Lori I've put a hold on The Help at the libes over a month ago, and currently I'm #965! The good thing is that there are 201 copies.

Annnnnnnd Wild Swans added to my to-read pile.

I want to get this one, too, Christine. I met and heard Coben speak at a book festival and thought he was great!

Tracyene | 11 comments The story is so unique and I like that I'm getting a glimpse into another culture.

What book of his would you ladies suggest I start with?"

Barb-- One that I have not yet read, but I've heard people say is excellent, my partner included:
Tell No One.

Christine - do you think this one is a good one for Barb's first Coben?

I read that book about 14 years ago, loved it, and much of it has stayed with me. I could not put it down, I recall; the clear-eyed view of Jung Chang and her narrative abilities supported me through what is, quite often, a harrowing story.

I'm about to start The Priory by Dorothy Whipple.

message 360: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm about to start The Spellmans Strike Again by Lisa Lutz, and I'm thrilled because I need some humor right now and these books are hilarious. I loved the first three: The Spellman Files, Curse of the Spellmans, and Revenge of the Spellmans.

I thought that this one was a great Coben and would be an excellent first choice.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I am just loving The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag [image error] . Flavia de Luce is such an outstanding character. Quite a comfort read, indeed.

I remember liking it back when I was 18, but it's been a few/many years now! I remember really liking Firestarter.

I am reading Cowboy & Wills: A Love Story. This author knows how to tell a funny story!

My first one was The Innocent and I was hooked, but Tell No One is a great choice.

Just be careful not to pick one of his series books, unless of course you want to start with early ones. He has lots of stand alone titles. If you do want to try his series, the first one is Deal Breaker

That looks good!

message 369: by [deleted user] (new)

She is telling her story raising an autistic child and also her adventure with her pets. When she hears her son's diagnosis, she comforts herself (and him) by getting a fish tank. She writes later: "With every new problem Wills encountered, I bought a new pet. We now had six more hermit crabs and two more hamsters. I cruised Petco the way drunks frequent bars."

I am at Chapter Four. They now own a rabbit, Wills wants a puppy, and he is about to start Kindergarten. The book has never veered to the maudlin, it's just a sweet and very human story.

I think I'll get that one. Thanks for mentioning it.

Darkpool | 222 comments Barb wrote: "I havn't started it yet, but next on deck for me is Gods Behaving Badly: A Novel."

Oh, I read that one Xmas a year ago. Good, amusing fluff. I hope you're enjoying it Barb!

Currently (along with maybe 4 other hard copy books) I'm listening to Cleopatra's Daughter on the CD player in my car. I'm just loving it! It has a bit of a YA feel to it, as the story is told from the point of view of a 12 year old, but it is full of unobtrusive detail about what life must have been like in Rome under Octavian. I'm only sorry that the library doesn't have any other audiobooks by this author - I'll have to read her others the old fashioned way.

I've added this one, too, Jeanette.

Ashley (readerandwriter) I am currently reading the final book of the Percy Jackson series, "The Last Olympian". Can't wait to read what happens.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Last night I finished The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag and decided to pick up Thirteen Reasons Why, a teen novel that I have on my list. I'd been putting it off because it deals with a teen's suicide, and I was afraid it would be too depressing. After starting it last night, I think it's going to be really good.

message 377: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished The Namesake and now starting Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil for my bookclub read.

It's so good, Christine. I've had a lot of 5 star reads this year - maybe I'm too easy a grader - but if I could give this book more than 5 stars I certainly would!

I just finished The Devil's Arithmetic, a young adult book about the holocaust. It was excellent. I'm about to start Eifelheim for another group read.

I think The Devil's Arithmetic is one of the best young adult books about the Holocaust, Lee. Your next read looks very interesting, too. I saw the word "plague" in its description and thought, "Oh, boy." I love, love plague related books.

I love plague related books too Kathy! Ever since I read The Doomsday Book I have been hooked.

Oh, my, Lee. I am so excited that you are a plague fan, too. We have got to compare notes. I will check my books and send you a message about what I have in my "plague" category so far.

That was such a good one! Another great book in the plague-like genre is The Last Town on Earth: A Novel The Last Town on Earth A Novel by Thomas Mullen

I used my Kindle credit (I got $10 credit from Amazon for a mistake they made a zillion years ago and I never even noticed) to download this one. I'm excited!

message 390: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Thanks, Christine. Added it. A non-fiction book that completely engrossed me (but definitely not a comfort read) was The Coming Plague by Laurie Garrett.

Lisa, Year of Wonders is one of my favorite books, and The Last Town on Earth, although not plague, it is as you say, plague-like genre is one I started on audio tape and plan to finish my print version. I don't know why I haven't gotten to that yet.

Right, it's not actually plague, it's killer flu.

Well, Lisa, I only have 7 books so far in my plague category, but the link is http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/... I am laughing to myself that we are excited about this topic in our "comfort" reads group. LOL! I must be stranger than I thought for finding comfort in that topic.

Yeah, I noticed that. Interesting in the same way to me. The Coming Plague is also about all sorts of viruses.

I think many of us here find comfort in books others would find horrifying. True of me! ;-)
