Kaylani (cityeclectics) | 277 comments The book has a very modern Alice in Wonderland feel and it is just... really hard to explain. I don't know that I've quite read anything like it to compare it to!

The Diviners is on my list of to-read.

The new Diviners book comes out the 25th of this month and its called Lair of Dreams :)

Im really enjoying Son of Neptune. I'm glad that Percy is in it. I really don't know why I'm always so hesitant to read this series, but when I start it I can't put it down!

message 8810: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Since I last posted I finished a reread of Umbrella Academy, Vol.1 The Apocalypse Suite (The Umbrella Academy, #1) by Gerard Way which I love and a first time read of I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies, #1) by Pittacus Lore which I enjoyed far more than I expected.

Up next, probably Rotters by Daniel Kraus

Yay! I love when I find a series I fall in love with - it doesn't happen a lot with me so it makes me happy :)

Yayy!! I think House of Hades was my favorite in that series, but I really enjoy all the books-- I just forget how much I love them until I read them again ;) lol

Trying to find the last time I posted here... oh, yes. I enjoyed The Road, and LOVED A Monster Calls (dying for the movie now) and I've been sucked into The Girl Who Played With Fire, and I'm enjoying it much more than the first book probably because there's not a lot of setup to do in this one and we can just jump right into the action. Should be finished with it today.

Also currently reading Throne of Glass and Hunger Games... Throne of Fire seems to have taken a backseat for the time being, unfortunately. But I am determined to finish everything!

I skipped I Am Number Four for some reason - something about the way it was written or the author?? I can't remember!

Jason Isaacs' narration was absolutely PERFECT for A Monster Calls, and knowing that Liam Neeson is set to play the monster... I dunno but Jason's voice for the monster actually sounded a bit like Liam to me, so I'm super-excited lol

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Heidi (Yup. Still here.) wrote: "I skipped I Am Number Four for some reason - something about the way it was written or the author?? I can't remember!"

There was a lot of politics involved in the way it was written. It was like, an unknown teaming with an established author(I want to say James Patterson, but don't quote me), and the unknown doing basically all the writing work while the established pulled all the publishing and marketing strings and took the bulk of the profits, while also using a pseudonym which took away a lot of exposure for the unknown.

I don't remember it fully, but I will say, either way, the book was surprisingly good. And I thought I was late to the series, but there's still 2 more books coming out.

message 8818: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 836 comments Yeah, Tommy's exactly right. It was basically a book factory in which the actual writers got the raw deal. But I agree, they are entertaining books!

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I'm a little more than halfway through The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1) by Rae Carson .

I just finished reading Once Upon a Marigold (Upon a Marigold, #1) by Jean Ferris to my kids. I had enjoyed the third book (Thrice Upon a Marigold) but was disappointed with Once Upon a Marigold. And it's Junior Fiction, since my youngest is 6 and I probably shouldn't read YA to her. :)

Yeah, it was James Frey (aka the author of A Million Little Pieces which is infamous for being a "memoir" that turned out to be totally made-up). He hired ghostwriters to write the I Am Number Four series for him (under a pen name) and apparently treated/paid them very poorly. The whole thing was quite sketchy.

I still tried to give the book a chance since so many people like it, but honestly it's one of my least favorite things I've ever read. x_x I was hoping for something more sci-fi but it felt more like just another paranormal romance to me.

Anyway! Currently I am reading:

Everybody Sees the Ants by A.S. King

It's been really slow-going for me. I'm a bit disappointed since I've heard lots of good things about A.S. King and this is the first book of hers that I've read ... but just like, not much happens in it, it's kind of sexist (and has a Manic Pixie Dream Girl subplot, aggh), and the surreal aspect isn't really working for me. I might give some of her other books a chance, though.

Please let me know if you like it if you do try it. I read it in print so no audiobook issue there. I checked Everybody See the Ants and it is narrated by one of my favorite male narrators so I think he helped that book for me.

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Finished Magnolia by Kristi Cook and I really loved this book! It was basically the exact opposite of Romeo and Juliet. I loved the southern feel, and the whole hurricane sequence, which was about a third of the book had me hooked! 4 stars.

Also finished The Golden Lily (Bloodlines, #2) by Richelle Mead which I LOVED.

Right now reading The One (The Selection, #3) by Kiera Cass and rereading Siege and Storm (The Grisha, #2) by Leigh Bardugo

Frey, not Patterson, whoops. At least I got James right. Not bad for news I heard years ago haha.

I can see where you came that the "just another paranormal romance" conclusion. I actually agree with that. It just felt like a Pararomance done better than i usually see it done, subjectively at least. I'm hoping to get more scifi bits as the series goes on.
I am an easily pleased reader, though. The science in my fiction doesn't need to be too "sciencey" to work for me. Just the fact that they are aliens that traveled here by spaceship is enough to keep me happy haha. i do hope for more though.

message 8832: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments The romance takes a major backseat in the sequel. Lots more action! I've only read the first two, but hoping to get all caught up on this series by the end of the year!

YA paranormal romance is one of my least favorite genres so I am guessing I wouldn't like it then. It is very rare for me to like books in that genre. Weirdly I have several adult paranormal books I love like Kate Daniels and the Fever series.

message 8840: by Kaylani (new)

Kaylani (cityeclectics) | 277 comments I need to finish:
Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness Triangles by Ellen Hopkins Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater Boy 21 by Matthew Quick Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls, #1) by Ally Carter Lucky by Alice Sebold John Dies at the End (John Dies at the End, #1) by David Wong Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Code Name Verity (Code Name Verity, #1) by Elizabeth Wein The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

Sort of went through a "I can't find the 5 books I was reading so I'll just start this one..." and now I'm reading like 15 books at once phase. -_-

I generally feel the same way about YA paranormal romance. Not even kind of a big fan of it. Hence the shock that I liked the book so much. It's so not my usual cup of tea.

But the, paranormal is such a wide-spanning term, that it encompasses a lot. And then if any of those books have a plot-central romance, that would mean many, many books, on some level or another, are paranormal romance, even ones not labeled as such. There's bound to be exceptions.

Not trying to sell you on it at all, btw haha. If you're set on not reading it, there are plenty of other great things out there to read. I just like philosophizing haha.

Kaylani (cityeclectics) | 277 comments I skipped I am Number Four because of the politics too.
That said, I have several friends that like it and several friends that wont read it because of politics and several friends that didn't.

I'm just not super interested in supporting Frey when there are tons of authors out there that are honest and filled with integrity. :)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments I finished Rotters by Daniel Kraus last night, and while it sounded kind of interesting, I am surprised at how much I loved it. Very, very good. Most of you folks should read, but fans of The Monstrumologist series absolutely should.

Up next, The Zodiac Legacy Convergence (Zodiac, #1) by Stan Lee , which I just know is superhero related and had Stan Lee's name on the cover.

I love John Green, and had been kind of saving this book for a treat. Does anybody else do that? :) An Abundance of Katherines is still my favorite book of his. I haven't gotten up my nerve to read Looking for Alaska yet. I figure it will be a "hard" read. Anybody else read that one? I finished Paper Towns in two days. 5 stars :)
