On another thread I'm in, Gone Girl's ending was pretty seriously savaged. Contrived was the consensus. Let us know your impression.

Oh, thank goodness. I thought it was just me about Sookie. I have read the two stand-alones too. Was 'Sweet and Deadly' the one that started with the body in the shack at the edge of the old cotton field? I seem to recall that wasn't my favorite either. So it makes a bit o' sense that it was her first novel.

I really keep wishing she'd give us more Harper. I'll be looking forward to your books! Write on, Anne, write on.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Has just finished Bad Blood: A Vampire Thriller - J.R. Rain Was a great book by 3 different authors who I have never read before. Will definitely keep an eye out for the next in the series if they do any more. Now I am going to read Devil's Waltz - Jonathan Kellerman which I need to read to get the series read to catch up with the publishers lol.

Yes, "Sweet and Deadly" was the one that started off with the body in the shack! It's also the only book of hers that I've read that was written in third person rather than first--I think making the switch to first person helped her storytelling.

I agree--more Harper, please! And thanks! I will definitely keep you posted once I get ready to publish my Harper-esque paranormal series :) I have my first novel, "Murder At Castle Rock" being released at the end of this month in paperback (ebook to follow in May or June, depending on the formatting turnaround time of my publisher). It doesn't have a paranormal angle, but I enjoyed writing it because I love live music and set it in a concert venue. Hopefully people will enjoy it!

Great, exciting book

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Just finished The Spy Who Came in from the Cold . A small gem, the epitome of what an espionage novel can be, and remarkably modern in its sensibilities.

I know, they are so enjoyable that you can zoom through them, then it's finished and you're waiting again!

message 9513: by Bill (new)

Bill Chingyee - Start with his first maybe that will set the mood for le Carre's style. He did grow and develop his style over time, but his earlier books were very good; Call for the Dead, A Murder of Quality, The Spy Who Came In from the Cold.

I'm currently reading a Lily Bard mystery, Shakespeare's Trollop by Charlaine Harris and Stamboul Train: an Entertainment by Graham Greene. Enjoying both so far.

Though I do love the tv show, I think the books are much better, also. I love the whole series and can never wait for the next one to come out. It would be hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to it would be Ice Cold. Spooky!

Priya (priyavasudevan) | 25 comments I've just finished reading Deadheads Deadheads (Dalziel & Pascoe, #7) by Reginald Hill , Lasting Damage (Spilling CID, #6) by Sophie Hannah The Vows of Silence (Simon Serailler, #4) by Susan Hill and Murder in the Park (Ellie Quicke, #9) by Veronica Heley . I enjoyed all of them, but Sophie Hannah's style of layered suspense and Ellie Quicke's inner life and inspired detecting were really my favourites.

Right now I am reading "Nemesis" and luckily so far I enjoy it.

Marc Leroux | 2 comments I just finished listening to Needles by William Deverell. He is an author that was recommended to me some time back, but hadn't gotten around to. Needles is his first book, and it was great. Highly recommended. The bonus was that the people doing the reading did a first class job, which really made it enjoyable to listen to.

STIFF has been sitting on my shelf since Goodreads still had a book exchange! That toe-tag just staring at me saying: "Read me. Read me not. Read me...."

How'd you like it?

message 9536: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (autumnmemory80) | 374 comments Oh. My. Goodness! I Loved this book. It really makes you think about what you want to do in the end. I think I want to donate my body to science now. What I liked about the book is that it is very funny but respectful at the same time. It is just amazing to read about what all cadavers have done throughout history. I would highly recommend this book!

Interested to see what you think of this one. Once upon a time Cornwall was one of my favorites. I quit reading her about three books ago but some reviewers are saying this books is more like her older books.

P.J. Morse (pj_morse) | 10 comments I finished "Maui Widow Waltz" by JoAnn Bassett. I saw that it was free, and I wasn't sure what to expect, beyond the fact that it was set in Hawaii. At first, I was worried the protagonist might be too much of a girly-girl (she's a wedding planner), but she was tough and funny. Oh, and the Maui setting doesn't hurt, either. I enjoyed learning more about the culture and the tensions between the visitors and the locals.

Joanne | 19 comments I finished listening to The Boy in the Snow by M.J. McGrath and would definitely recommend it! This is the second Edie Kiglatuk mystery, the first being White Heat (Edie Kiglatuk Mystery, #1) by M.J. McGrath , which I also enjoyed. In this one Edie is in Alaska for the Iditarod when she finds the body of an infant boy frozen in the snow. A local religious group is suspect, but Edie finds that some prominent people may actually be involved. Lots of twists and turns!

might I disagree? It is not really the end, she just reinvents her series into a new light. Many authors get stalled in their series and get burned out. I think Slaughter took her two separate series and wove them into a new powerful series.

message 9550: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) [book:Sworn to Silence|6115138 just finished this one, been highly recommended for a long time, don't know why I kept putting off reading it. It is more violent , like Karin Slaughter series, but a very strong debut to what I hope is a great series
