Vis (v2blast) | 32 comments Robert E. Howard

...and a whole ton more. Just search the "author" field for "Robert E. Howard", and you'll see what I mean. (Lists of authors listed as one, etc.)

For Howard alone, a ridiculous amount of book merging and title-fixing, etc. is necessary.

message 1357: by Vis (new)

Vis (v2blast) | 32 comments Oh, also Roy Thomas (story) and Robert E. Howard (original creator), created as a result of one such mess-up.

Lobstergirl Paul Smith is in desperate need of disambiguation. Someone has written an author description for the fashion designer Paul Smith - it's not even clear to me that any of the books listed are by him. Or if he's an author at all...

Since neither wikipedia nor his own website mention anything about any books, I don't think he belongs here either, or at least not in spot #1. Wiki lists 6 others just under writers though, so lots of work to be done. I'll help later on; summer is calling just now. :-)

Found one actual book by the fashion guy & moved it to the 13-space Paul Smith (more to come!) along with the author profile info, but I don't know how to move the video from http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/... to http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/... Thank you to anyone who can!

It kind of looks like the two books are from other people. One of them (Delicious Sandwich Recipes) being a free ebook with "Master Resale and Redistribution Rights" giving anyone the right to sell it or give it away which I think that's why it was pulled from Amazon. I can't seem to find the actual creator in the sea of 'buy/free download here' and the PDF of the book doesn't have anyone listed. The second book (Cooking with Ganja [Kindle Edition]) seems to be a digital version of this book (with a different author). http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68...

Cleared the books from here.

But there are still all these:

This one's description said "NOT A BOOK," but according to worldcat, it actually is...with 45 editions. Changed the author to E.E. Smith, combined. Try checking worldcat, first...it can save many, many headaches.

EDIT: Didn't check to see who made the NOT A BOOK description...just posting as a general help, about worldcat (didn't want to appear to be flaming!)

Chuck | 51 comments It's not a full book from what I can tell, and it is not a valid part of the lensman series.

I'm also beginning to dislike General Books LLC, General Books, and Books LLC after looking at those lists and also from the descriptions I did find on the ISBN of that triplanetary one... or one of them if not that one.

message 1382: by Rosenkavalier (new)

Rosenkavalier | 52 comments Hi, I found that maybe there is a problem with two authors with the same name.

This is the list of books by "Alberto Farina":

http://www.goodreads.com/author/list/...

A. Farina is an Italian author and translator of cinema-related books but in the list I found a couple of titles probably relating to electronics. It seem clear to me that they should be separated. How can it be done? Creating another author and separating the books? VIce versa? Thanks.

message 1383: by Beth (new)

Beth (bethjustbeth) | 1568 comments Pick one of them, and add another space between the name...then move all his books over to him. So one would be Alberto^Farina; the other would be Alberto^^Farina.

message 1384: by Rosenkavalier (new)

Rosenkavalier | 52 comments Beth, is this the standard procedure? I mean, it will be then rather hard to put the right name when adding a book.
Isn't it possible to have two authors with the same name?

message 1385: by Beth (new)

Beth (bethjustbeth) | 1568 comments This is the standard procedure...I haven't been able to think of an improvement...if you do, let the PTB know, in the feedback group.

Chuck | 51 comments Beth wrote: "This is the standard procedure...I haven't been able to think of an improvement...if you do, let the PTB know, in the feedback group."

It would have to be handled on the back end, and show up as a choice like a search with each author listed and having to pick the correct one. Simply linking to a different page is easy, but I suspect the issue would be changing the code of how authors are currently handled.

message 1387: by Beth (new)

Beth (bethjustbeth) | 1568 comments Right...the feedback group is the PTB that does this stuff. Right now, there's a "disambiguation" tool, but I believe we have to start on our end with separating them...then you get the choice when you go in to make changes on other books...I've never used it; it's fairly recent, so I can't give a lot of info on that.

message 1388: by Rosenkavalier (new)

(We've actually had the feature for over a year.)

No, the disambig tool won't allow you to add books to an existing author profile. It only allows you to separate off books to a newly-created author. It is the best way to separate off multiple books by an author of the same-or-similar name.

message 1390: by Abcdarian (new)

Abcdarian | 26579 comments I've discovered that the disambig tool works well to combine authors if you first move the books to a made-up name, e.g. John naturebooks Smith. Then you can edit that author profile to John Smith with however many spaces are needed to merge with an existing guy.

If you follow me. :-)

Why did I not think of that! That just made my disambiguation life so much easier. ;)

Kat Black (kat_black_author) | 13 comments Dear Librarians, can you please help? I'm one of three Kat Blacks listed on Goodreads and our books have become entangled. One Kat Black is the creator of the Golden Tarot, one is a children's author - Books of Tormod, I think - and I write erotica. I have tried to understand how to go about 'disambiguating', but am afraid it's all a bit beyond me! Any assistance would be welcome.
Also, I have two stories published in anthologies that are listed Goodreads, but the books do not appear on my author page. Can you tell me what I might do to get this rectified?
With thanks

Kat,

I think you should be all set now, let me know if you're not. :) Because you have the Kat^Black (with only one space) name, anything written by the other Kat Black's will go to your profile first. Just give us a shout here if you see it in the future and we'll fix it for you. :)

It has to be. The tool was added in part because of a discussion at the annual GR holiday get-together (and became fully available maybe 2-3 months after that date). And I didn't make it to the one the past year, so it must have been the one the year before that.
