I would recommend you read them in order because events take place that have a knock on effect in later books especially from the Grant County series into the Will Trent series.

Jannene | 775 comments I just finished Blood Orchid (Holly Barker #3) by Stuart Woods and it was another great read. I really like Holly but I wish Ham had a bigger role in this book. Now I'm trying to figure out if I should read Reckless Abandon (Stone Barrington, #10 Holly Barker #4) by Stuart Woods the next in the series or read Moscow Rules (Gabriel Allon, #8) by Daniel Silva and see what Gabriel is up to. Hmmm

Elli | 228 comments Just started The Birth House by Ami McKay, and it's good! Set in Nova Scotia late 1800's, but talks the full tradition of this bunch of marooned immigrants from their history and adaptations.

JB Rowley (jbrowley) I've just finished Upfield's The Mystery of Swordfish Reef. Another good read. Interesting history and geography of the Bermagui area. Good narration by Peter Hosking.

Mark Edwards (markedwardswriter) | 6 comments I just finished Dead Man's Footsteps by Peter James - I'm working my way through the Roy Grace series having come to it late. Actually, 'working' is not the right word because reading his books is sheer pleasure.

In this one, a crooked businessman pretends to have died in 9/11 so he can wipe his debts and start again. Then years later, the body of a young woman turns up... The book moves between New York, the UK and Australia and has a great cast of characters. To me, the real strengths of Peter's books are the plotting and the supporting characters. In fact, the lead character is in this for probably less than half of it but it all works really well. Gripping stuff and great fun.

Well, don't tell me how it ends. I've gotten so that I don't even read reviews anymore - they are always giving things away.

I can relate. I don't even read the official blurbs about novels that appear on websites (like Goodreads, Amazon, etc.), dust jackets, on the back covers, etc. They often give away too much about the plot. I hate spoilers and prefer to know nothing about a novel before reading it.

It makes it kind of tricky to decide whether I'm going to like a novel before reading it, but I just go with my gut instincts. Covers, authors, recommendations (just not detailed recommendations), "Top X" lists, a hint about the theme of the novel -- things like that help me build my "to be read" lists. I rarely pick a novel that I end up hating, despite my slightly unorthodox methods for choosing them.

I'm a BIG fan :)
But I read the Will Trent series in order first not knowing about the Grant series being earlier and related... then I read the Grant books.
While I am a huge fan I think I prefered the Will Trent books and it did suit me better to have read them first. I found the early 'Grant' books less 'gritty' and I like gritty. But being adicted to the characters by then I kept going, when I might not have.

Enjoy, I love them!!

It sometimes takes me a little while to get into his books. I'm reading Broken Skin.

Just finished She Died a Lady by Carter Dickson a/k/a John Dickson Carr. I think I was 15% in when I picked it up yesterday. Had been having trouble getting into it. But I found I couldn't put it down until I finished it last night.

Ken Consaul | 209 comments Just finished Unknown Man #89 by Elmore Leonard , one of his earlier ventures into crime fiction.

I enjoy Elmore Leonard mostly for the pace and the dialog. It seems to me his characters could be picked up and set down in almost any story. Not bored yet.

message 8587: by Bill (new)

Bill I finished In the Presence of Mine Enemies by Harry Turtledove and it was interesting, not great, but still a good read. I'm about 1/3 of the way through The Perfect Husband by Lisa Gardnerand enjoying. It's nicely paced and there is suitable tension. I'm just starting a Scandanavian Crime story; Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten.

message 8588: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments I just finished Moscow Rules (Gabriel Allon, #8) by Daniel Silva . It was a good book. I think I need to just realize that Gabriel is always going to be beaten to a pulp and then have to come back from it all like he's superman...only older. It seemed too long, some parts seemed really unnecessary and could have been cut out. It was a little slower pace than the normal books.

Georgia | 554 comments I read The Winner by David Baldacci 11 years ago. I liked it then and sticks in my mind. The last book I read was a classic The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway because I like to have a change of pace once in awhile.
It was OK. The life style was somewhat boring, but the symbolism of this book has a lot to say. Never was a Hemingway fan however, so it's back to mysteries and espionage as I just went into my bag of books and found
Vince Flynn's Protect And Defend by Vince Flynn Love
Mitch Rapp, Jack Reacher, etc.

Jeanie (birdyseeds) | 382 comments Someone said earlier that they're tired of mysteries featuring PI's. For me it depends completely on the talent of the authors. Personally, I cant get enough of the snarky Elvis Cole and John Corey as well as Patrick Kenzie in his funnier moments. (grin)
