ConstantReader76a | 26 comments I just have to vent my extreme frustration with shortsighted and narrowminded publishers. I live in South Africa and when I first bought my Kindle (May 2010) it was a godsend. I read a lot and sustaining my habit was unaffordable. Here, new books are very expensive and our public libraries are a joke. Now I had instant gratification at a fraction of the price! What has changed? I know that rising e-book prices are a reality no matter what e-reader you own and I can deal with it. The costs are, in some cases, still less than what a new book would cost me. But what irritates me is the fact that my selections have become very limited. About 90% of the books recommended in this group are not available to users in my country due to copyright restrictions. Even the IAD series which I was able to buy last year on Kindle, are no longer available. I would make the investment and buy the damn books locally, but finding them is almost impossible. After many months of fruitless searching, I had to import the Black Dagger Brotherhood series myself. By the way, shipping cost more than the books did! Unfortunately the e-books than I can purchase from a SA website are even more limited than the choices Amazon affords me and, in some cases, are even MORE expensive than an actual book! And naturally Kindle borrowing is only open to US readers... I can't believe that publishers knowingly restrict the sale of their authors' work by making it close to impossible for foreign readers to have access to it. Sorry, just had to get that of my chest. :(

Oh dear, do I know what you mean! Your rant is all too understandable, Chanelle!
Many ebooks I cannot download from France either. I have to buy the paperbacks (along with the shipping fees, which are killing me) and wait up to 2 or 3 weeks to get my books here! That means I won't be a part of the monthly readings sometimes because I won't receive the book in time to read and review it... Tell me about frustration! *growls*

Gemma (bookmoodreviews) | 241 comments Well, though its not the same thing it kind of is. I ordered a book from the UK amazon sight (Before I got my kindle) any way because a UK publisher bought the rights, they cancelled the US version of the book I had preorded for months. If I were to buy the UK publishers book, it would be double the price and I'd have to wait till July!!!!

And FYI I do know a work around for the US Kindle site. PM me if you want to know what it is chantelle.

ConstantReader76a | 26 comments La Chipie, maybe we should start our own monthly readings!

Gemma (bookmoodreviews) | 241 comments I ended up buying the books from bookdepository, which has free p+p!

Hey ladies! Chanelle, that's a good idea! Why not a monthly read thread for the "poor, desperate fans living outside USA"? LOL

Gem, I also buy quite a lot of books at bookdepository. They're usually fast enough, and not too expensive. The shipping, however, is still a problem, with 2,99€ per book. :(

I like your thread! What is bookdepository?

message 2509: by [deleted user] (new)

Bookdepository is a UK online bookshop. Usually, I buy their books via Amazon, for they often offer the best prices.

Aaaah. Now I'm jealous. The shipping cost would probably be enormous. And I hate waiting :)

Oh, that one was a great read! I thoroughly enjoyed it! The main characters are beyond priceless, you'll see Jennifer!

BTW, I've just finished Dreaming of You (Gamblers, #2) by Lisa Kleypas and it was a wonderful story. You were right about that, girl! Now on to Seduce Me at Sunrise (The Hathaways, #2) by Lisa Kleypas ... Can't wait to read Merripen and Win's story...

I feel for the girls who have limited book options because they are overseas. Hugs! Feel free to start yourself a thread for discussing books available where you are.

Courtney, I hope you don't get sick, and that your family gets better soon.

Jennifer I hope you enjoy Lord of Scoundrels. La Chipie I love Dreaming of You and Seduce Me at Sunrise.

Book depository ships free world wide. I live in NZ, totally understand the frustration of purchasing books re price, but I am addicted to BD. My books end up about the NZ$10 mark (which, considering new ppb's here cost $22+NZ is fantastic).

I have also just discovered a site for secondhand books which ship free worldwide.... www.betterworldbooks.com Pretty reasonable prices as well.

I use BD for pre-orders (they work out even cheaper) and BWB when trying to fill in the gaps of my ridiculous mount TBR series.

Chanelle, the Book Depository offers free shipping worldwide. It doesn't help with the waiting problem, but at least you won't get hosed on shipping costs.

Oh Librarylass, I know Betteworlbooks too, and you're right that's a good place to look for secondhand books! I often order from them to fill the gaps in my shelves as well! ;)

Denise | 14 comments Reading The Portrait by Megan Chance Very dark book about a manic/bi-polar artist, Jonas Whitaker and Imogene carter who gets involved with Jonas so he can teach her to paint. They both have very dark and troubled pasts that are slowly coming to light. Not a light and fluffy read at all. Did I mention Jonas is missing a hand?
