I can see that Lashell.....maybe it was too urban for me? I just find the series to be too...hard? or gritty? I'm not sure what word I'd use. I will admit that I like some parts of them, especially parts of Zsadist's book. I didn't make it past Butch's book, though. I was done after that.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) Lashell wrote: "@ Megan - I loved the whole Urban feel of BDB. I'm a NYC girl and the series appealed to my love of ghetto fabulousness. I just enjoyed the all kick-assness (not a word lol) and hip hop references."

If you like urban, have you tried LA Bank's Vampire Huntress series? OMG - I was salivating over Carlos in The Bitten.

message 2303: by La La (new)

La La | 132 comments I bought book one in the series but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

message 2304: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (kittiescardigansbooks) | 207 comments I'm totally with you Megan about BDB. I did really devour the six that I've read all at once, but I think that was more because I had nothing else to do than I loved them so much. They just felt unrelentingly harsh, and kind of depressing in a way. I love me some tortured heroes, don't get me wrong, but I need some light at the end of the tunnel (as well as some non-tortured people on the wayside)

Wow, Megan. I think the Breed series is more gritty in some ways than the BDB. They have a pretty big body count and women get treated very badly by the Breed vampires. Having said that, I like the Breed books. It's just an observation on my part.

I admit, I am a huge BDB fan, although I think Ward uses too much slang at times.

message 2306: by La La (new)

La La | 132 comments See, I think that is the reason why I can't get into IAD. I feel like the series is suppose to be gritty and is just missing its mark. I like a little grit in my novel...it makes it feel more realistic. It's like the difference between watching Twilight and watching True Blood. Like Twilight, love True Blood.

I do like some dark and angst in my stories as well, Lashell. Anne Stuart is my favorite author, after all Gritty can be too gritty for me, or it can play well. Depends on the execution.

I love the IAD books. It's hard to say why, but they just hit the spot for me. Sometimes some of the heroines rub me the wrong way, but I like the overall feel of her books. And the paranormal worldbuilding is awesome to me.

I don't know Danielle...it may have to do with the way Ward writes as opposed to Adrian. The pacing, speech, and setting of the Breeds series just feels lighter to me than the BDB books. I hate the slang, I especially hate the parts with the lessors, and like Amanda said, they make me feel depressed. I don't feel the camaraderie as much with the BDB as I do with the Breeds either. Again, it may just be a personal preference to the author's style of writing.

I definitely have to disagree with you about the Breeds mistreating their women, though. I think the BDB corner the market on that one. Yuck.

I'm not talking about the Order. I'm talking about the Breed vampires, as in the Rogues and the Gen Ones and the DarkHaven vampire males. I think the Order treats their women (Breedmates) well. Some of the secondary characters (usually antagonists, not supposed to be nice guys). However, the unmated Breed warrior do go and use women for blood and sex and scrub their memories. I didn't like that about the books, although I understand the physiological necessity. There is some of that using women in the BDB books, and I'd be the first to admit. But, you don't see as much violence against women in the books overall. Again, this is not a judgment, just an observation of mine from having read both series. It's all good if you like the Breed series more. :)

Carolyn F. Megan wrote: "Did you like Vampire Diaries, Carolyn F.? I have been putting them off because I hate love triangles so very very much."

It was okay. But I've heard the 2nd book is much better so I'm going to keep reading.

~Megan~ (megadee) | 1084 comments Mod
Ohhhh, I see what you mean! I was so confused trying to think of when they had treated their women bad. You are right, the Breedmates do suffer greatly in Adrian's world. The violence is a little more evenly spread out in the other series and not so focused on women.

There were other things as well in the BDB series that turned me off...the drug use and some of the sexual things that went on. But those are just personal preferences. Pretty much everyone else I know who has read them has no problem with it.

Megan, there are things that I don't like in the BDB series too, probably some of the same things. But they are so addictive. Something about them just sucks me in. Some books are like that, I guess.

message 2313: by La La (new)

La La | 132 comments I really can't form an opinion on Breeds yet considering I'm just starting book one. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy despite its lack of ghetto fabulousness. lolol

Lashell, the Breed books definitely have a hip, urban feel. One of the things I really like about that series is how multicultural/interracial it is.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 704 comments Next for me will be If Looks Could Chill (Passion For Danger, #2) by Nina Bruhns and A Kiss to Kill (Passion For Danger, #3) by Nina Bruhns , and listening to Breaking Point (Troubleshooters, #9) by Suzanne Brockmann . I am excited for this one and I really like Max and Gina, they better end up together!

I will be writing my first book review on my new blog later on and what a better way to start the blog off with Gone Too Far by Suzanne Brockmann. I have to write about my baby Sam. I'm happy that I have reread this book. I see something different in it.

