yeah, they're so pretty!! hahaha the one I'm talking about is this one:

And real quick to the thing about the Bible: haha I wasn't trying to be mean or anything, but I just saw that somewhere and was like, "uhhh the Bible? That's like Christianity 101" hahaha how could it not be applicable? That's like...weird. I don't know, never mind!

Yes, i go to a Catholic, co-ed private school.
And no, my maths teacher is definitely not a nun.
We dont have any teachers that are nuns at our school. A few teachers a Priests, but i can only think of 2.

well that's still not good that they're cussing at you! Here in the states, that's grounds for a lawsuit :) And my aunt is on the board of a school district in Kentucky that fired a coach for cussing at the boys. Teachers should take their jobs seriously! It's a priviledge to teach!!
I just wanna get on a plane, go over to your school, and give your teacher a piece of my mind! And tell it to stop cussing at kids at a private, CATHOLIC school!! >:o

Amelia, we need more people wanting to be teachers with that attitude!
Oh man, Amber, your teachers sound more like substitute teachers!! (except me, cuz I take my job seriously and I have always hated slacker subs)Sounds like those teachers should find a new job. When teachers get to the point they don't love to teach, they need to move on because unfortunately, its just damaging to their students.

this may be mean, but since it's ISS...I'm not really surprised!
I DO think that teachers should be paid better...maybe one of the reasons teachers get burned out is because they feel underappreciated. Let's face it, kids (especially high schoolers) arent always very kind to teachers, either, and their jobs are not easy. But hey, that's no excuse for teachers to be rude! They're the grownups and they should set an example!
That's a lawsuit waiting to happen!I never really understood why teachers don't make more money than doctors and lawyers and the like. Without teachers, there would be no doctors and lawyers in the like...so to me, they should have the highest paying jobs (and I'm not just saying that because I am a teacher :-p haha)
I totally agree with Amelia's comment about kids being mean too teachers.
Last year in out maths class, i have a feeling out teacher left the school coz of us.
Me and my friends were like the only people who behaved in class.
Our maths class last year (year 8) was very badly behaved.
Not only would the answer back/pay out the teacher, but they tried to lock the teacher out, talked whilst she spoke, didnt listen AT ALL!!!!
It was shocking!
Anyway, id still love to be a teacher. English, Humanities,Religion,Tech,Drama. Preferably at a grade 7 level

Well of course kids are mean to teachers, but teachers need to take control of their students. When teachers let their students push them around, that's when things get nasty (the students being really mean). I know some people have a hard time being firm (there are a few teachers at my school who let those 3 and 4 year olds walk all over them because they won't raise their voice) but in this profession, you definitely have to.I would have whipped that class into shape...though I'm sure those kids would have feared me for a few weeks :-) haha
It's a delicate balance between mean teacher and let-the-students-walk-all-over-them teacher.I can't necessarily speak from the point of view of a teacher, but at my church, I teach the fourth-grade girls, and I tend to be the one who lets them walk on me. But my friend teaches with me, and we tend to be good-cop, bad-cop. :)
Well you don't have to be mean to be get the kids to respect you. But you do have to be firm with them when they're out of line or being disrespectful. There is a teacher at my school who talks all, what I call pixie dust-ish (you know, she talks all high and pretty and airy), when the kids are misbehaving and they completely ignore her. Some teachers fear the if they raise their voice, the kids won't like them. Well, I can tell you this, I raise my voice when it needs to be raised and there are tons of kids at my school who get excited to see me.
But being mean like Booklover's teacher is unacceptable. Being mean for the sake of being mean and making sure the kids listen to you, of course, is just as bad as letting the kids walk all over you. In my opinion, a successful class is one that is built on mutual respect between the teacher and the students. But that lady is just plain disrespectful.
I agree. With everything you said. :)I think that the being mean being just as bad as letting yourself be walked on could be applied to other things as well, not just teachers.
(Wow, that was horrible grammar. Sorry...you know what I mean, don't you? :)
The top 5 teachers at my school, are all teachers that have students respect, but are awesome fun, whilst doing work.
I think to be a good teacher, you need to be firm with your student, but be 'unusal' and 'weird'.
Fr example, one of my favorite teachers, a drama teacher was teaching us how to become a character, and for the whole lesson he spoke like a Russian Nuclear Physicist named Vladmir Petonski. We had to ask him questions, and he answer them on the spot in character.
It worked, we learnt a lot about character development that lesson.
Our science teacher last year, came in with a leather jacket, some 'bling' and sun glasses, and started rapping about science terms.
Then we had to get into groups and write a rap about chemicals. It worked, and we all got full marks on our tests, whilst other classes who studied text-book, did not.
Our maths teacher in year 6, never opened the text book.
Maybe three times we worked from the book all year in maths. Other times, we would perform plays with 5 maths rules in them, she would play maths games with us,work from sheets sometimes. Her style of teacher worked!
We also had her in year 4, and she taught me what a hexagon is.
HEX sounds like SEX which sounds like SIX. Six sides.
What a champion she was. BEST TEACHER EVER! Also, she was a South Australia former actress who preformed on Broadway a few times. So really, she was very out going, and out-there!
In my opinion, bad teachers are teacher who dont have a students attention.
If i was a teacher, there would be minimal text book work, because quite frankly, we have learnt more from teacher who dont use text book, then those who do.

