Ahhh, I must read those books, I can't believe I haven't already! Unfortunately, every time I visit the local library somebody has already checked them out. Must be quicker...

Kate | 8205 comments Can you put stuff on hold?

message 1353: by Laura (new)

Laura Newcombe (laurakbooks) | 74 comments Not at my local library unfortunately, I'm not sure why ):
Oh well, I might just buy them haha.

message 1354: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments I would die without holds. Literally. I NEVER get the chance to physically go to the library anymore, so without holds, I wouldn't have books.

message 1355: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 17, 2011 03:09AM) (new)

Holds are a blessing from the gods, I swear. I don't have time to go to the library closest to me to just browse, so I either put the item on hold and pick it up there OR I get stuck with what is at the library where I work. (Both are in the same system, but have separate collections.)

The largest number of holds I've checked in for a patron from delivery was 20 items (in one delivery). Seeing the look on their face when a whole shelf was just for them was priceless. <3

As for what I'm reading, uh... lots of things. I should really update my currently reading shelf.

@Amelia, Artemis Fowl actually has seven books now. An eighth-and final-one is planned for next year, i think.

Yeah, book series are starting to any me as well. Especially ones that go on FOREVER, like SEVEN BOOKS! Its acceptable if they're really good, like Harry Potter, but other then that..i start to loose 'respect' for the books, if they drag on to long. You know?
However, then seventh Artemis Fowl The Time Paradox was probably the best. Either that or The Eternity Code (#3)

Do we have a thread for Artemis Fowl? I totally want to discuss them now :)

message 1357: by [deleted user] (new)

I need to get caught up on Artemis Fowl. I never finished Time Paradox and need to read Atlantis Complex.

I havent read The Atlantis Complex either.

Abhijith Nuchin (nuchin) | 26 comments I've read Atlantis Complex and it is the worst book of the series. My favorite was Lost colony.

Lost Colony was fantastic up until the final part in the demon realm (or whatever it's called (i forgot).
I'm going to go make an Artemis Fowl discussion thread, we can continue there :)

I refuse to be embarrassed by my need for holds. Our library's limit for holds is 20, but I've never had all of them come in at once. That would be pretty cool.

I don't have a preference for series or not, because some series are amazing, and some should have stopped after one book, but they're pretty evenly split.

message 1363: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments I never really use holds and normally the most I have on hold at one time is like, 3. It doesn't seem like all that many people in my town/city read the same books I do so i generally don't have to worry about it being checked out if I want it.

message 1365: by Baxter (new)

Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 383 comments I'm reading Dan Simmons' Hyperion. It's basically a bunch of interconnected stories and man, it is worth looking into JUST for the first story told. At first it left me a bit cold, but once it started, it did not let up. Really mind-blowing stuff. A brutal look into religion (not all negative mind you) that when it isn't raising questions, throws some of the most intense and horrific things your way. Basically it was super duper good.

I'm on the second story right now, and it isn't catching my attention quite as much right now, but it's still very solid. Simmons knows how to entertain.

Im not even fifteen mages in yet, but that first chapter was really, really, really good.

My work recently changed the limit of items out at a time to 100 (from 50), so the limit of holds went up to 50. I'm waiting for the day where I'm the one to check in all 50 of someone's holds. I will be so excited that I will most likely want to meet them, shake their hand, and squee.

Currently reading: Uncool by Erin Elisabeth Conley, Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber, Twilight by Erin Hunter; I had to make a LinkedIn profile for work, so I'll be starting a couple of books on using LinkedIn soon.

That would be amazing. I want to be there when that happens.

I'm pretty sure we can only have out 50 books at once, but we've got a 5-person family, my dad rarely uses his card (he and my mom share), my brother never used his, and he and my sister are both at college, so we've got plenty of room. :)

I'm doing it! That is, reading it slow. I'm actually kinda forcing myself too. I'm only on page 446 and I started on Tuesday. It's Saturday. But I think I'm going to stay up all night and finish it. I could have easliy finished the book in two days, but ABC Family had been holding Harry Potter marathons, and I've been wathing those, so that's what I do unstead of read it. I give up trying though. It will be done, at the latest, tomorrow evening.

message 1381: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Congratulations Natalie!

I know how you feel about it being over. I've been trying to use upcoming movies as my way of convincing myself it isn't completely over, but even that is pretty ineffective, and in a few months I'll have to admit defeat once and for all.

I originally didn't really want the seventh book to come out because I didn't want it to end.

Thanks! I'm not really the movie Harry Potter person, but my friends and I are going to see the DH2 at midnight. I've been watching the movies this weekend, and I don't really like them.... It's not at all how I imaginied it.

message 1384: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments I know what you mean. I always end up being disappointed, but I have trouble disliking them because, well, they're Harry Potter. And that doesn't stop me from rewatching, and then complaining again.

☮♪Chloe wrote: "I am reading The House of the Scorpion finally."

That's a really good book. I was actually talking about it this morning. Last year or the year before, my sister used it as the basis for a paper for a college genetics course. I thought that was awesome.

Haha, that's kinda how I feel. I don't really like, but I like it. Because... it's Harry Potter.

I'm making my 7-year old sister read Harry Potter. She loves the movies, so I figure she'll like the books. I think she'll be able to read at least the first two.

message 1386: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorjaylene) | 4557 comments The movies are spectacular if you look at them as separate entities from the books. And if you look at them as movies from books, they're still better than other adaptations. And like Kate said: it's Harry Potter.

Personally, I loved Deathly Hallows Part 1. I thought they did a wonderful job.

Well done Natalie! Isnt Harry Potter the most amazing series ever?
Snape's story was AMAZING, and if they screw it up in the film I will hunt down david Yates and eat him.
Not really, but still...

Im going to put up a thread for Deathly Hallows Part 2 movie, so we can discuss that before and after we see it :)

message 1390: by Rarietty (new)

Rarietty | 319 comments I finished The Lost Hero. I HATE THE (cliffhanger) ENDING! Mainly because the next book is coming out in October. Why must authors torture us with things like that?

Now reading Wings by Aprilynne Pike. Just like I thought it would be. It reminds me of a way more interesting version of Twilight with faeries. I do like the cool idea of faeries actually not having wings, but flowers instead though.

message 1391: by Rebecca (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Taylor wrote: "The movies are spectacular if you look at them as separate entities from the books. And if you look at them as movies from books, they're still better than other adaptations. And like Kate said: it..."

I agree on almost all counts. They are actually very good movies, and for adaptations, they are also very good, but I'm one of those people who dislikes even slight deviations, although I know they are necessary.

And yes, I think that DH1 may be my favorite one of the movies. They had started to cut out the humor from the books when they made the movies, but they brought it back, and balanced it all really well-a great movie that was very faithful.

message 1393: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Rebecca wrote: "I didnt really like Wings. It took me forever to finish it"

It didn't take me long at all, but I didn't particularly like it. I get annoyed by romance-centered books unless they're very good.

message 1394: by Rarietty (new)

Rarietty | 319 comments I only started a couple days ago and I'm already around page 200. It's just a quick read, but I could see how you could take forever to finish it if you are reading other books at the same time.

message 1395: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments It's funny how diferrent people's opinions are of what goes by fast. If I'm only on the 200th page after a couple days, I think it's taking a while. Although, you do have to take homework and stuff into account, but...

Basically Borges wants to take everything you understand about reality and make it go kaboom. I'm two stories in and I think it's one of the few things to seriously blow my mind.
