Rusty (rustyshackleford) | 2198 comments Will the Hillary supporters really vote for McCain in the general election?

message 52: by Rowena (new)

Rowena (rowenacherry) Hi, Donna,

Sorry for any confusion. I misspoke. When I said "individual" I probably should have said "independent".

Grin.

message 53: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Cafaro (stephencafaro) Would it not be interesting if Hillary pulled out of the Democratic party and decided to run as an Independedent in the general election?

message 54: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) This Hillary supporter ain't votin' for McCain. Hells no.

message 55: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) If Hillary runs as an independent, she'll seal the deal for McCain to be our next pres. That would be a very stupid move on her part, and I highly doubt she'd do that.

message 56: by Carlie (last edited Jun 03, 2008 08:38AM) (new)

Carlie Only stupid voters would vote Mccain if Hill lost. I mean really, doesn't that just define someone who votes not on the issues but on some idiotic bs like race or height? McCain is much more anti what Hill stands for than Obama. All those idiots wanted to vote for hill for some other reason than what she stands for if they're gonna jump ship if a mixed race man wins the primary.
They're basically saying "since I didn't get the candidate I wanted, I'll just screw up the whole damn country out of spite"

message 57: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I worried my mom might be a Hill-or-McCain type. But even though she doesn't follow politics (I, on the other hand, have always wanted to start a fantasy politics league, I just haven't figured out the stats yet), she's well aware that McPolitician had no problem giving up being an independent, aisle-crossing maverick when he realized it didn't pay. These days, he's the party underwear, pinned to the clothesline and swaying in the republican wind, and even my uninformed mom has picked up on that.

(The really dumb might think that Hill and McRepublican are both moderates so must share some similarities...)

Now I just have to check with dad, who's even less informed than mom. Anybody got some McCain-hates-alternative-energy quote? (He doesn't have to hate alternative energy, it's just the one lefty issue my dad feels strongly about, thanks to the family farm he owns a sixth of growing corn, soy, and wind.)

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

Hit me up with some suggestions on your fantasy politicians league, Lisa. We could use stats like Bills Sponsored, Votes Cast, Votes Missed, Obnoxious and Completely Out of Touch Statements, etc...

message 59: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) Count me in on the fantasy politicians league. It's a great idea that scratches that itch for complete surrender to my nerdishness. Yes, I said nerdishness. You could add in a category for errors too: Accidental Death of an Intern, Harassment of Underage Pages, Sexual Liaison With Call Girl/Transvestite/Automobile/Adopted Daughter (whoops, that one's more for Woody Allen), Storing Bribes in Freezer, etc.

Lisa, I'll go do some looking for McCain-Alt Energy quotes. I know that he recently refused to vote on a bill put together by his own allies because there weren't strong enough subsidies for nuclear power, and that he had previously been a strong proponent of so-called clean coal.

message 60: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Cafaro (stephencafaro) At last we have a winner in the Demo contest, but Hillary has not yet lost. I wonder what the Clintons have up their sleeve!

message 61: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill Good luck with your search Lisa, but I doubt you're going to find much to hate on McCain with in terms of alt energy. Check on this....that bill that McCain refused to vote for...I believe Obama voted in favor.

So....noone can think of even one reason why a Hillary supporter would vote for McCain? I got a few...

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, NB, name 'em. I'm curious to know what the reasons are.

message 63: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill 1. Many feel that Hillary was thrown under the bus by a "good ol' boy" media. Ditto the DNC. Obama's "sweety" remark just reinforces that. ...this is by far the biggest reason.

2. Obama has not sponsored any significant legislation to date that has been passed so they're questioning his effectiveness.

3. Some feel Obama has not come clean about his relationships with certain individuals (Wright, Ayers...etc)

...whether you agree or not, this is what they're saying. Some are even mad enough to volunteer for McCain. Whether there's a real ground swell for that or just a few venting sour grapes is yet to be seen. Some polls show as much as 25% of Hill supporters saying they'll vote McCain, but November is a long way off.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll agree with items #1 & 2, but both Hillary and Bill have never come clean about any of their past relationships, either.

For a Clinton supporter to vote for McCain, they need to ask themselves these questions:
- Are they a supporter of the DNC's agenda, or just a supporter of Hillary Clinton?
- Is John McCain a better answer in their eyes than Barack Obama?

message 65: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Gus and Logan, I love your ideas! Now if only we could get Yahoo to compile the stats for us like they do for fantasy sports...

message 66: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill There's also something else at work regarding how peeps are gonna vote. Within both the Dems and Reps, there is a lot of anger aimed at the parent political organizations regarding the nominee that have ended up representing the paries. The Reps are affected more by this, but on both sides, people are going to either stay home or vote the other candidate for no other reason than communicating their disastisfaction.

message 67: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) NB, you really think that enough Dems are pissed that Obama is the nominee that they're going to cross the aisle and vote for Bush Lite? I just don't see it happening. Sure, tensions are high now- but we have 152 days until the election. There are going to be a lot more ups and downs before then. I don't see Hillary supporters defecting en masse to allow another 4 years of the fuck-ups that we've endured.

message 68: by Not Bill (last edited Jun 04, 2008 02:51PM) (new)

Not Bill I never said anything about "en masse" or "enough". Though I did give a poll result, I dd not attach any significance to it...I merely pointed it out.

Here's more - from the DNC Rules Committee meeting:

Jackie "the Librarian" Record numbers of people, especially young voters, turned out to vote in the Democratic primaries and caucuses this year. They can't WAIT for this administration to leave.

I don't think all those enthusiastic voters are going to turn into Republicans now.

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

Agreeing with NB here. This is only a small minority of Hillary supporters that may defect to John McCain. My wife is a strong Hillary Clinton supporter - this having caused some minor strife in our household, as I've supported Obama for quite a while - and while she's disappointed that Hillary will not win the DNC's nomination, she will vote for Obama before voting for McCain. And I concur that the majority of Clinton's supporters will show party loyalty and endorse Obama. He'll have an easier time getting the Hillary endorsees to see his way than McCain would.

message 71: by Emma (last edited Jun 05, 2008 12:55PM) (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) And Hilary will be shunned if she doesn't get out there and convince those who will go for Mcain, to vote for him.

message 72: by Carlie (new)

Carlie I dont think she can do that. Those people are real bitter and wanna take it out on someone.