I wouldn't call that weird or unusual, I'd call that making learning fun. And that's what all good teachers should aim for. But, bare in mind, not all students can learn that way either. Some of them prefer the textbook way. A good teacher teaches to their students abilities and styles.
I had a set of history lectures on DVD where the teacher dressed up as a character, and spoke in character, still delivering the information. And I loved my fourth grade teacher, who among other things, had a great big paper dragon on the wall to remind us of the parts of a story (the fire was "voice" and so on). And he read us The Hobbit...
yes. But if you were in their clases, they were weird.
Today our drama teacher randomly started screaming to get our attention :D
He is aweosme!
And another definition of good teacher, is making a bad subject fun! Like science last year, and maths in year 6.
I *actually* would say: YES! MATHS! or YES! SCIENCE NEXT!
Now that, is an achievement to the teacher.

My bio teacher last year was awesome. On his FAQ sheet at the beginning of the year was "Can I wear a kilt to class?" His answer "Is that fad over? I hope it's over."So, a couple weeks into the year, a guy seriously wore a kilt. And my teacher walks by and simply comments "Nice legs" and starts teaching. At a very conservative school (well, okay, it's a church where they hold homeschool classes. Close enough). It was hilarious.
lol
i love great teachers!
And just for the record, best teachers ON THE PLANET:
Mr. Kelly-drama
Mr.Head-Science
Mrs. O'Grady-Maths/english/hums/Re

Those teachers are usually the teachers who really love the subjects they teach! Which makes them good at it!I also find most teachers teach the way they were taught, which is why a lot of older teachers are straight from the text book, lecture, and boring blah blah blah. That's the way school has been for a while and its hard to break those habits. We used to have discussions like this all the time in my college ed classes.
That's why when we get great teachers, I think it's important to always appreciate them and never take them for granted!
Indeed!
I would make a *great* teacher i think...
1)ADORE your subject
2) Respect your students. Treat them like your one of their good friends. All our good teachers did this.
3)have a sense of humor. Nothing is worse then a teacher who drones on and on
4) Try to not use text books ever lesson. Get them on their feet, doing practical activities.
That is a list that all my favorite teachers tick.
Its what i would do.
The best way to learn, is to be having so much fun you dont realize your learning at all...
NOW THIS WILL SPARK DEBATE. IM SURE OF IT! People will comment disagreeing. But this is my opinion.

I think this could be its own separate topic, there's so much to say.In the class that I am currently in, we use the Socratic method. In a nutshell, it means that the teacher (or tutor, as my program calls them) asks questions intended to spark discussion. And then we discuss. The tutor never gives us any actual answers, and we debate among ourselves. Twice a week, for an hour and a half. Oh, yes, and we write.
I love the program, though it wouldn't work for say...math :)
my maths teacher now is just so bad.
She understands herself, but she dosent know how to explain it to us.
BTW its like 1 minute to eleven. Id better go to bed and get some serious reading in!
Good Night every one!

