BRIGID: How is the series of How to Train a Dragon? Is it worth getting into? I've seen the movie and I love it! Do you think I'll enjoy the book as well?

I felt the same way about Incarceron - I did not get into any of the characters.

Gisselly I was not a big fan of the first book in the Maze Runner series but I know a lot of others here were. Do you like it? I am fairly picky so am used to being in the minority on my opinions :)

message 7005: by Gisselly (new)

Gisselly | 5 comments It was good and had action and many plot twist. There have been better books and I feel like this series is good if you want to like slow down with your reading

@Bluemoon - Haha same ... I am pretty obsessed with the movies which is why I'm reading the books. :) The books are very different from the movies––by which I mean, practically nothing about them is the same except the characters' names, haha. Also they're more on the children's/middle grade side, but they're very cute and funny and I enjoy them.

@Heidi - Yeah ... I finished it today and still didn't feel very attached to any of the characters at the end. Oh well. I still might try to read the sequel.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments Heidi, my son is 9 but reads at a pretty high level. So How to TrIn Your Dragon should be good except that he'll fly through them.

BECKY: Have you tried Suzanne Collin's Underland Chronicles? It's an action packed series that you can't put down! Also the Kingdom Keeper series is worth checking out.

I borrowed them once for my son but he was distracted by Harry Potter. I will try them again.

Finished:

Hopeless (Hopeless, #1) by Colleen Hoover

Ehh, I didn't like it very much. Another creepy/stalkerish romance in my opinion. :-/

Now I'm re-reading:

The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan

Because I never tire of Percy Jackson. <3

Why is that such a thing lately? So bizarre :p. I keep thinking that young women are reading these things and thinking it's normal.

message 7012: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
I was wondering about that about Hopeless Brigid. I bought it on sale but haven't read it yet because I was afraid it was another Beautiful Disaster type read.

message 7013: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
@Kristen - Yeah, that's part of what disturbs me. Like, the book has so many reviews and such a high average rating and so many reviewers gushing about how the love interest is so wonderful. And I'm like .... eeeek. Firstly, he stalks the protagonist. Secondly, he has a bad temper and the first few times the protagonist meets him she describes him as scary/terrifying/unpredictable/etc. And he once beat a guy nearly to death, but it's passed off as "justified" because the guy said something bad about his sister. ... Yeah, sounds appealing. :P

@Heidi - I also bought it when it was on sale even though I had similar fears about it. But it has so many glowing reviews so I thought maybe I was wrong ... I haven't read Beautiful Disaster but from what I've heard about it, I think it has a lot of similar issues.

message 7014: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments The high reviews scare me even more. I was talking to a woman about a program she has set up for at-risk youth, where they worship guys like this in the books. They go in and teach them about the tenets of self-respect and teach them to analyze how people treat them. They start out really liking books like Twilight, then end up realizing how messed up they are. But the problem is that not all people have that sort of guidance. I don't mean to soapbox, but it says a lot about our society that these things sell well and are considered romantic. Shudder.

message 7015: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
Kristen we are on the same page! Why people think someone like Christian Grey, Edward, or Travis from Beautiful Disaster are swoon worthy is beyond me. They are abusive a**holes IMO.

message 7016: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
@Kristen - Yikes ... That's awesome of her to run that program, but like you said it's unfortunate that not all teenage girls have that kind of guidance. And I agree, it is a huge societal problem, because girls are conditioned to believe that it's okay for men to stalk and control them––especially if they're attractive men. Uggh.

@Heidi - Agreed!

I am nearing the half way point of Partials Partials (The Partials Sequence, #1) by Dan Wells and am wondering if it picks up at all. My mind is starting to wonder and that it not a good sign.

I find its description *interesting*. "For fans of The Hunger Games, Battlestar Galactica, and Blade Runner comes the first book in the Partials Sequence, a fast-paced, action-packed, and riveting sci-fi teen series, by acclaimed author Dan Wells"

That's kind of big hype to live up to...not a fan of when publishers do that because it sounds like the book stands on bloat rather than legs. I tend to automatically skip over books that try that sort of marketing, but I'm curious what you guys think when you're through with it (Heidi.. and Brigid, if you do read it)

I got it for free from the library Kristen so I am ok if I end up not liking it. I actually love BSG but see no resemblance so far!

I love all three of those, but I just meant that if a book feels the need to call out the biggest guns (c'mon, two of the top SciFi grossing franchises of all time and the hottest dystopian series in the past decade?) all in the same sentence, it feels a little contrived :).

But hey, if it matches that tall order, I'll read. Let me know when you're through :D.

I knew what you meant. I normally shy away from books with captions like that because I generally hate them. Someone on here told me I might like it so I got it but now I can't remember who what was!

I do hope it gets better for you.

I kind of thought of it as more original than all of those...I'm not sure I can really compare it to anything. Its the book I compare other sci-fi dystopians to! It gets more "sci-fi" the further in the series you get.

message 7039: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
I am over half done Jenny and book one is more sci fi than dystopian so far IMO but it is kind of a mixture of both too. Hard to pinpoint :)

What is Love Letters to the Dead Gisselly??

message 7041: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Yeah, Heidi, the author classifies it as "Post Apocalyptic" and "Sci-Fi." The second book has more of the "Journey" factor (one of my favorites in any book) and I loved it! Dan Wells is really nice, and awesome, he did a Q&A on David's group in May if you want to read it!

Ashley Marie Heidi *Listen. I'll just keep talking anyway. * wrote: "What is Love Letters to the Dead Gisselly??"

it's about a girl who has to write a letter to a dead person for a school project -- she picks Kurt Cobain. and then she goes on and writes more, to people like Heath Ledger and Amy Winehouse and a bunch of others, and I guess her sister died young too so there's that. I haven't read it yet but it sounds really good and I need to get it from the library soon :D

Anyway, I finished re-reading The Titan's Curse, so now it's on to:

The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4) by Rick Riordan

YAY. Books 4 and 5 are my favorite, so I'm excited to read them again. ;)

I just found one called The Tone Poet on Netgalley that sounds really interesting.
