I finished Prophecy by S J Parris and really enjoyed it despite the fact that I have not read the first book in this series and this is the second.
The setting, London late 1500s, and the political/religious intrigues of the court of Elizabeth I were eeriely reminiscent of current events, different countries/religions of course, but the struggle for power and the minds of the people were the same.

Taking a break from Trophy Taker, The (as it's a bit much on my brain after reading a Crime/Thriller). So I've picked up The Boy Who Taught the Beekeeper to Read
I recently read "In the Woods" by Tana French and it was...well, I won't say, because it's being read now by this group! Let's just say that I immediately read her second book and ordered her third :)I also wanted to mention that my thriller "Five Days in Summer" is finally available as an e-book, and as a beautiful new trade paperback. (Lisa Gardner called it "Mermerizing" and it was a USA Today bestseller when it first came out in 2004).
Here's a link to Amazon in case you're interested in checking it out: http://www.amazon.com/Five-Days-Summe...
I've read a number of 'dark' stories lately, so this weekend I picked up the second of Toni McGee Causey's Bobbie Faye books Girls Just Wanna Have Guns. Love this character! Anybody have suggestions for other light mysteries that aren't cozies?
Hi Cathy, How about Shop Till You Drop by Elaine Viets or something by Donna Andrews or Janet Evanovich.

I hope you're both enjoying as much as I am so far. It's quite drawn me in. Very well-written.

Not started my copy yet x
Just finished Just One Look, my first Harlan Coben book whose name had been bandied about on this site. I enjoyed it; interesting characters with varied motives and a red herring or two. Good fun.
Just started The Priest last night. Came very close to staying up late. Not good for getting up in the morning.
Donna wrote Hi Cathy, How about Shop Till You Drop by Elaine Viets or something by Donna Andrews or Janet Evanovich. Hi Donna -
I laughed myself silly over the first Evanovich books but after about ten they were the same story with new explosions. I'll check into Andrews and Viets - thanks for the suggestions!
I just got Sworn to Silence from another Goodreads suggestion.
So many books...
Cathy wrote: "I've read a number of 'dark' stories lately... anybody know of a few good light mysteries"... I can recommend Shelley Adina's steampunk, Lady of Devices, which is a fabulous read set in Victorian London, and my own which will be coming out in August from Astraea Press, Double Crossing - set in 1869, see my website: http://www.double-crossing.com

I'm now reading The Knitting Diaries: The Twenty-First Wish\Coming Unraveled\Home to Summer Island by Debbie Macomber and Asylum Lake by R.A. Evans.
Just finished The Redbreast. I thought The Snowman might be too scary for me but wanted to read something by Jo Nesbo after seeing the interviews on YouTube. Now I think I'll have to read some more in the series because he very craftily left some threads hanging.

I've got his Nemesis on my TBR shelf, but considering how much I've enjoyed Redbreast, I think I'll be getting more of his books.
Bill wrote: "Dena wrote: "Just finished The Redbreast. As a committed reader of cozies I'm getting into dangerous territory here. I think I'll get it on Kindle and read it this afternoon. I'm living dangerously anyway, I'm not down in the basement in the middle of a Kansas thunderstorm.

I'm reading Which Big Giver Stole the Chopped Liver? by Sharon Kahn; I just recently discovered this "rabbi's wife" series and this is the third book I've read. Humorous cozies...good for a light read.
finished Room and enjoyed it. Now reading The Devil's Starand after having read half, I am having a difficult time getting into it...
I'm reading The Given Day by Dennis Lehane and so far it is really good. Saw him talk and from what he said about this book made me want to read it. So far I love it.
I'm reading Asylum Lake by R.A. Evans and will be starting Mercy by Julie Garwood today or tomorrow!
Finished Nemesis last night and immediately downloaded The Devil's Star. I did have enough self-control to stop reading at a reasonable time. When I find an author I like I tend to gobble all his or her books at once. Luckily I frequently re-read books I like, even mysteries. I'm really enjoying Jo Nesbo's writing although sometimes the translated words are a little odd, plasticated instead of plasticized and carer instead of caregiver were two examples. Maybe those are British usage.
I finished Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen last night. It's a quick read, I love magic realism and a satisfying ending - definitely recommended. I also loved her book The Sugar Queen.
Found America Pacifica disappointing and now reading Summer in the South by Cathy Holton and Misery Bay by Steve Hamilton which I know will be good.
Finished The Boy Who Taught the Beekeeper to Read - Susan Hill. Now going to start Bad Guys - Linwood Barclay.
Elizabeth wrote: "Reading "Red Wolf" Lisa Marklund and really liking it."Red Wolf
I've read most of Red Wolf, too, and think it's terrific so far. She's finally getting some of her newer books published in the US. I read 'Bomber' several years back and then she just fell off the radar here.
Getting ready to read, You've Been Warned by James Patterson. I bought it because it was a Patterson book and then decided to check the reviews on Amazon. Ugh. Not good. Oh well, we'll have to see what I think. He rarely lets me down.
Just finished the amazing Farthing by Jo Walton. Currently reading Sayers' The Documents in the Case. Started JO NESBO's The Snowman last night.
Jan C wrote: "Just started The Priest last night. Came very close to staying up late. Not good for getting up in the morning."Jan, let me know what you think. I had to put that one down ans it was just too slow to keep my interest.

That was in my last 'haul' from the library and was a DNF for me as well. Slow, which I can sometimes deal with if the characterization catches me, but this one just didn't.
Just starting "Halfhead" by Stuart McBride, a departure for me being a futuristic novel, but I'm giving it a go.
Mary wrote: "Just starting "Halfhead" by Stuart McBride, a departure for me being a futuristic novel, but I'm giving it a go."Hi Mary, I am a big fan of Stuart McBride but the futuristic setting of "Halfhead" was also a departure from my usual type of book but I enjoyed it. It still has McBride's wonderfully, black humour.

I just finished The Redbreast and enjoyed so very much. At the moment I've just started Blackfly Season by Giles Blunt and Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883 by Simon Winchester. I'm finding both quite interesting so far.

Wow. It starts out pretty good. Of course, I think I am only at Chapter 3 or something. Wait! Don't tell me where it bogs down. Let me see for myself.
Finished Deadline by Mira Grant (very good, sequel to Feed) and then read a sample of Before I Go to Sleep. This sounds very intriguing, but I am not inclined to pay more than 9.99 for a book in e....