It's 5:30 AM. Joy. When did that happen?Class in a few hours. No sleep + debate = unhappy me.
I'm going to be dead today...oh well...
I'm really surprised at your school, Jess! It sounds so bad! My cousin Julia went to a Catholic school in New Jersey, and like if kids didnt behave, they were just kicked out. They had a huge waiting list, so they didnt need to put up with ill-behaved kids. And besides, if you're a parent who's paying for private school, you want your kids to have a better experience than if it was public. Now some public schools are amazing - my cousin goes to a public school in the Dallas area and it pretty much functions like a private school: small class sizes, better-behaved kids (generalized statement, of course) but I'm shocked at how cool that school district is. I went to a non-denominational private school, and we were just 1 of several private schools in the Greater San Diego area, so there wasn't much of a...need to keep kids. I mean, you knew going in that if you didnt behave, you ran the risk of expulsion. But my is probably unique. And there were problems at my school, too, and we had some problems with teachers but not anything like cussing at kids! OMG! But on the other hand, my classmates would never even think of taunting teachers or locking them out of the room - because our school just wouldnt put up with it. There was a kid who was like a high schooler when I was in 8th grade or whatever who wrote "Mr. so-and-so is a fascist" on somebody's wall on facebook. Well, the principal saw it, reported it to the board, and that kid was put on probation and kicked off the basketball team. The next year, he cheated on a paper, and so that was 2 strikes and he was out. My school was ruthless, haha! But a teacher got fired my freshman year of college for pretty much making "inappropriate" comments to her students... which is so stupid for teachers to do - I mean, seriously, they're TEENS! they're going to blab it all over the place if you say something bad! But that was the first time in like 20 years that a teacher had been fired from our school and it was a BIG deal.

Well our class sizes are about: 23-24
And some teachers are pretty bad, but there are other teachers who are absolutely amazing!
But there are only 5-6 teachers i can think of, that ive EVER had who were spectacular.

Oh, Ameila, there is a school exactly like the ones your cousins went to here in Adelaide.
If students misbehave/dont get high grades they are kicked out!
Now i think thats a bit rude, that if a student isn't doing well academically they are asked to leave.
Im pretty sure Regan would have a good idea of what school i mean...

Finished Skinned and Chasing Brooklyn...My class has about somewhere between ten and fifteen students.
I've had a few amazing teachers. Mostly from elementary school.

Well to my knowledge Julia's school didnt do that. It was a good academic school, but academics isnt what makes it noteworthy - a good school with a "*real* Catholic character" is (their motto is something like that)
At my school, you just had to be passing...but behavior was definitely more of an emphasis other than academics. Wow, that sounds bad, haha. It's not like my school didnt care about academics, but if you're doing poorly or whatever, they won't kick you out. They only talk about expulsion for behavioral problems.
There have been 3 kids in my year level expelled for behavior problems.
But the most well known school in Adelaide asks you to leave if your not doing so well. Thats why their year 12 grades, none are lower then 90.
And even though our school IS Catholic, its not very focused on it. For example, our science teacher this year (not as great as last years) is teaching us the theory of evolution, then next lesson, he comes and teacher us Religion, about Creation...

yeah our teachers taught us about evolution, too, just because it is educational to know...but we didnt really feel like "ohhh you have to believe this!" or anything
thats what im thinking too.
In religion, we had to put up our hands if we DO believe in the Bible. And for a Catholic school, there was only 4. Including me.

is it a requirement to be Catholic to attend that school? My cousin started out at a "Catholic" school in Brooklyn where that wasnt a requirement, and she was transferred out, but some schools are like that I guess. Are there a lot of private schools in the Greater Adelaide area?
You dont have to be Catholic to attend, even though its a Private Catholic school.
And yes, there are many.many Private schools in Adelaide

Yes, there are a lot of atheists at our school ( surprise!) but only few who actually believe in the Bible.

That is why in our early history the people of our church have made great sacrifices to buil them and why we make them so beautifully. So thanks again!
And I also agree with Booklover23s list for teachers, I think its great, the Socratic method sounds really great too!
