Hayley Stewart Yup, bravo! Better memory than me :D
Hmm, notice how no-one's coming on here to join the hate... hmmm :S

message 903: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart Oh well,I did try to keep it on topic, honest! Sorry Kimberley, looks like my timezone doesn't hold up!
Ah well, if HP was real and I was a witch at least I wouldn't have to worry about heartless car drivers knocking me off my bicycle (or at the very least I could've cursed him!)
That's another thing I have against HP (and Disney too!) Raising our hopes and dreams as children that magic and good always triumphing over evil etc etc really exists - that's just mean, I was hoping my boarding school would at least have moving stairs!

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) YES it is mean. But in other ways they're trying to make kids have imaginations. Now, before you tell me I don't understand about the pain of learning that the things you believed in are not true for magic and stuff. I knew that fairy-tales aren't true, and all that. But I did believe in Santa Claus. When I was told by my annoying brother that he wasn't real, and I went to my mom an SHE told me the truth I burst into tears. :( Very sad day for me.

message 905: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart I know, I get the whole imagination thing - but I want a knight in shining armour on a white steed darn it :P Hmm, if I put the rose-tinted glasses back on it could work ;)

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) :) *laughs* Me too. Especially my sister. There's only two daughters in my family- me and my sister. My sister's the boy-crazy girl. :)

message 907: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart Haha, I remeber just after seeing Aladdin for the first time - me and my sister could not go in large dept stores w/out sitting on every rug there :D
With HP my mum found a guy near us who was pretty good with woodwork, so I got a wand outta it ;) That rocked!

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) COOL! I want my own made for me wand....:( *pouts*

message 909: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart Aww, to be fair, this was probably a random request for this guy, who usually stuck to carving walking sticks!

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) :) I bet it felt good doing something else thoughh.

Ana ya, i like twilight too, but i'm not an hp fan, or a bieber. no way in hell will i ever be a bieber. they were going to name a street after him for crying out loud! wat is that?!?!?!

message 913: by [deleted user] (new)

That's terrible!! Justin Bieber doesn't deserve a record deal OR a street named after him. I babysit a four year old who's scared of him because she thought he was gonna come to her house!! I felt sad because she cried but doesn't that say something?

message 914: by Ana (new) - rated it 1 star

message 915: by Nurlely (last edited Aug 20, 2011 06:20AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nurlely That is something. I had a strong feeling that the Twilight part does not exactly reveal the awful things in it. It seemed to have been created by HP hater...:)

It should have added some missing and laughable parts in Twilight below:
The lamest male character in the fantasy novels aka Jacob. The stupid girl who wants to end up her life for missing her love. The funny marble skin stone, but not the whole part of the body. The death body and no soul but living fluid...:)) What a messy fantasy writing.

message 916: by Ana (new) - rated it 1 star

Ana no one ever said it made sense

message 917: by Sophia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sophia You are MOST certainly, the only one who hates Harry Potter.

message 918: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart Would like to say that whilst my big sis loves HP her boyfriend has refused to ever read the books, see the films, have anything HP related in their flat/his sight. This is why she then has to rely on me or one of her friends being ok with her dragging us along to the cinemas to see the films.
Not sure why he's so anti Harry Potter, he just is.

message 919: by Ana (new) - rated it 1 star

Ana my friend's family thinks i'm a disgrace because i don't like hp and they all obsess over it. :D

Nurlely Siyana wrote: "no one ever said it made sense"

It has nothing to do with sense Siyana. It just missed the true fact about Twilight messy fantasy...:)

Nurlely I seriously can not understand why people hate Harry Potter. I could not even find any haters here. I did ask people I know if they hate it. Most of them glared at me and some even thought there was something wrong with me.

