at a time, but often I'll have two or three, possibly four on the go. I can't seem to help myself.

Rick-Founder JM CM BOOK CLUB | 7280 comments Mod
I have found myself, recently, reading just two books at a time. A current novel and a Victorian one. I usually like to read a non-fiction or two as well..yet time constraints do not allow it..yet!

message 1117: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Carpinello (cherylcarpinello) | 3 comments Thanks to being an English major in college and juggling 4 or 5 lit classes at a time, I'm usually reading several books at a time.

message 1118: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeldiack) | 5 comments I prefer to read one at a time, but if a book is too slow and I don't enjoy it I'll happily abandon it to start another. although abandoning books doesn't happen too often, except in the recent case of A Dance with Dragons!

message 1119: by Val (new)

Val (valz) | 31 comments I always have more than one going at a time. One will catch me, though, and I'll finish it and then get to the others. There are just too many books that come available at the library all at once.

message 1120: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Gligor (goodreadscompatriciagligor) | 17 comments I'm definitely a one book at a time reader. My reading time, for the most part, is just before I go to sleep at night. When I'm "into" a good book, preferably mystery/suspense, I immerse myself in it and I don't want to read anything else until I've finished the last page.

message 1121: by Peter (new)

Peter Glassman (pglassma) | 17 comments I read a book a week and like Patricia I read before sleep overcomes me. If the book puts me to sleep quickly then it's time for another selection and a different author.

message 1122: by Mark (new)

Mark Mortensen Several years ago I began reading several books at a time, a pattern which I had not participated in since my college days. In a way it makes me feel young again.

My reading has slowed a bit..with an 8 week old puppy in the house now..quiet time is a bit more rare!

message 1124: by Darren (new)

Darren Hayes | 28 comments Right now, most of my books have to do with seminary. I have two fictional books that I am attempting to read right now. One is called lies that I read to my other half. The other one is called the hobbit

Rick wrote: "My reading has slowed a bit..with an 8 week old puppy in the house now..quiet time is a bit more rare!"

Ha ha. I know what u mean. When I got my first puppy (a boxer), she ate the couch cushions, peed everywhere, chewed up the wood furnture, stole any food she could reach, ate shoes, etc. And some of those habits she never outgrew :) But I loved her. How's Mason doing?

message 1126: by KOMET (new)

KOMET | 868 comments I'm ever a voracious reader. :) By my reckoning, I'm now reading from (at various times) half a dozen books: fiction and non-fiction. My apartment is my sanctuary.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom A Triumph (The Authorized Doubleday/Doran Edition) by T.E. Lawrence

message 1127: by Emily (new)

Emily Hill | 44 comments Yep! I am a 'one-book-at-a-time' reader. when I read (mostly novels) I enter fully into the world the author is creating -- how many realities can one grandmother of six little ones handle? Really??

And, unlike Rick, I wouldn't DREAM of adding a puppy to the mix! Oh. My. Gosh! I'm already awake with my OWN insomnia (it's 2AM in Seattle) why would I add the insomnia of a puppy?? ;-) One book. No puppies! Truth Like the Sun by Jim Lynch

haha!! Well..he does sleep for about an hour..ever three hours.so I get about 2 hours a day for sleeping, eating and reading ect ect ect!!!

WTF Are You Reading? | 4 comments I have anywhere from 5 to 8 books going at any given time. As a book reviewer, there are always tons of books to read at any given time.
Most of my treasures are in ebook, but I also have audio and print titles on deck.
I usually manage to make it through 2 books a day.

message 1130: by Peggy (new)

Peggy Rothschild | 54 comments I'll have a nonfiction book going at the same time as a novel, but I generally don't read more than one novel at a time. Doing so seems to dilute my enjoyment of the 'world' created by an author.

I have an odd dilemma. As I posted previously ... I have embarked on a LONG term reading of Les Miserables by Victor Hugo .. I also read a current book as well and love to read a historical novel too. Les Miz is so engrossing I find it hard to read anything but current thrillers alongside it. Yet as I plan on taking the next 11 months to complete Les Miserables by Victor Hugo ... I feel a bit hogtied!!

message 1136: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (goodreadscomptroyerauthor) | 4 comments Good going, Rick. I suspect you'll find that at some point each book adds to or dovetails with the others. Fascinating watching your mind work at that level. My personal definition of hell is being stuck with nothing interesting to read - you're a long, long way from hell. Ain't it grand? Best, Patricia

message 1137: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) I usually have two going at a time, one at home, one in the car for lunch time reading.
At one point this year, I was trying to read five at once, but that didn't work out too well. I finished three, abandoned the other two.

message 1138: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (goodreadscomptroyerauthor) | 4 comments Good plan. I usually have at least one non-fiction and one fiction going through what passes for my mind at any given time. There is so much information and so very many good writers out there. I don't however any longer think I have to finish a book I'm not enjoying. Too many other books I'll probably never get to.

message 1139: by John (new)

John Dizon | 11 comments I keep as many as seven books on my nightstand ranging from numerous different subjects. If and when a book becomes boring I'll switch it off with the next one. Obviously some books get read quicker than others. The challenge is to both see if there is some sort of commonality between subject matter, as well as not allowing the books to blur into one another. Lumosity people would find it interesting.

Lately I have been reading just one book at a time. Very busy. I would like to move back up to 2-3 at a time. Perhaps in time!

message 1142: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Clausen Mostly a one-at-a-time reader. Sometimes, though, when I'm reading a thick book or a difficult nonfiction book, or a book in Japanese, I'll match it with something easier.

message 1143: by [deleted user] (new)

I read only one book at a time. I don't know how people juggle two or more books. I'm now reading Backfire (FBI Thriller, #16) by Catherine Coulter

message 1144: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn Meredith | 19 comments I always read two books at a time--and writing one too. Always done it that way.

message 1145: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 131 comments I used to be a one-book-at-a-time reader. But, for the last few years, I've started reading at least three books at once--a paperback at work, a paperback at home and an ebook on my Kindle. I don't think I could handle much more than that, though. :)

message 1146: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) I seem to always have at least two books going. As long as they are sufficiently different in either gernre or at least setting, I can switch between them much like channel surfing on the tube.

message 1149: by Morgan (new)

Morgan St. (morganstjames) | 9 comments Having always been a multi-tasker, it doesn't stop with reading books. I usually have one audio book going, one on the Kindle app on my and one paperback. Besides that I'm generally working on writing at least two books.Thankfully, I'm able to keep all of the plots straight.

message 1150: by Peter (new)

Peter Glassman (pglassma) | 17 comments Before I became an author I used to read 2-3 books as concurrent ongoing perusal efforts. Each book was read on different days. Today after writing my 10th novel,I only have time for reading one book a week while I have 3 writing projects at different levels of completion and assigned a different day to keep story line and characters aligned.
