Tina Theresa | 47 comments Because I had City of Ashes, I read it despite my feelings about City of Bones. I liked it a lot more. I am glad that I gave this series a second chance.

message 52: by Katy (new)

Katy City of Ashes is probably the least memorable of TMI books for me. The only thing I really remember is (view spoiler) At least I think that is in book 2. Maybe it was 1.

I haven't read CoLS but I've read the other 4 and like the series :) I plan on reading the 5th book one of these days.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments For me City of Ashes is where (view spoiler) Though I don't think much can beat book 3.

message 54: by Katy (new)

Katy Haha (view spoiler) I think book 3 is my fave.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Yes! Thank you after a while all of the character names start to blend. See I had them as Clare and Chase! Ha-ha!

message 56: by Katy (new)

Katy Least you were close :p

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Kind of, but I think I stole theh authors name and inserted as the main character . . .

message 58: by Tina Theresa (new)

Tina Theresa | 47 comments City of Glass is my favorite. In my opinion, the series should have stopped with book 3. Book 4 was alright. Book 5 was a mess.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments I haven't been able to bring myself to read past book 3 yet.

message 60: by Katy (new)

Katy I agree. I haven't read book 5, but the 4th one felt like the story was too drawn out. And I was annoyed that (view spoiler)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments We're moving on to the third book in the series, City of Glass.

Also an email will being going out with a link to whether or not members want to coninue on reading this series or not!

message 62: by Jess (new)

Jess (justinbieberheartsme) | 5 comments Finished the fifth one, City of Lost Souls, a couple months ago and I thought it was great. We sadly have to wait until 2014 for City of Heavenly Fire, the sixth book.

Oh well, at least we have the movie on the 23rd of August. It actually looks pretty good! What do you guys think?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments The movie looks really cool, but Clary looks way to glammed up. Other then that I'm really excited.

message 64: by Lauren (last edited Feb 14, 2013 06:50AM) (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I hope it is OK that I'm going backwards when the group read is on book #3.

I just started listening to City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare and am enjoying the world building very much although I am still on the fence about the narration.

Clary is OK - not sure I have any strong feelings about her one way or the other (I'm on chapter 7 now).

Jace is very intriguing - he has definite romantic hero potential but isn't quite there yet.

My favorite character so far is Dorothea, Clary's would be witch neighbor. Her comments make me smile (if not laugh out loud).

I am a plot rather than a character driven reader so it is important to me that the story develops well and makes sense. So far, so good in this department although there are some plot holes, such as (view spoiler).

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Lauren, that's perfectly fine! You can jump in on these at anytime.

The plot whole, I think when I reread the book it made since, but right now I can't remember . . .

Glad you're enjoying it. Clary never really hooked me as a character, Jace did. ^_- The crazy moving plot is what kept me hooked on this first book.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

Read books 1-3 a couple a years ago. I remember finding book one a little difficult to get into but Once I grasped the plot I really enjoyed them! Can't remember the ins and outs of them but I'm going to re-read the first 3 and pick up the rest when I'm in the library next :)

message 67: by Christine (new)

Christine (christined22) | 2 comments Ok. After reading all the comments, I will give book 2 a try!

message 68: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Just finished chapter 10 of City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare .

Overall, I am enjoying the story and Clare's world building is really good although her writing lacks some of the creativity, foreshadowing and language construction that characterizes some of my favorite epic fantasies (Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter).

In addition, the teenage sniping and angst is starting to get on my nerves. It reminds me why I am not a big fan of YA. I had enough of this nonsense in high school and I have no wish to relive it in my reading. Hope this will get better as the characters mature.

The characters don't mature, and it's not helped by Clare's inconsistencies.

I'm in book 3 now. I still don't like these books. I'm not continuing with 4. I'm going to finish this one (because I can't leave a book half read) and move on. If any of you want to know the intricacies of how I feel, you can check out my reviews.

message 70: by Vera (new)

Vera M. Just finished city of bones. I'm kind of mixed about this. The book was action packed and moved fairly quickly. There were times when I really liked what I was reading and thought it was interesting. There were times when I thought I've read this before. Then there were times I think I liked it because it was starting to teeter on the annoying but didn't cross the line into it. The next in this series is definitely on my tbr list but not at the top. I will also watch the movie when it comes out because I can definitely see where it reads like a tv show or movie and I'm interested to see what they do with it. As far as the YA books made into a movie this is not a terrible book.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Love your thoughts on it Vera.

message 72: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Well said, Vera.