Mickey Here are some criticisms about Harry Potter. I got this from Wikipedia site on Harry Potter:

Michael Rosen, a novelist and poet, advocated the books were not suited for children, who would be unable to grasp the complex themes. Rosen also stated that "J. K. Rowling is more of an adult writer."[102] The critic Anthony Holden wrote in The Observer on his experience of judging Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the 1999 Whitbread Awards. His overall view of the series was negative—"the Potter saga was essentially patronising, conservative, highly derivative, dispiritingly nostalgic for a bygone Britain", and he speaks of "pedestrian, ungrammatical prose style".[103] Ursula Le Guin said, "I have no great opinion of it. When so many adult critics were carrying on about the 'incredible originality' of the first Harry Potter book, I read it to find out what the fuss was about, and remained somewhat puzzled; it seemed a lively kid's fantasy crossed with a "school novel", good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited."[104]

I like Harry Potter, but I find it disturbing that there are fans who think that no one can dislike Harry Potter.

message 925: by Ana (new) - rated it 1 star

Ana imma post this fabulous link again, and i firmly believe you should click on it. it's fabulous!
http://cdn.smosh.com/smosh-pit/092010... u hav not seen a funnier, more awesome thing ever. it really covers all of the bases of an average hp fan. i have one thing left to say: twilight is better than harry potter

Weirdology I'm a major HP fan and I think that pic is funny, even the HP part. But I agree with Nurlely that it seems biased against HP because the HP column was the worst of the two. I bet they could have come up with worse and funnier ones for Justin and Twilight too.

And Siyana, the first time you posted that it was okay and I didn't think you had any negative intentions. And I did enjoy it, so thanks for sharing it, really. But the second time I get the feeling your just trying to piss off HP fans. I'm sure you failed.

"it really covers all of the bases of an average hp fan"

This is what gave you away. It was uncalled for. Even your last sentence I would have found funny if this wasn't included. I think your're just trolling and trying too hard to piss people off.

If I'm wrong and I misread you then I apologize in advance.

Ana the whole thing is for people who hate harry potter... so i have one question, wat are all of the fans doing here?

Michelle Kayla wrote: "The stupid book has no point at all! Only complete idiots would read Harry Potter!"

I hate to point out the obvious but...

If you haven't read Harry Potter - how can you have an opinion? If you have read Harry Potter - then you must be a "complete idiot" (your words, not mine.)

message 929: by Nurlely (last edited Aug 21, 2011 03:18AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nurlely Mickey wrote: "I like Harry Potter, but I find it disturbing that there are fans who think that no one can dislike Harry Potter. "

Thanks for that but reading his comment is like reading haters comments. What would they expect from fantasy series? A literature?

Nurlely Siyana wrote: "the whole thing is for people who hate harry potter... so i have one question, wat are all of the fans doing here?"

It means that hating is your option but bad intention is something else. Ones with bad intention will gain no other result rather than hate and it is useless to try to open their minds and totally wasting energy in joining a discussion.

Weirdology Siyana wrote: "the whole thing is for people who hate harry potter... so i have one question, wat are all of the fans doing here?"

There's a difference between hating a book and hating on fans of that book. You could have maturely stated why you hate HP, but instead you choose to insult fellow members of this website, who you know are going to read your comments. Just like the person who started this whole thread did. She wasn't really looking for a discussion on the negative points of HP, and neither are you. This site is supposed to be about books. If you want to insult people then go find one of those silly hate blogs.

message 932: by Ana (new) - rated it 1 star

Ana i've read harry potter and don't like it. i've already stated my reasoning. and don't feel like doing so again. it was quite long the first time...

Vampiria My son is on book four and i am right behind him. we both love harry potter.

Jacquel Siyana wrote: "the whole thing is for people who hate harry potter... so i have one question, wat are all of the fans doing here?"

Every time a person says they hate Harry Potter, the fans come out and bash them until they concede. What is wrong with not liking Harry Potter? He is NOT the be-all of fantasy. People can either accept the fact that there will be those who hate Harry Potter or shut up.

Nurlely Jacquel Chrissy Pattinson wrote: "...What is wrong with not liking Harry Potter? He is NOT the be-all of fantasy. People can either accept the fact that there will be those who hate Harry Potter or shut up. "

I think not all fans come out and bash the haters. Have you read the previous comments here? We differentiate ones who hate Harry Potter with ones who have bad intention. Calling HP fans idiots for reading HP was a superb way in attracting fans' anger.

