Steve Anderson | 87 comments Like Gatorman above, I just started Field Gray by Philip Kerr. It's historical crime noir: former Berlin detective Bernie Gunther has to come clean about his role in WWII, and the story switches between the 1940s and 1950s. Like it so far. It's already better than his last one and definitely my kind of story.

aprilla Finished Sharp Objects and enjoyed it so have started her second book (not a series) Dark Places and it's shaping up to be good too.

Marena | 35 comments Just finished The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo, and have started Nemesis. Absolutely loving him!

Elli | 228 comments Have both Field Gray and the Tin Ticket (non-fiction) about the women convicts from Great Britian who were sent to Australia on hold at the library. Just about half finished with Rough Trade by Dominique Manotti which I am enjoying. It's not a long book and moves really fast. And very easy to get into. She has written other things, was journalist by profession initially, really goes after her subject, but this may be the only translated novel.

I'm liking it a lot, too. Bernie is just a great character and Kerr's writing always fascinates me.

I'm reading #10 in the Russell/Holmes series, The God of the Hive. The previous one finished with a great big cliffhanger, so I am eager to see what will happen. Just love this series, as you all already know!

Also reading: Memoirs of a Geisha and The Persian Pickle Club

Happy Easter to all of you who are celebrating today.

message 2258: by Martina (new)

Martina Currently reading an e-galley of The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen. I'm enjoying this Danish crime novel immensely. Also listening to Henning Mankell's new/last Kurt Wallander novel, The Troubled Man. Ditto loving it as much as I've loved the entire series. In the car I'm listening to Ken Follett's Fall of Giants and it's another great historical exploration. Lenin just took the train from Switzerland through Germany and Scandinavia back to Russia... Also re-reading P. L. Gaus, Blood of the Prodigal for my Mystery Book Group meeting on Tuesday night. The first book in a series of mysteries set in Ohio in a strict Old Order Amish sect. Published originally in the late 1990s. I am more than half way through all the above! Don't usually read so many things at once... it just happened.

message 2259: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Just finished River of Darkness by Rennie Airth, a South African author. Set just after WWI, it deals with the psychological problems suffered by soldiers returning from the trenches and multiple murders which may be traced to a combat veteran. It's an excellent book and I believe he has written at least two more in this series, which I will be reading as well.

message 2260: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 7679 comments Jill wrote: "Just finished River of Darkness by Rennie Airth, a South African author. Set just after WWI, it deals with the psychological problems suffered by soldiers returning from the trenches ..."

Jill, I agree River of Darkness is a great book as are Airth's next two in the series,
The Blood-Dimmed Tide and The Dead of Winter. You should definitely read them as well.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments Finished a spy thriller, The Trinity Six, and will probably be starting Balance of Power, by Richard North Patterson.

message 2262: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (pamelaterry) Just finished Silent Partner. Gave it a 2 star rating. Ended up skimming about half way through just to get finished with it.

Samantha Flynn (SamanthaFlynn) | 3 comments I just read "One two he is coming for you" by T.P.Boje too and I LOVED it. It had me from the beginning to the end. As far as I can tell the author has written several books before this one but this is the first that is in English.

message 2265: by Mark (new)

Mark Yarwood | 14 comments I'm reading The BasementAt the moment and quite enjoying it. Love thriller parody Rotten Apple: Seven Deadly Stories From The City Of Sin. I'm a big fan of the old Jim Thompson books. Check him out. They recently made one of his books into a film: The Killing Inside Me.

message 2266: by Marena (new)

Marena | 35 comments Just finished Nemesis, The Devil's Star and The Redeemer by Jo Nesbo since the 23rd.....and, big surprise, am just about to start The Snowman by Jo Nesbo! Will have to rush out and buy The Leopard tomorrow, and a box of tissues since that will be the end of the series so far. Needless to say, I unreservedly recommend him if you haven't all already been there. Back to work tomorrow as well. Isn't it awful when reality intrudes on such good fiction?!

Carol Neman | 81 comments Message 2383 by Bill: I bought Hollow Chocolate Bunnies...by Robert Rankin for my grandson but haven't given it to him yet as I want to read it myself first and haven't had the time. I actually wanted to get the double-volume book (HCBotA plus The Toyminator), I think the whole thing is called Eddie Bear on Amazon. There are a couple of places that may not pass my daughter's inspection, so I definitely want to read it myself first.

