I really liked that first one. I have the other two but haven't finished them yet.
I have just added Talking About Detective Fiction to my to read list. I have kept this quote by P. D. James asmy "to go to" quote. "Why mysteries,---confirms our belief despite evidence to the contrary, that we live in a rational, comprehensible and moral universe."
Don't you just love it???????????????????

Reading The Secret in Their Eyes Argentina during the dirty war and a retired clerk writing a book about a murder he could not forget.
Ken wrote: "SK is kind of hit and miss for me. "I know I am definitely in a minority here, but SK is more of a 'miss' for me. I've read several of his earlier books although Firestarter was the only one that I liked well enough to ever re-read. I finished a couple of others, though don't recall the titles at the moment and then there were several I didn't finish, so gave up. Not sure what my issues with his writing are, but I've just never gotten into his books.
I prefer Dean Koontz's books (again, the earlier ones) which I began reading about the same time I tried SK ... though I gave up with his later books as well.

Have you read A Crown of Swords before? I LOVE that series, and am reading The Eye of the World to my kids right now. They are completely drawn in.
Well, we will never get along. I feel about Dean Koontz the way you feel about SK. I read a couple and they were interesting because they were set in OC locals I was familiar with.Besides, Dean Koontz is far creepier looking than King.

Thanks for the tip Gatorman :)
Reading The Secret in Their Eyes which is set in Argentina, ,in the 1970's during their dirty war. A retired clerk writes a book about a murder he could never forget. Quite good and extremely easy to read. Also reading an ARC of The Darlings which is about the Wall St. set and their downfall.

I enjoyed River of Darkness very much and am looking forward to reading the next one in 2012.
Ken wrote: "Well, we will never get along. I feel about Dean Koontz the way you feel about SK. "Oh, dear, obviously separate libraries! The DK books I like well enough to own and re-read are earlier ones and definitely limited ... Strangers, The Watchers and Lightning, dogs and more SF than horror. He started getting a little too 'over the top' for me somewhere in the mid-90s.
I'm thinking part of my aversion to SK may have been his book Cujo. I love dogs and have a friend that raised St. Bernards for many years, the biggest, happiest, goofs you would ever want to meet. Cujo definitely annoyed me. Maybe not rational, but then I never claimed I was ...
Have just finished the immensely enjoyable A Redbird Christmas - Fannie Flagg. I am now about to embark on reading Private London - James Patterson.
Jeanette wrote: "I just finished listening to

Just finished The Forgotten Garden, which I wasn't expecting to like so much. It's a grown up Gothic novel, The Secret Garden for Grown Ups, with a pretty good mystery.
Also finished Peter Pan, which I was expecting to like more. Surprisingly dull, and very ick-making.

Oddly enough, I just 'found' and re-read The Secret Garden recently, thanks to Kindle and discovered I liked it nearly as well as I did as a child. This sounds like it would definitely appeal to me ... looks like another to go on my wish list.
Thanks ... I think!
Hi Beth, Cutting for Stone was one of the best booksI have read this past year. For those who haven't read it, it is not a mystery, but it is soooooo good. Don't miss it. Am starting Booked to Die by John Dunning. I like it alot as in some ways it has the tone of a Mickey
Spillane, Raymond Chandler in that the narrator is the
cop, cliff Janeway, also a great lover of books. Dunning was in the book business. Love his reference to books and art in his story. Also his book tips are
great. If I like this book I will go on to the 2nd book in the series
I have started Cutting for Stone and so far not too excited over it (over 100 pages read so far). Course I didn't like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo either.Ken my tastes are eclectic which is why I haven't read SK, I haven't read any of the Harry potter or New moon either.
Has just finished Private London - James Patterson. In morning I will read There's Something About Christmas - Debbie Macomber.

I just finished
. I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I adored the characters and found myself laughing at some of their jabs to each other. The story took many turns and I had no idea who did it until it was laid out for me. It was a very enjoyable read and cannot wait to read the next one.

LOL Jannene, I know you are loving this series, I do want to get back to her, and I am sure it won't happen for me until next year. Enjoy!!

Hope you like it, Sharon. I adore the Secret Garden and I too re-read it recently. It was, as you said, almost as good now as it was then.

They make such a good combination together. I don't think the show would be the same if any one of them left.
I just finished
. I loved it. LOVED it! I put it in my "things I can read again" folder. Then I finished
, which reminded me of early Stephen King. I really loved this one, too. So much so that I decided to buy another book in the series and start that one rather than sticking to my already overflowing reading stack. The second book is
.
Just finished O is for Outlaw last night. I like to try to guess how far into the book her synthetic, wrinkle-free, all-purpose black dress will appear. Book for book the series is both fresh and consistent with familiar details such as that dress, Rosie's, the VW. I once caught myself thinking "Oh, just Google it" and once asking myself why she doesn't have a cell phone or at least caller ID. Keeping the timeline intact (the mid-80's) gives Kinsey some constraints to work within. Grafton does it all so well.
Reading the The Gravedigger's Ball and trying to figure out why the two people who have read it gave it such low ratings. I'm on page 138 and so far I am enjoying it. Also reading Until Thy Wrath Be Past.
Renee wrote: "Um, Beth? Are you working on the third in the series that started with DEADLY CURRENTS? Or is this a stand-alone? Looking forward to it! "Thanks for asking, Renee! I'm writing the rough draft of the third book in the RM Outdoor Adventures mystery series, which started with
Deadly Currents. I'm trying to finish the draft by mid-January when I receive the galley proof to edit for the second book, Wicked Eddies, which will be released in May.

I picked up Wicked at the library today. Some of my friends loved it, some hated it. Guess I'll have to see for myself.

just finished Christmas At Timberwoods(suspenseful novel) now reading Old Flames and Second Grave on the Left
halfway through Cutting for Stone and am grwoing to love it! how do you get those books to appear after a title?
You hit the "add book/author" then you type in the name and pick cover at the bottom. It will then pick the cover of the book.
, this is the book I think you mentioned.
I finished A Drop of the Hard Stuff
yesterday. I love this series. I think this book of this series may be singular in that I'm racking my brain and I don't think the protagonist had to resort to violence even once to solve his case-- very unusual if my memory is correct. Usually someone squares off on him at some point. Good book.

I think sometimes readers count a book's worth by the hefty weight of the tome. Historicals seem to fit that well, but mysteries... not so much.