And asking others to shut up was weird considering this is discussion forum. Or perhaps you forgot.

message 936: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart Wow, disappear for a busy weekend and come back to this - really thought we'd started to make progress :(

It's amazing how if this were any other book (Twilight excepted) the people who didn't like it wouldn't have been bashed so much or (in the case of the OP) considered acting like such a troll and insulting the fans and there wouldn't be people who do like it failing to accept other people's opinions.

Thank goodness for us sensible people who can see both sides ;P

This is almost like me going onto a Twilight sectiona nd starting a tread there with the exact same 1st post. Only, I've read one chapter of Twilight and have no real right to start bashing the book or it's fans. I would have to accept that there will be fans who will be intrigued by the thread and then be annoyed by that and the subsequent comments.

So, let's accept that the first poster probably just wanted to start an argument and go the other way - actually discussing the book, haters and fans alike. I can accept that there were bits of HP that needed work and were perhaps that step beyond OTT, I'm sure others can as well.

Nurlely Anyone can criticize any books here. Attacking the lovers or the haters is not the way of having a discussion. But sometimes they involved themselves too deep in the story and ended up being the defenders or offenders.

It is sometimes difficult for HP lovers to accept some haters' comments due to their poor delivering. A comment like HP readers are idiots is actually revealing the hater's quality. Someone who should learn how to have a proper discussion.

I wonder what is the definition of making progress. If the readers do not have total understanding about a book, a good explanation will make the reader change their mind. But coming to a discussion with hatred will not result anything but a fighting spirit against the 'opponents'

message 938: by Hayley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hayley Stewart I am more than happy to read well rounded/informed criticisms about a book, any book, but as you said, some people do get too deeply involved to be able to be anything but a 'lover' or 'hater'.

I agree - if you're going to discuss the reasons you dislike/'hate' a book I do think it'd be best to have the full knowledge or at least have read the book first (some of them can start off on the wrong foot and take some work) before getting on the offensive. Otherwise just state 'I did not read the entire book so can't make a proper decision however, what I read of it, gave me the impression that...' That's if you feel you have to say anything at all and not just lurk around or move on.

A good explanation won't always make a person change their mind but it can help in allowing them to make better informed decisions. They may still dislike the book due to their own, personal tastes - but at least they know why.

As stated before - I won't go on a Twilight or Wuthering Heights thread to say I don't like the books as I've never really been inclined to read them so have no real knowledge. I will, however, go on Ian McEwan's Child In Time and say exactly what I thought about that depressing, pointless, annoying waste of a school year because I was made to read it time and time again >:( I have the knowledge of what this book was about (and what my teacher thought we should think that this book might be about) so will vent my deep seated resentment quite happily thank you very much :P

What I'm trying to say is come to a discussion with information, facts and good conversation, especially if you expect/want the same back :)

message 939: by [deleted user] (new)

I like Harry Potter a lot, but I don't think that people who don't are bad. Everyone has a different kind of taste in books. I like fantasy and realistic fiction. My best friend likes mysteries and hates fantasy. That doesn't change a thing between us.

Oh the irony!

Proposition 1: Harry Potter is not worth reading and is drivel because it is dark.

Proposition 2: Lord of the Rings is a great book for kids to read...

Sorry lady but have you read LOTR? Let me tell you... that's just as dark as Rowling's work... I'm not saying I disagree with your conclusion, only your flawed logic. Try taking a logic class and come back to argue when you can make a statement without a major logical fallacy. lolol

Oh and what was that drivel about your kids being honor students? As if that has any bearing on the conversation...

The more I read the better it gets... Lemony Snickett isn't dark?

message 941: by Ashlyn (last edited Aug 24, 2011 01:35PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ashlyn i praise J.K Rowling to the sky. Kids theses days are always on eletronics and dont use there brain as much as they should.