It wasn't the worst YA book I've ever read but it certainly wasn't the best.

None of the characters were particularly likeable and I didn't like the way the kids interacted with each other - too much sniping.

The villain was also meh. I didn't really get the all encompassing evil vibe that the truly menacing baddies give off.

That said, the story has potential so I will probably read the next one and I will go and see the film.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments All right City of Fallen Angels is up! Remember to mind you spoilers.

Is this book just as good as the others in the series? Or should it have ended at book 3?

City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare

message 74: by Natalie (new)

Natalie I'm crazy about this series, but I have to admit that it's my least favourite book of it. I hated how the relationship between Clary and Jace turned out, I hated Jace's bahaviour, I hated Maya- Simon- Isabelle triangle, I hated Alec's and Magnus'es fights.
HATED.
But it's Mortal Instruments, so I just couldn't be bad book.

message 75: by Reader-ramble (new)

Reader-ramble I'm not going to continue with the series. I throw in the towel. I guess you could say I'm too close to the process of writing (including editing) to even say they're a decent effort. I wanted to like them, to even merit them with something, but I just can't. Sorry, MI fans. I'm not won over.

Considering that even fans don't like the fourth book, I think it's a good idea for me to stop reading these in general.

message 76: by Amber (new)

Amber (justcurious) | 4 comments I'm up to date on this series, and to be honest, if it wasn't for the fact I have an OCD for unfinished series', I would've quit it at book 3.

I think my review pretty much sums up my feelings towards this book.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Bummer!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments City of lost souls is book number five in the Mortal Instrument series and the final book in our YA Group Series read! (The next one doesn't come out until March 2014.)

Has the developement of the love story surprised you? Do you like where it's going?

message 79: by Katy (new)

Katy I still haven't read CoLS even though it's been sitting on my bookshelf for almost a year...

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Katy wrote: "I still haven't read CoLS even though it's been sitting on my bookshelf for almost a year..."

Yeah, I'm with you. However, I'm stuck back on book 4.

message 81: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Rubens-malam | 3 comments I cheated and bought the audio books 1-4 (5 isn't available yet) so far the story of Clary and Jace has been engaging but I can't honestly say I've been itching to get back in the car to listen to the next instalment. Normally with any series I don't have the patience to wait for the audio version and seek the e-book instead. This hasn't been the case here.
The city of fallen angels was probably the most unpredictable and therefore my favourite. I look forward to finishing the books and finding my next book series.

message 82: by Flint (new)

Flint | 1 comments I've enjoyed the whole series. I like the exploration in the last one of the whole issue of forgiveness and family - and how somethings are forgiveable (Jace and Clary) but some things are not (Alec and Magnus). Looking forward to seeing where it all goes.

message 83: by 411Junkie (new)

411Junkie | 6 comments Well, I've finished the whole series up until this point and I'm anxious for the 6th book already.

I can relate to some of those who commented that it's not the best YA series, but for the most part I'm a huge fan. I started out by reading The Infernal Devices and I just couldn't let this world go so I jumped into the Mortal Instruments.

I love the story arch and it's progression. And focusing on this particular book? I think Clare did a good job with smoothing out all the loose ends from City of Glass and City of Fallen Angels. And I think she does a good job in setting us up for the final installment. And being a fan of Infernal Devices, I loved all the references Clare put into Lost Souls. I absolutely loved it.

message 84: by Mary (new)

Mary Bracken | 18 comments Does anyone have these on their kindle that they can lend to me? i read the first book so just #2 etc.

message 85: by Brandy (new)

Brandy | 11 comments The Mortal Instruments isn't my favorite YA series, but I do enjoy it. I prefer Infernal Devices personally. I just think Tessa is a more likable character than Clary.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments I keep hearing that. I need to try out the Infernal Devices soon.

message 87: by Kylie (last edited Aug 02, 2013 01:39PM) (new)

Kylie (kyliecarstairs) I thought that I was the only one who preferred Tessa to Clary. I also thought that Tessa was a more interesting and real character. I prefer the Infernal Devices to the Mortal Instruments series, but maybe that's because the Infernal Devices has Jem and Will and Magnus, all in one! ;)