I could read about Sam all day long, why can't there be million of books about Sam Starrett? :)

message 2322: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (mrs_hf) | 164 comments Starting Surrender to a Wicked Spy (Royal Four, #2) by Celeste Bradley today! It's book two in the Royal Four series. I have one left in the Liar's Club series which is "In Transit" at the library! Yay!

I also picked up Rules of Surrender (Governess Brides, #1) by Christina Dodd from the library. I've been hearing you guys talking about her a little on here. Anyone read this book lately or remember much about her as an author?

message 2323: by ~Megan~ (new)

Christina Dodd is a hit or miss for me. My favorite book by her is Candle in the Window by Christina Dodd . It is the only one of hers that is on my keeper shelf.

message 2324: by ~Jennifer~ (new)

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) Just re-read all the Sookie Stackhouse novels in an attempt to exorcise Barrons out of my head...Eric kinda helped. :)

Now I'm re-reading the Nalini Singh Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh and Archangel's Kiss (Guild Hunter, #2) by Nalini Singh since the 3rd book is coming out the 25th. Maybe Eric and Rafael combined will do the trick?

Gone Too Far is my first review on there.

If you want to leave a comment, please leave your name that you use on here, so that I can know who has left a comment. I do screen my comments. Don't worry your comment will be posted to my blog.

I don't blog about every book that I read, but I will be stating under my Goodreads reviews, if a book has been blogged about on my blog.

Courtney, I'm a big fan of Christina Dodd, but she doesn't seem too popular on here. I keep all her books. I especially love her Governess series.

Surrender to a Wicked Spy is my favorite in the Liar's Club/Royal Four series, so far.

Amanda (kittiescardigansbooks) | 207 comments @ Courtney and Danielle - I haven't read too many of Christina Dodd's books, but the ones I have I really liked. I like both her historicals and her contemporary romantic suspense. Her paranormals are okay (too long IMO). I agree with you Danielle that she doesn't seem very well liked here on Goodreads - I'm really surprised at some of the low ratings on her historicals!

I've had good luck with her historicals, Amanda. I'm biased towards historicals, but I've liked her contemporaries pretty well too. Her older medievals were a bit dry at times, but I love her Victorians. I'm not too hard on her paranormal series. I think it takes some time to find one's feet in a new genre.

La La | 132 comments I'm currently reading To Taste Temptation (Legend of the Four Soldiers, #1) by Elizabeth Hoyt , so far it's pretty good.

message 2334: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh I really like her writing! In the same series, you'll find To Beguile a Beast (Legend of the Four Soldiers, #3) by Elizabeth Hoyt which is the third book and my favorite. The Raven Prince (Princes Trilogy, #1) by Elizabeth Hoyt was pretty good too!

I'm currently reading A Kingdom of Dreams (Westmoreland, #1) by Judith McNaught and so far it's rather entertaining.

Kingdom of Dreams was one of the first historical romance novels I ever read and an all time favorite. I've read all of Elizabeth Hoyt's books except for this series.

Carolyn F. I just finished City of Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #3) by Stacia Kane , the best of the bunch.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Man! I can't put Whisper Falls (Destiny, #3) by Toni Blake down. What a great story!

message 2339: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) I started reading Tonight or Never (Legendary Lovers) by Dara Joy which has the worst cover for a romance novel I have ever seen. I can't decide whether it's good, bad, or so-bad-it's-good! So far it's been all three.

lol Tammy. The cover is funny.

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) I held off on Archangel's Kiss re-read til tonight...needed something light and funny so I'm re-reading some Katie MacAlisters. Blow Me Down always leaves me smiling and Love in the Time of Dragons is a quick easy read. I love Baltic. I might read Hard Day's Knight or The Corset Diaries today if my son decides he wants to take a nap.

Just started The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook and am working on The Villa by Nora Roberts on audio. I'm really enjoying the audiobook on this one, but I'm so into the story it's hard to wait and find out what happens. I'm too impatient! Does anyone else have this problem with audiobooks?

message 2347: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Loves 'Em Lethal (new)

I'm not real big on audiobooks. I don't like to 'read' a story through someone else's interpretation, and at their pace.

I like to hear my own reader's voice. That's why I can't listen to an audio book. I do own some audio books though.

Jaime Rush (jaime_rush) | 59 comments I'm midway through Beyond the Night (Envy Chronicles, #1) by Joss Ware and am really enjoying it. Would love to read the others before Embrace the Night Eternal (Envy Chronicles, #2) by Joss Ware comes out tomorrow, but fear I'm too busy and behind for that. Also looking forward to Death's Sweet Embrace (Dark Brethren #2) by Tracey O'Hara coming out soon, too!

I have! It's one of my favorites. The only ones I haven't read are a handful of the Dark Ones and Steampunk. I keep them for emergencies when nothing else seems to grab my interest.
