message 1757: by Sally (new)

Sally | 38 comments The Song Dog by James McClure I'm reading The Song Dog by James McClure. The story takes place in South Africa during the apartheid era. It is difficult to read about the attitudes of white South Africans towards non-whites but this is a very good mystery so far.

message 1758: by Judy (new)

Judy Olson | 148 comments To Cc: my husband is reading Watchlist by Jeffrey Deaver right now. Kind of an inventive book with Deaver starting a story and several other mystery writers each taking a turn to add to it..with Deaver tying it all together. He says its a good read and would recommend it.

message 1759: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished a re-read of A Thief of Time which I enjoyed.

Finally finished Gulliver's Travels, which I enjoyed some of. Too long, really.

And also finished Arthur & George which was strange. Language beautiful, very well written, but the story kind of fizzled out at the end. It's based on a true story, so it wouldn't have the fab ending of a crime thriller, but I was left a little disappointed.

Am now reading The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and I just started Killing Floor.

Gee I used to read Hillerman all of the time. Wonder how I got away from him. I'll have to look for a new one.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 182 comments On February 15th I was 121 pages into Déjà Dead and gushing about how I thought that the author drew pictures with words.

Soon afterward though I hit a slump. I never take this long to read a book. I had a hard time through the middle.

The device of calling a friend to have him explain the psychology of serial killers, which it turns out, are never predictable, seemed forced and text bookish. And I felt that those clever metaphors and similes had disappeared.

Then things picked up again. I ended up liking the book. This was her First, and I will give her Next a chance. Maybe next time both our bio-rhythms will be in sync.

That is good to know that Dena Dead picks up. I'm bogged down in that book and I have been that way for a while. But if it picks up I will stick with it a while longer.

Dorie I'll be interested to know what you think of Treachery in Death. I only started the series this month, so it's going to take me a loooooong time to make it that far!

Hi Cc - I felt the same way after reading Heartsick, but my thoughts are that they will get better, I have the next 2 books in the series and I need to get them read before deciding to move forward. To me, I just think that you should not give up on a series after the 1st book if you are not feeling it - sometimes it takes to book 2 before the characters get developed. Just my opinion. :)

message 1780: by T (new)

T (twoo) CC & Linda:

I just finished Evil at Heart this morning.....I'd read the first one and missed the second one....Not sure if I will go back to read the 2nd one....There are a ton of other books on my TBR list, so I guess if I do go back for the 2nd one, I'm not feeling any urgency to do so.

message 1781: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished this evening Red Chaser by Jon Spoelstra. I read it last year and rated it 5 stars, but this time if I could rate it more than 5 stars I would. I did not realize what I missed the first time. It was enjoyable to read.

Libby Just finished City of Veils: A Novel by Zoe Ferraris. I wrote a review of it at:

http://boomersandbooks.wordpress.com/...'
Suffice it to say I liked it a lot. It's a fascinating look at women in modern Saudi Arabia, and a good mystery too.

Just started Sleepyhead by Mark Billingham. Very creepy so far. Reminds me of Dalton Trumbo's JOHNNY GOT A GUN.

message 1787: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Just finished reading A Small Murder in Lisbon. Loved it for the blend of current murder and historic involvement with World War II Nazis in Portugal. Author is Robert Wilson.

message 1788: by Almeta (new)

Starting Horns

message 1789: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) I've just finished listening to the audiobook of Dorothy L Sayers' Strong Poison. I read it years ago, but had fogotten how witty and entertaining it is. I'm going to start listening to the the next Peter Wimsey / Harriet Vane book straight away. Classic mysteries (with satire and social commentary thrown in for good measure) are great!

But it is fine Irish noir.

Robyn (robyn302gmailcom) | 5 comments I just finished reading 1st To Die. What an awesome book! It was a roller coaster of emotions. I love books that can make you go from laughing out loud to crying in a chapter. Then I feel invested in the character. Makes me care and I can't wait to read the next one!

Jeane (icegini) I am completely enjoying reading The First Man in Romeand knowing that it is for 1000 pages just adds to the pleasure. Als reading Love Without Resistancein Dutch but it seems to be not really good for the moment. Keeping it for the trip to and from work as it is thin.

Gary Proctor Just finished Dismissed With PrejudiceIt was a little slower to get moving than some of her previous books in the Beaumont series, but once it did, it was quick and interesting and overall well worth reading.
