Lisa | 78 comments I am going to family reading night at my daughter's school where we will attend a reading of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. She will make a craft related to the book then we will all have cookies and milk. It is a extended part of the PTO meeting in March. Question is what book could I read for this? Obviously the book they are reading is too short, I was thinking of reading a book with a mouse it in, but don't know any beside The Tale of Desparaux which I have already read. Anyone have any ideas for a book?

message 52: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments What about Stuart Little? You could read it to your daughter!

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments Other mice/mouse suggestions:

Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
Three Blind Mice - Agatha Christie
Four Blind Mice - James Patterson
Cat & Mouse - James Patterson
Cat and Mouse - Gunter Grass

Lisa | 78 comments So family reading night at my kids school would not be acceptable? We will be listening to book readings, doing crafts etc. This is the closest I come to getting out for any preformance. My kids don't play sports, we live on a farm so we don't go to parks really. I can't get a sitter to go out very often so any adult event is out for me.
I just read an earlier post saying anything reading related was not included.

I went to see them on 2008 and they are amazing! I hope you enjoy yourself :)

message 57: by Coralie (new)

Coralie Kathryn - yes.

Nicole - yes to all of those. I hope the thinking is not too hard. I haven't started to think about what I am going to read.

Katy - yes they are all good.

message 58: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jml_417) I'm going to see the musical Young Frankenstein at the end of March, but I've already read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Although I wouldn't mind reading it again, does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks.

Sally (sallysimply) | 537 comments I'll be watching a couple of live music performances next month, also in NYC. I was thinking maybe Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist would work (music in NYC). What do you think Coralie?

I'm going to a Capoeira Women's Conference in NYC in April, so I could read:
A book about capoeira
A book about women in sports?
A book that takes place in New York

Are all these ok?

Fiona,

What about a book set near the city/county in which the theme park is located? Or a specific ride?

The Wave Maker: Story Of Theme Park Pioneer George Millay And The Creation Of Seaworld, Magic Mountain, And Wet 'n Wild by Tim O'Brien
This is one of my favorite authors for fiction -- he wrote The Things They Carried

31 Months in Japan: The Building of a Theme Park
Selling Jerusalem: Relics, Replicas, Theme Parks

Trolls Don't Ride Roller Coasters
On the Roller Coaster Called Motherhood
The Roller-coaster Years

A Long Walk Up the Water Slide

Anyone know any good fiction or non-fic book about girls/women playing sports?

How about Murder on a Bad Hair Day?

Cindy - yes
Cindie - yes to both of them.

message 79: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments I just got invited to a first grade musical about dinosaurs later this month. I can hardly wait.
I was afraid I'd have to use my trip to the opera Rigoletto, which seemed like such a search for a tragic book.

message 80: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments Here's a fun one for picking books, but I need ideas. My daughter's elementary school chorus is doing a performance this weekend at an art festival. They are singing "Don't Stop Believin'" (so I assume I could tie in mob books through the "Sopranos" connection -- too bad I've already read "Beat the Reaper"!) and some song called "Fireflies". Also: local art festival. Elementary school. Chorus concerts.

This should be easy, but I'm not feeling creative!

Given what else is on my plate for this challenge, I'm looking for something light and fun.

Any ideas?

message 81: by Belinda (new)

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments Very much so, thanks!

message 82: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Ashley - Just by the title alone Firefly Lane (haven't read but heard great reviews) and this Xtian fiction I read and LOVED Fireflies in December. Fireflies is a lil heavy but I read it about the same time as The Help and was pleased with the results. Lemme think a while on some other suggestions tied to art or chorus. I'm SURE there's plenty out there.

Donna Jo - I have an opera book for you that's tragic and WONDERFUL! Bel Canto! My book club adored it despite some of its tearjerking moments. It's about a hostage situation!

message 83: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Ashley

The Ice Chorus: A Novel
On the Line - The Creation of A Chorus Line
Delilah Doolittle and the Canine Chorus: A Pet Detective Mystery

Course if you go the art festival route, any book which the main character works in a gallery *OR* art was stolen (The Da Vinci Code) works!

Tanja, I've read Bel Canto and I agree it's wonderful. We did it for book discussion and wept as we talked about it. I think I'll go with the dinosaurs. May have to hunt up the title to that mystery where the dinosaurs all wear human-shaped body suits.

Also, if you like mysteries that aren't too gory, the Benni Harper mysteries by Earlene Fowler qualify. Benni works in a folk art museum. All the titles are names of quilt patterns. The first one is
Fool's Puzzle

Anonymous Rex it is. I was going to read it several years ago, but I had a whole pile of books out from the library and it was due back before I got to it. Thanks.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 306 comments Coralie--

Question for you based on your example in the task description. My boyfriend and I are planning to go to NYC or Washington DC for a weekend and we will be all over the place..museums, parks, etc. So could I read a book set in whichever city we go to? Based on the example used in the task description it would seem to work.

"For example, if I attend the soccer game between Melbourne Victory (my local team) and Seong Nam (from Korea), I could read a book about soccer, with Victory in the title, set in Korea or set in the docklands of Melbourne where the game is being played."

Yes, if you are visiting the city and enjoying a number of scenes around the city, a book set in that city would work fine. Have a nice weekend.

There's a running death theme through the club (clothing, music, even the logo is a kitty skull) so I was thinking I could read Shallow Graves which has Shallow in the title and is a crime book.
