That is what makes me sad. She probably soaked up a few more millions for that book and there are so many more talented authors out there who are just scrapping by trying to make a living. :(

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments @Brigid, @Heidi, @Jenny

The funny thing is, if it was an exercise in exposing sexism, it could have been effing brilliant haha. Even if you're not a fan. Instead, from the excerpts I saw, she just wrote a main character worthy of as much question as male authors get when they write awful, cliche female characters.

Tommy since I always thought Edward was a controlling cold (literally hahaha) jerk I think your idea of flipping roles to expose sexism would have been very interesting. Opportunity missed.

I'm currently reading...
This Pen for Hire by Laura Levine

It was available in my library so I borrowed it. I feel a bit overwhelmed with YA for now. So a nice cozy will be a good thing. Plus, I saw Heidi give it a good review ^_^

Finished:

The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #1) by Rick Riordan

I liked it more than I thought I would, actually. I never expected it to be as good as PJO (and it wasn't), but I still thought it was a fun read. Didn't love the main character, but I really liked most of the secondary characters.

Now I am going to start:

We Were Here by Matt de la Pena

I saw the author talk at Boston Book Fest, and talked to him briefly afterward, and he seemed really cool––so I'm excited to read his work. :)

HEIDI: I thought so too, I was actually laughing at some parts of the book.

BRIGID: I was going to start this series, but I'm not sure I want to now. I saw that post you made on The Trials of Apollo, I think I'll just wait for that series to be released.

Hmm, well I think Sword of Summer is worth reading if you're a Riordan fan––it's fun and has some cute little references to PJO. But I also wouldn't say it's a must-read or anything. :D Yes, I'm really excited for Trials of Apollo! I hope it's good. I'm a little nervous about there being yet another PJO spin-off (and it's going to be 5 books!! but at least it looks like they'll be shorter than the Heroes of Olympus ...) but what the heck, I can't wait to read it anyway. ;)

same here. I actually don't mind another PJO spin-off cause I like seeing how the characters has grown. I hope he mentions some of the characters in Heroes of Olympus.

I finished:

We Were Here by Matt de la Pena

And I really enjoyed it! I had a few issues with it (mainly, that I found the portayal of one character kind of racist??) but otherwise, it was a really compelling book.

I'm now trying to read some shortish middle-grade books (so I can meet my yearly goal, shhh), so I'm reading:

Nightmares! (Nightmares!, #1) by Jason Segel The Penderwicks A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy (The Penderwicks #1) by Jeanne Birdsall

@Becky and Dixie - I'm about halfway through The Penderwicks and I'm really enjoying it––it's very cute and funny. :) Dixie it's interesting that you bring up Little Women because it does kind of have an old-fashioned/nostalgic vibe to it. It's modern-day but it seems to have a lot of influence from Victorian-era children's literature.

Finished:

The Penderwicks A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy (The Penderwicks #1) by Jeanne Birdsall

It was really cute! I loved it. :) I will soon start the second one:

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street (The Penderwicks, #2) by Jeanne Birdsall

But I also want to start at least one of my new library books! So I think I will also start:

The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman

This morning I read all of:

The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman

Cool book! Really awesome illustrations, and an interesting Sleeping Beauty/Snow White retelling. ;)

I'm also in the middle of:

Nightmares! (Nightmares!, #1) by Jason Segel

It's getting more interesting as it goes along. The main character is now in this other/nightmare world and the world-building is really cool––so I'm hoping the second half is more exciting than the first half!

And I also started:

Wolf By Wolf (Wolf By Wolf, #1) by Ryan Graudin

I love what I've read of it so far––hopefully I'm not speaking too soon. :D

I don't remember many specifics, but I recall Nightmares! hitting its stride roughly halfway through and being better from that point on. It was more interesting than good, but still wasn't bad, if that makes sense haha.

Good to know! I know what you mean––I think conceptually it's more interesting than the execution. There are some cool aspects of the "world" in it but the writing and characters aren't super amazing.

message 9489: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I can't remember the last time I did an update--but I'm in the middle of several books right now!

On audio-- Sea of Stars (Kricket, #2) by Amy A. Bartol which is so good!
In ebook-- The Year We Fell Down (The Ivy Years, #1) by Sarina Bowen This is my "Y" book for my ABC challenge, then I'll be done!
Library books-- Virginia Woolf by Nigel Nicolson --I wanted to read one more nonfiction book this year-- and Manners & Mutiny (Finishing School, #4) by Gail Carriger which is good so far!

message 9497: by Ashley Marie (last edited Dec 22, 2015 12:29PM) (new)

Ashley Marie I've finally gotten back to Everlost (Skinjacker, #1) by Neal Shusterman -- it's very bizarre, in a (I guess?) good way, LOL.

Also reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson Spencer's Mountain by Earl Hamner Jr.
Looking forward to finishing the books I'm currently reading so I can start January fresh!
