When they cast Jennifer Lawrence & I watched her clips from Winter Bone it gave me much hope. And once I had hope I was excited.

And it's so fun to be excited about a movie and to be experiencing fandom. It's feeling the Harry Potter shaped void somewhat.

Well it's not so much the book void, as the fandom void. I just remember all the excitement, anticipation, midnight parties. When people are just now reading Harry Potter I'm glad but I'm also sad, because they missed so much of the experience.

Hunger Games, while not on the level of HP, still has some fandom excitement thats enjoyable.

The Harry Potter void is a big one to fill indeed, and I reckon no book/series truly will, but The Hunger Games series is doing a great job at the moment! Reading the books really got me back to that feeling of wanting to stay up to 4AM to finish them, which I haven't had since Deathly Hallows.

I told Gary, ‘I totally understand if you don’t hire me, but please remember that after Katniss shoots a bow and kills someone her face cannot be badass. It has to be broken.’ She has to be heartbroken because she just took another person’s life. It’s so tempting, especially with a cool, big budget franchise movie, but we have to remember that she’s a 16-year-old girl who’s being forced to do this. These kids are only killing each other because if they don’t, they’ll die. It’s needless, pointless, unjustified violence. So there’s nothing cool about her. I haven't seen Lenny act but I think the casting might actually be a good thing - he kind of has a feminine streak in him and I am crossing my fingers that he can act. :) I would have never thought of him but I am not upset with it.

I'm surprised but I honestly think he'll do a great job. I always read Cinna as someone who is understated and observant but also kind of strangely attractive and oozes sexual ambiguity.(definite sexual tension between him and Katniss, no? Just me then! Haha)
The only problem I had with him is that I think he may be a little old. I had him at around early thirties... but Kravitz is 46.
How old did everyone else place Cinna?

I'm excited to see what he does with the role... worst case scenario, Lenny Kravitz sure could pull off gold eyeliner!

I'm not bothered by it but apparently I am hard to bother.

When they kept delaying the Cinna casting announcement I worried his role would be cut down (or in my worst nightmares cut out). The fact they've casted Lenny Kriavitz makes me think that they're keeping Cinna as a large part to justify using such a big name.

I never saw Precious and I'm not bothered by looks. He is older than I pictured Cinna but hollywood 40s is often like everyone elses mid-twenties or we're lucky enough to be remotely good looking.

I thought Cinna was mid to late twenties, at the most early thirties in the book. I'm not bothered by Kravitz's age. Makeup can do amazing things these days. And I felt there was a little sexual tension bordering on a not-quite brother/sister relationship between Katniss and Cinna, so no Jo, it isn't just you. I actually had a secret hope that Cinna would break up the triangle, but sadly it never went that direction.

Becca - you were not alone in your secret hope for Katniss and Cinna! I remember reading and thinking, oh that could be an interesting move but sadly it was not to be.
I think Kravitz is going to be amazing as Cinna, I never really get hung up on the age thing. I said the same thing when Lawrence was cast, I want a strong actor who may look a little older as opposed to an actor who looks the age but can't act.

I reckon Lenny might do a good job. I have never been too much of a fan of his music, but that doesn't really have anything to do with the film, haha. I saw him in Precious and he did quite a good job, I'll be excited to see if he pulls of Cinna! (Which he better because I love Cinna to bits and ruining his character would ruin a lot)

Cinna's death absolutely broke my heart. For being a secondary character, he was my favorite of the whole she-bang, and I know a few people who feel the same - shout out to Brittany who is currently surrounded by text books instead of novels.

I loved Cinna too, and I just kept hoping and hoping that he wasn't actually dead.

I found out this morning about Kravitz, and while he's not at all what I pictured I also think that he's an excellent choice in terms of aura and personality ambiance. I was really excited. For me personally, I get more and more excited with each casting selection.

I didn't like Precious at all. His acting neither impressed nor turned me off. I'm very neutral about his acting ability. He almost seems too cut to be Cinna, who I pictured as slight of frame.

This choice bothers me because of the possible interpretation of sexual tension between Katniss and Cinna in the books. I too had my moments where I dared to hope for a Katniss/Cinna pairing.

There's no way a man in his 40's will end up having any scenes with sexual tension with a 16 year old girl. I always assumed Cinna to be in his late 20's and the line to be sort of blurry. Was he gay? Bi? Straight but Metrosexual? Who knows...but the bond that he had with Katniss went beyond just a simple friend. He was in a way her confidant, a man who understood things about her that no one else did.

The age thing bothers me the most. The race isn't as big of an issue I guess, even though the looks aren't how I imagined at all.

Hmmmm, interesting. I'm not as invested as most people, but so far I am happy with the casting. My only hope is that they don't pull a Percy Jackson on us. I'm glad to see black people being cast, even though Lenny K is an odd pick.

Has anyone seen the 5th Element. I forgot his name but Chris Tucker played a quirky character. Maybe LK can pull it off?

I didn't get any tension between Katniss and Cinna, I got more of a besties/take her under my fabulous wing feeling. But that's just me.

I always say her as having maybe the hint of a crush, but the feelings coming from Cinna were always brotherly, take-under-wing feelings.

And I never pictured Cinna as black, but I there's just something about the Persona that I think Kravitz fits, and I personally find him incredibly attractive, in that Reggae rock Star way. I think he'll hit it.

Woah, I never wondered anything about his sexual orientations or sexual vibe with Katniss. xD What I love about their relationship is just that they are very open to one another and caring in a sort of distant way (it's not like they could go to the movies together). They understand each other without speaking most of the time and I kind of pictured him as a father figure rather than a potential mate.

Peep, about the casting of black people. I fully agree on the principle. But there aren't just white and black people on earth, and I don't think there are just white and black people in Panem either. If they really wanted to play the multicultural card, they could also haven chosen an asian guy or a latino. Black people aren't the only ones who suffered discrimination and such, and should not be the only ones we think about when we hear "multicultural".

And Kravitz is such a big name...

When I said that there was sexual tension between Cinna and Katniss, I think it was just wishful thinking that they would get together because, come on... between Peeta and Gale (as much as I love them both), a life with Cinna would be a lot funner, safer, more fabulous and would include more sparkly things.

There wasn't any sexual vibe between Katniss and Cinna either. It wasn't a vibe I got between Cinna and anyone. It was a vibe that I got JUST from Cinna... Just... I suppose my own character meter. Just like when Rowling stated taht Dumbledore was 'Gay', I wasn't surprised. Yet, there wasn't anything specific between him and anyone. It was just a way he handled himself. I guess it's hard to explain.

As far as the multicultural thing, there are plenty of different cultures shown in the tributes. So I think they have it covered.

Mmh, I expressed myself badly. I still don't know how to explain actually *frustrated* but, my point is, the movie isn't as multicultural as they'd like it to be, in my opinion. The tributes, we're gonna see them one minute or two. People won't focus on them, and maybe even barely notice them.

I definitely pictured Cinna as black. I believe there's a point in the book where Katniss is describing Cinna and she mentions his dark skin. I'll see if I can find it.
