My book club read this last year it was great! I'm looking forward to seeing the movie this summer to see if lives remotely close to the book.

Darkpool | 222 comments I've finally been reading a book I was given at Christmas; Improbable Eden: The Dry Valleys of Antarctica. It's chiefly a photography book, and it was the images that caught my sister's eye when she spotted it on a bookshop sales table, and thought I might like it. It is, however, the accompanying writing that has really enchanted me today. The essayist, Bill Green, is a scientist who has been studying the frozen lakes in this part of Antarctica for more than 3 decades. He writes like an angel. The best of what he's written in this book are vignettes from his visits to the area. I'm very happy to discover he's published a more substantial book on the subject: Water, Ice, And Stone: Science and Memory on the Antarctic Lakes (and that the library has a copy!)

It is! I loved that one!

This sounds like a book I would enjoy Darkpool. I hope my library has it!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) The Help is my book club book for June. I have it home from the library but I'm not ready to start reading it yet. Hopefully in a week or two.

message 3856: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisaspoot) The Help is just wonderful. Haven't enjoyed a book that much in ages!

message 3857: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisaspoot) I'm currently reading The Seance by John Harwood. So far, I rather like it.

are all the other ones good?

message 3861: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 3 comments I have just finished A Discovery of Witches (which I loved) and will be starting The Paris wife. I have read all the Percy Jackson books and enjoyed them. I would suggest not reading them all at one go, but leave a little time in between. I found them a little flat after a while.

Maude | 479 comments Lisa, I just started The Help yesterday but have been thinking about reading it for ages. It has such great reviews, I know I am going to love it.

I've heard they are. I havent read the others because I got side tracked by other things.

I've been wanting to read it for ages too. I love that my book club is reading it because it's forcing me to get to it. I think I'll probably be starting it in about a week.

I finally settled on a book that is definitely a comfort read. Murder With Peacocks is so far a light and funny mystery. I'm happy that the protagonist isn't too ditzy.

It's a great series! I have to continue with it. I love humorous mysteries!

I haven't read too many funny mysteries but I've been pleasantly surprised with this one so far. The family reminds me a little bit of the one in Lisa Lutz's books.

message 3871: by [deleted user] (new)

I am pretty sick at the moment so I spent all day on the couch reading. I finished Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson and also read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros . (SO SHORT!)

message 3872: by [deleted user] (new)

Not barfy sick, I hope! Get better quick! Did you rate these books on GR? Someone recommended the last one to me.

Maude | 479 comments Christine, Take care of yourself and feel better soon!

message 3874: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, I'm so glad you still felt like reading. It's no fun being stuck sick on the couch if you can't read. LOL!

message 3875: by [deleted user] (new)

It's not my stomach, just a horrible cold beginning. Jeannette, I rated Wintergirls a 5/5 and The House on Mango Street a 3/5. I liked Mango Street, but it wasn't as developed as it may have been if it were intended for an older audience (at least that was my impression). It's super short, and some vignettes were only about 3 paragraphs. It's only a little over 100 pages. I can see why it would be very good for high school discussions and I understand why it gets such high reviews. But for me it just wasn't enough of a book.

message 3876: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks girls! I am trying to pick another book. I can't sleep....too sneezy.

I'm glad it's just a cold, and not the flu. It will be better when you can get out.

I'll take a pass on Mango Street. I have been introduced to novellas (novels < 200 pages) just recently. They can be really good, if the author makes the effort.

I've been doing a lot of Japanese, so I'm not reading anything right now. Seems I've burned out on "public" reading. Nice long plane trip coming up, so I've got a few books to take with.

Jeannette, I have a long plane trip coming up this summer, too, and the first thing I've started planning is my reading list for the plane. LOL!

message 3881: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm making a list of some longer books, so I don't have as much to carry. I'm heading to Germany. Where are you going, Kathy?

Hawaii. I have a Kindle, so I'm making sure it is loaded, but I, also, want to take at least a couple of print books, as they are my comfort when flying.

message 3883: by [deleted user] (new)

I forgot about your Hawaii trip! Someday I'll head west instead of east.

Well, I want to head east someday. LOL! My husband will be going to Germany sometime in the next few months, but I don't think I get to accompany him on that one.

message 3885: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband never goes anywhere interesting on business. :(

Someday soon I'll visit Japan and Australia.

message 3886: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Since I finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett I've started True Grit by Charles Portis . I hope I'll like it because I love the movies and it looks like a quick read as well.

If I didn't get to go to Hawaii when he goes, I would be way jealous of his travels. He just spent 20 days in California, and upcoming is Seattle, Hawaii, and Germany. Next fall sometime is South Korea. You definitely need to go to Japan, Jeannette.

message 3888: by [deleted user] (new)

If Lea ends up in Japan, we'll go visit. Australia will be a side trip to see some friends!

My book club read True Grit - it was okay - I liked some of the stuff, but this was one of the few where I thought the movies where better. I really did like the character of Mattie Ross though.

It's a little outside of the norm of what I'd usually read but my Dad also told me to read it. He read it the year it was published and it's been a favourite ever since.

Oh yay! I hope that you like it, Lee!

I'm in a choosing rut. I don't know what I want to read. I need to figure it out though because I have waiting room time coming up.

message 3895: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't opened a book in almost a week.....

message 3897: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (olivia_boler) | 24 comments I am reading I Think I Love You by Allison Pearson, and really enjoying it. In addition to being an insightful look into celebrity worship, it's also the first e-book I've checked out from my public library. I'm reading it on my iPad. If only the Kindle would allow this kind of thing!

message 3898: by [deleted user] (new)

Kindle has an app for the iPad (I download Kindle books to my iMac -- don't own a Kindle).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html...

message 3899: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (olivia_boler) | 24 comments Yes, I have the Kindle app for the iPad--thanks! I have both (admitted gear head). I find the Kindle easier to read since it has an anti-glare screen. The iPad, however, is great for reading at night in the dark. Amazon doesn't allow borrowing of books from libraries or sharing of books with fellow readers. Maybe that will change...

message 3900: by [deleted user] (new)

d'uh! I just re-read your post! *sorry* Our library doesn't have a Kindle download, either. But, I think you can share/loan books on amazon, at least that's what I've been hearing on other threads.

Someone who knows about all this (since I obviously ;) don't) will hopefully be along later on this thread. Lisa, maybe? Or Chrissie, tomorrow?
