message 653: by [deleted user] (new)

message 660: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments yay! what did you think of Hunger Games?

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 592 comments Yay, Amelia! What did you think? Did you love it?

I am currently reading The Hobbit, and really enjoying it. I will hopefully find my copy of The Fellowship of the Ring soon so I can read that next. I'm in the mood for a fantasy marathon of books! (and I don't want to do most of my summer reading)

message 662: by Diana (new)

Diana Well, Amelia gave the Hunger Games five stars, so I'm guessing she liked it....... :)

message 663: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) yes, I liked it!
However, I was kind of surprised at how *little* violence there was in the book. Like, most of the killings happened off-screen, and so it almost gave the book a detached, careless tone to it. Hmmm. And a good portion of the Hunger Games was just survival stuff. I guess I hearkened back to the PJ days when there was a lot of hand-to-hand combat :)
Other than that, and sometimes Katniss' bleakness getting a little hard to sympathize with, it was great. Seriously, one of the best books I've ever read. I guess I was just expecting it to be "heavier" than it really was :)

message 664: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie (serenity77) hmm i loved both hunger games and catching fire.. they were amazing..
i can't wait for mockingjay:)

message 665: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 4295 comments Mod
I agree Amelia, i finished it, and I was like: "Wait a second, the whole theme of the book is kids murdering each other. WHY WAS THERE NO (very little) VIOLENCE!?!?!
However, Collins executed it very well!

Right now, I have left The Dark Deeps: The Hunchback Assignments 2 by Arthur Slade at school, so tonight I will start reading Misery by Stephen King

message 666: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) okay good, I'm glad you feel the same way!
I mean, it seemed a little "off" or whatever, but seriously this THG is one of the best books I've ever read.
And I think I'm going to put Slade's books on my TBR. They look REALLY interesting!

message 667: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) yeah but that's a good example of what the author intended vs. what the reader actually experienced. For me, it didn't work. I kind of need to see it, or at least have it described or something in order to get a reaction. The less the character seems to care, it's hard for me to get that emotional reaction. And that's okay, if you're dealing with something that's not emotional or psychological. But the implications could have been stressed.
I would have had Katniss reflect a little more (even briefly) on her surroundings, on what exactly is going on and how major the situation is, in order to convey that sense of urgency to the reader. But because Katniss has been having to survive and fend for herself for awhile now, it made her almost seem as if being a tribute wasn't that big of a deal. I know that wasn't how she felt, but it's how it came across. Her hunting skills an survival mindset gave her an advantage, sure, but it also made her seem a little too detached from what was going on, and the reader (in this case, me) wasn't as emotionally invested as I could have been.

message 668: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 4295 comments Mod
Yeah, I definitely agree.
Katniss was way to emotionally stable-and I also think Collins could have described her surroundings/feelings a little more.

But (i think i read this in your review, and I agree with it) in a very small number of words, Collins forced The Capitol and the way of life in Panem onto us rather easily.
And it wasnt completely absurd either.
Thinking about it, the way this all functions is probably one (of the many) Pros about the story.

Yes! And Slade's novels are very good!
I would have given the first a 3.5 stars.
And by me, its very hard to score above a 4.
With that in mind, The Hunchback Assignments was sitting on 4 stars for a week, before I changed it.
My only problem with it is, that the scenes are over too quickly.
Slade has some very visual scenes, and could easily have thrust in more detail to make this a 5 star book. Having said that, there is already lots of detail there. its just that he could...'relish' in his scenes more.
I can see this as a movie really soon.

message 670: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) that makes sense!
I feel that way about Suzanne Collins' a little bit. I'm reading her books going "MORE INFO, PLEASE!"

message 679: by Jenna (new)

Jenna I just read The Dark Divine. It was good, but I felt like it was kinda cheesy in some parts.
It's a quick summer read if you're looking for a last chance of free time for good books, though!

How good it it!?!?!?!?!
That is my favorite book, and if you would look on my 5-star shelf, out of 400 books, there are only 20 on that shelf. BOOK THIEF is the first.

message 686: by Diana (new)

Diana I'm really liking it so far :)

message 687: by [deleted user] (new)

I tried reading it once before. I got about halfway then got side-tracked. So I'm trying again. :)

I'm finally starting The Hunger Games!

Even though I *adore* THE HUNGER GAMES,
Anyone who says it is a better book then The Book Thief must be crazy

message 691: by Diana (new)

Diana I agree! Nothing compares to The Book Thief.

message 692: by Baxter (new)

Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 383 comments Still need to read The Book Thief. I feel kind of bad for not getting to it yet.

Anywho, I'm not reading anything right now, but I'm waiting for my copy of Winter's Bone to come in the mail. I saw the movie two weeks ago and it blew me away twenty times over (currently my favorite movie of the year) and so when I heard it was based on a book, I jumped up all over that.

message 693: by Pandy (new)

Pandy | 185 comments I just finished The Hunger Games - I wouldn't call it one of my favorite book, but I do like it. I only read the first sixty pages (which didn't really draw me in) of The Book Thief, so I can't compare them.

message 695: by MrJsPancakeHouse (new)

MrJsPancakeHouse Im currently about to finish KIRINS : The Spell of No'an, and will most likely pick up with the second in the trilogy Kirins: The Flight of the Ain

THE BOOK THIEF IS AMAZING!
Baxter, read it.

What blew me away, was not the characters or plot, but the writing style.
Markus Zusak obviously has a gift for words, and the style is absolutely beautiful, marvelous and breath taking.
I think you would really enjoy it Baxter.
If you have a look on my 5 star shelf, of the 300+ books ive got THE BOOK THIEF is one of 20 on that shelf.

message 697: by Baxter (new)

Baxter (julietrocksmysocks) | 383 comments Okay okay, I get the message. I'll read The Book Thief.

And Diana, Winter's Bone is about a 17 year old girl living in the Ozarks who has to take care of her two young siblings by herself. But she has to go and find her meth-making dad or their house will be taken away from them.

On that note, while I'm (still) waiting for that, I checked out Les Chants De Maldoror, a French surrealist book that influence people like Salvador Dali.

I feel so guilty.
A week ago, I put aside Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl for Misery (which was amazing, BTW).
Now Im ditching Anne Frank again, so I can read Mockingjay :) :) :) :)

Mockingjay (Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins I have this fire-red cover :S
Its really smooth and shiney in real-life. Im not sure if i like it or not though...

Misery by Stephen King I wish I had this cover for MISERY. Thats a good cover. Better then mine, anyway. But Misery was an exceptional, amazing and horrifying book.
I am seeing the movie tomorrow :)

message 700: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie (serenity77) I'm reading P.S. I love you and The children of the mind... both are pretty good:)
