I've just finished Ragtime in Simla by Barbara Cleverly which was interesting, not great, but still entertaining. I should finish The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin tonight and I've quite enjoyed it.

Next two books on my list to read will be a reread - On the Beach by Nevil Shute, one of my favourite books and Poisoned Chocolates Case by Anthony Berkeley, who is a new author for me. It looks like it might be interesting.

I recently finished A Farewell to Arms, and was not impressed. It was a great short story about the war that had been padded out with sophmoric junk about his relationship with a nurse. Painful. Will have to try some of those articles and dispatches. Thanks, Liam

Hayes, I felt similarly about "The Sun Also Rises". Although well-written, I just couldn't identify with the spoiled aimless life of the characters.

I just finished . It was okay but I expected a bit more from a Jeffery Deaver book. The twists were good but it wasn't as good as some of his others.

I agree about Roadside Crosses - I liked how it started out but was not amused with the ending. Same with his Burning Wire. I might hold off with his latest, Edge, until it comes out in paperback...

I used to be a huge Deaver fan but I stopped reading him with "The Sleeping Doll". Got so over the top and ridiculous I couldn't finish the book. Haven't read another since.

I've read both. Baldacci is always good fun and this is one of the better. Coma is the only Cook i've read but i really liked it. Go with the author that you're least familiar.

I heard good things about Farewell to arms, and that it was prohibited in italy. At least I think it was that book.

Poisoned Chocolate Case by Anthony Berkely shows up on quite a few lists of classic golden age mysteries. I read it in an omnibus of short stories from that time period. You will like it!!!!

I agree Cyn. Rendell seems to be able to "channel" the way a stalker/serial killer might think.

Pamela, I just finished the last book in the series (to date) - Evil at Heart - and I'll be interested in hearing what you think about it compared to the first two. I'm ambivalent about it, but I still love the series.

Just finished Elegy for April by Benjamin Black. Actually, I listened to it. It really enjoyed it. The fact that Timothy Dalton narrated didn't hurt matters...

I'm now listening to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson. Great book so far, but not as good as The Girl Who Played with Fire.

Benjamin Black (aka John Banville) is a terrific writer. "Christene Falls", "The Silver Swan" and "Elegy For April" are all very good books.

Laura I've recently read the first Jack Reacher book - Killing Floor - and once I got into it I couldn't put it down. I've now decided to read them all eventually and in order. Happy reading