Not only did J.K rowling write a fantastic book but she got millions of children reading when they didn't in the first place. after they read Harry Potter, they wanted more like it. they thirsted for more of the written word. and what is so bad about that? why are you down playing a book tht had brought so many happiness, idea, and creativity to not just children but adults too? how many author did that, huh?

instead of looking at something and seeing all the bad stuff, look at the good and then judge. not only that, look inside you and see the truth of what you are saying about this book. do you really hate it or do you not understand it, everyone is different. i hate romance novels or books about love drama like sisterhood of the travling pants! but lots of people love it and im fine with that. who cares if i hate it and some people love it. if everyone liked or hated the same thing, it would prove a dull world.

message 942: by Joanne (new) - rated it 1 star

Joanne I read the first HP book to my grandsons. They liked it at first, but grew tired of it. I was tired of it by page two.

Nurlely My 60 years old Boss loves HP so much. In fact, he was the one who introduced me to HP and joined him as HP lovers. We have his HP books now at our office library and our students have been reading and loving them...:)

message 944: by Ashley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ashley Disliking something because it is popular is a waste of time in my opinion.

Although I enjoyed the books, I can understand why some people may not have. They are not books that will change your life, or have you discover something about yourself. They are entertaining and the world is rich. What I find interesting is that a lot of people don't list specific reasons for why they dislike it, reading a few pages is not enough to make a concrete judgement.

The thing is HP is not meant to be something as profound literary wise as Shakespeare or Tolstoy. Its popular fiction, not literary genius. I think JK Rowling created an incredible world. I enjoyed it but I don't take it seriously. I won't think about it as a story that taught me anything other than how to enjoy a book. If I wanted something more than fun fluff, I'd read something serious.

On a final note, addressing the opinion that it is dark. Well isn't our own world a little dark sometimes?

message 945: by Ashley (last edited Aug 25, 2011 11:43AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ashley Kimberly, I joined the thread because I could understand why people who read it didn't like it, because like anything else not everything is for everyone. I'm just not picky, I'll read anything.

I didn't like HP because it was popular. I liked it because the world was so rich. Sadly a lot of people read it because of it's popularity. Just like movies and music. That doesn't make it bad. Popular is for people who don't know how to find it on their own.

There is so much out there to be discovered. And sadly there are a lot of authors that I think are better than JK Rowling, and they don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve.

Also I totally agree with you about Beiber, yuck! I really don't get why girls are screaming about him. Can someone tell me why they like that high voiced girl? Am I just too old to get it?

message 946: by Joanne (new) - rated it 1 star

Joanne Bieber...I think it's a fad syndrome like Tickle Me Elmo. Of course at 68 I may be far too old to get it.

LOL I'm only 28 and I don't get it, so who knows what it is. I'm just not drinking the punch.

What's more sad is why Twilight is so popular, well I mean I get why it's so popular, teen angst yearning and romance. But it's not written very well and the characters are flat. At least JK Rowling's characters have some dimension, some not a lot. I would have liked to see more individuality, flaws, and actual inner turmoil. But that's asking for a lot. I liked the creativity, in the HP world. Twilight was very bland. LOL and I'll never get over sparkly vampires, its just wrong. I like Kim Harrison's vampires, they're actually scary, and unpredicatable.

message 949: by Joanne (new) - rated it 1 star

Joanne Last summer my son in Seattle rented a cabin in La Push. He was clueless about the Twilight series, just liked the remote area. Everywhere we went, like beautiful isolated (I should be so lucky) beaches, tour buses would arrive and spill out eager Twilight fans. They talked like the characters and events were real. Someone arrived with a big truck, and was going to take a load of sand from First Beach to bag and sell. The local tribe intervened. People are crazy.

I'd be really upset if my vacation was covered with crazy Twilight fans. HP has them too, though, the people who dress up and go over the top with their like of the story. I've read both of the series, and neither one deserves the hero worship involved.

Geez I'm not sure which is worst stealing sand, or the people willing to pay for it.