Elli | 228 comments Dragon Chica, by Mai-Lee Chai, a professional Chinese translator. About a Chinese Cambodian family who fled the Khmer and came to the U.S. Told through the eyes of the second oldest daughter.

message 2269: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Who has read Ted Dekkar?.....and should I try one of his books. They certainly look interesting....and scary.

message 2270: by aprilla (new)

aprilla I read one (BoneMan's Daughter) and I won't be trying more, though it seemed my type of read. I didn't like his writing. The only way you'll know is to try him, loads of people love him.

message 2271: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Thanks, Aprilla..........I will look at the library. I don't like to buy books of which I am unsure.

message 2272: by T (last edited Apr 27, 2011 12:51PM) (new)

T (twoo) Hey Jill... I've read one of the Dekker books - Three. It was okay, if I run out of material I might go back, but there's a lot more things already in my stack to read. Not scary as in Stephen King scary, no nightmares resulted reading it!

I have also been on a Jo Nesbo "binge" recently and I have really enjoyed the Harry Hole series. Must get my hands on a copy of "The Leopard". Here's hoping that the series is set to continue!!!

I read Nemesis a while ago and loved it. I just got The Redbreast and The Devil's Star audiobooks from the library. I'm first on the list for The Snowman. Don't know if the library will get The Leopard. Does anyone know if The Bat Man, The Cockroaches, and The Redeemer will be available in the US anytime soon?

Carol - well, so far there is some sex, but it's so obscure in my mind as to be sort of negligible. I guess it sort of depends how old your grandson is; if he's a teenager, I think it might be ok. I've quite enjoyed so far and I've got the Toyminator on my shelf to read as well

I really like River of Darkness so I have picked up The Dead of Winterat the library but haven't started it yet. Will let you know if it measures up to the first book. I surely hope so.

Elli | 228 comments Finished Dragon Chica and am now starting The Commodore by Patrick O'Brian.

message 2282: by [deleted user] (new)

Well I finished The God of the Hive. It was a little over the top... the evil villain was truly evil and there were too many red herrings and too much going on. It was good fun in any case and I will of course read the next one.

message 2283: by Martina (new)

Martina Just finished reading the e-galley of The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Absolutely fantastic! The tension was so great at the end I thought my head would explode. I had to go outside and work in the yard for a while before reading the epilogue! Haven't read something so good in a while.

message 2284: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments Put Patrick O'Brian's The Commodore back in the library; will get it out later. I'm just not in the mood for that just right now. Two of Alan Furst's novels are ready and I am very much in the mood for that plus the latest Coterrill mystery.

message 2285: by Susan (new)

Alethea Thomas (aletheathomas) | 1 comments I've started the Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris. I liked the Sookie Stackhouse books and I decided to listen (book on MP3) to some of Harris' other material to fill the void until the next book comes out. Last week completed book 1: Real Murders and on 4/28 completed book 2: A Bone to Pick. Listening to the 3rd book this week. :D

Finished Prey on Patmos. Loved the setting in the Greek Isles. Decent mystery and interesting detective. This was the third in the series and since I have not read the first 2 I missed a bit of the personal back story.

message 2293: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished Handle with Care - Jodi Picoult. I am about to start The Rapture - Liz Jensen.

message 2294: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) I started my second Giorgio Faletti book Fuori da un evidente destino. It is a very different story than my first Faletti book Io uccido but now that I think about it there is something that comes back also i this book. I wonder if that is the thing he might have in all his books. What I also seem to notice that his books are written in a way that you turn the pages without realizing it, which of course is great!

message 2295: by K.B. (new)

K.B. Hallman (kbhallman) | 302 comments Finished reading The Abbot's Gibbet. I've always enjoyed this series, but I have read it out of order. This is one time when I think I needed to have read the previous book first.

Elli | 228 comments Still on Dark Star going slowly, not because it's a slow plot, but I have too many other necessities to be taken care of, disgustingly enough when you have some great books waiting patiently for your return.

*sigh* I know what you mean, Elli. I haven't been reading much all week because of "real life".
