Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 383 comments I totes read Looking For Alaska today. It was pretty rad! Loved how it didn't dumb anything down and like, made me think for a bit. And the last words thing was awesome. On the flip side, it may be partly because I read it all in one sitting, but by the last third the writing became a bit stale and predicable for me. Just the same little tricks he's already done a few times before in a slightly different setting.

Now I'm reading Run With the Hunted, which is a compilation of biographical (or maybe not, it can be tough to tell) pieces Charles Bukowski wrote. Dat writing. Dat rebelling. Dem "I saw a flower the other day. It was nice," endings.

message 2102: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments I didn't know that he wrote the screenplay, but that makes sense.

I find it very funny that S. Morgenstern doesn't actually exist. Goldman has a bizarre sense of humor.

Oh Baxter, I've been meaning to read that for AGES!

message 2104: by Baxter (new)

Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 383 comments I give it my seal of approval! I really want to go check out some more of this John Green character now.

message 2105: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments I want to read that one, too.

Must be good then Baxter! Im definitely getting my hands on that soon :) I'll let you know what I think.

message 2107: by Mayze (new)

Mayze I love love love love Looking For Alaska! John Green is one of my all-time favorite authors. He makes the books very believable, and even though his books deal with serious topics he manages to weave in humorous moments throughout.

It does make sense.

And it is quite funny. There's all these little blurbs about the 'abridgment' and such and everything like his life and son not liking Morganstern's version and it's actually believable. he had me for a while.

message 2109: by Diana (new)

Diana I'm reading Death Cloud by Andrew Lane at the moment.

message 2110: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments STILL reading Bossypants and Why We Broke Up. I need to work on those today.

message 2111: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments I'm rereading the Princess Diaries series right now.

Mayze Natalie wrote: "STILL reading Bossypants and Why We Broke Up. I need to work on those today."

I really liked Bossypants :) I love Tina Fey, and I thought that the book was hilarious.

message 2113: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments It's really funny, she's great. :)

message 2114: by Mayze (new)

Mayze I made the mistake of reading it right before my bio final...

message 2115: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments ..That's a mistake?

Mayze when you're supposed to be studying, it's a mistake :)

Yeah, he had me too. I really believed it up until I was told differently. Maybe I shouldn't have, but I guess I'm just gullible.

message 2119: by Mayze (new)

Mayze I just started A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

message 2120: by Baxter (new)

Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 383 comments Anna wrote: "I just started A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson"

Oh dang, that book. I love Bill Bryson so much. He makes things that have no business being interesting the coolest things ever.

message 2121: by Mayze (new)

Mayze He is amazing! I read A Walk in the Woods last year and it was hands down the funniest non-fiction book I've ever read.

message 2122: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) Just starting
The Name of the Star

message 2123: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Diaz (literarygetaway) | 23 comments At the moment, I'm reading 'City Of Ashes', the second book in The Mortal Instruments series. And, I remember I read the 1st book in about a day. But, this one was harder to get into. I'm on page...maybe 120ish? And, it JUST started getting my full attention. So, I'm glad I didn't give up on it. :)

message 2124: by natalie (last edited Jul 24, 2011 10:30PM) (new)

natalie | 5047 comments So I'm not done, but you guys should check out Why We Broke Up. It's really good. It has quite a bit cussin, though. Which I don't mind. But, this book is unlike any other I've read before. The main charcter, Min, is differernt than most girl charcters in books, it's refreshing.

EDIT: I know some people *cough* Kate & Jess *cough* don't like romance, but this isn't like Twilight or anything. It's different. So far. No love triangles, again, so far, it's romance, obviously, but it's a letter. And it's different. And I like it. :)

message 2125: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments So you can enjoy it. Love stories just don't interest me. But I must say, I approve of the originality and lack of love triangle.

message 2126: by Mayze (new)

Mayze It sounds interesting! I have about 10 books to read right now, but maybe I'll check it out once I'm done

Seriously, me too. My dad said something about it when we were in the library but I didn't fully believe him. Then I got on here after i was mostly into it and scores of people were saying that he made the whole thing about it being an abridgment up.

Sounds intriguing. I need something different, because all of these fairy/vampire/werewolf/magical books are just piling on each other.

message 2129: by Nafisa (new)

Nafisa Choudhury (nafisalivestowrite) I'm catching up on classics, so write now, when I have the time, I choose between David Copperfield, Persuasion, and Jane Eyre. I have loved Austens most of the time and Persuasion's interesting. David Copperfield was recommended by a teacher. It's okay. And as much as I have tried, Jane Eyre - character and all - seems really good. :)

message 2130: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Jane Eyre one of my favorites!

Just finished Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore and currently reading King Arthur Warrior of the West (King Arthur, #2) by M.K. Hume and Whitechapel Gods by S.M. Peters ( I love the cover of this one )

message 2131: by Mayze (new)

Mayze I love Graceling, it was so action-packed!

message 2132: by Ingrid (last edited Jul 28, 2011 04:45PM) (new)

Ingrid I had mixed feelings with Graceling...
She just seemed too great. I mean, timed sleep, super strength, super fire starting, super hunting, never tiring...

message 2133: by [deleted user] (new)

i got over the I hate all men and will never love anyone thing but the action was good

message 2134: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) That's what made Graceling a little nauseating for me, just the character's attitude. I enjoyed the whole 'politics' of the Seven Kingdoms and the idea of graces.

message 2135: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Exactly. The idea was good, but Katsa's personality and outlook on life...

message 2136: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments Finished Why We Broke Up, now just to finish Bossypants. Then I'm going to read Someone Like You.

message 2137: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Diaz (literarygetaway) | 23 comments The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness
This book is SO good. I'm going into Part III of the book, and I can barely put it down!

message 2138: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments I wanna read that one.

message 2139: by Soumya (new)

Soumya Finished Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell.
About to start bury my heart at wounded knee, don't remember the author

message 2140: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments Graceling was.....different. I liked the book as a whole, but Katsa was pretty much a 'God character'.

message 2141: by Ashley (last edited Jul 28, 2011 09:50PM) (new)

Ashley (smiley_molko) | 65 comments I just finished The Forest of Hands and Teeth. I think I need a couple days to figure out how I feel about it, I'm just too conflicted.

And now I have to choose a new book to read. There are so many!

I loved that book. The rest of the series is probably better though. Its my favorite trilogy of all time, save Chaos Walking. Yep, I think its even better than The Hunger Games. If you continue, you'll ADORE #3

I LOVE THAT BOOK SO MUCH! Its one of my favorite books of all time. Part 2 & 3 are just as good, if not better :)

message 2143: by Nafisa (new)

Nafisa Choudhury (nafisalivestowrite) I just started Vet in a Spin
I really like James Herriot's way of writing. It's very funny :)

Mayze I read Chaos Walking last year (I got the English version of the last book) and I was totally in love with them. Ditto for Harry Potter, although I read them in 1st or 2nd grade.
