Pamela, my brother plans on going into the marines when he gets out. A lot of the kids here do that as well. I think at least a third of this years class are moving on to do something in the military. My cousin wants to go on and be in the Air Force once she graduates.

The military is a great option and has great opportunies but it's not for everyone. Especially those who can't take orders.
There is this boy at my school and he's going into the army and he DOES NOT take orders well. He's going to have a very rude awakening when he goes to camp this summer.
I went to college right after high school, partly because it meant I could move away from home! It took me a long time to get my degree, though.

Not much to tell really. I was a shy awkward girl and didn't know what to do. We had a recruiter come to the school and I filled out a form and forgot about it. Just after graduation I was sitting at my grandmother's and discussing my options with her and the phone rang. It was the Navy recruiter and I made an appointment to go talk to him. I got off the phone and told my grandmother I might join the Navy. Haha. She was supportive but the rest of my family thought it was a joke. But I joined and proved I could make it through bootcamp. (Later, my recruiter told me even he didn't think I'd make it through bootcamp. That made me mad.) Anyway, it was difficult for me at first since I was so shy but it forced me into doing things I wouldn't have otherwise.
Pamela, that's awesome! It's great that you pushed yourself to do something you never would have done, especially when people tell you you can't.

That's awesome, Pamela. I admire that...has to be much harder for a girl than a guy. How long were you in?
What do people usually do after they leave the military? I'm predisposed to go the normal high school-college route as I don't have anything else I want to do instead.

In a word - WOW! I'm impressed. Did y'all meet there?
I made the mistake of going along with a friend to community college to study something we thought might be interesting (massotherapy) instead of doing what I really wanted to do, which was go to an out of state university and study languages. Ended up dropping out after 1 semester because I got sick and missed like a month or two worth of classes. Then I just worked and partied for 7 years until I lost my job and had my kid. Still kicking myself for not doing what I wanted when I was young and hadn't lost my knack for being a good student.
Hindsight and all that, Kit. While I don't really regret joining the Navy, I do wish I would have at least taken some college courses when I could have and bettered myself in certain areas.

Check this out!A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite.
Please listen closely and read along. This is awesome!

You're welcome, ladies!Lisa Kay, I had the same reaction; I got all teary eyed. Maybe because it goes from so cynical to so optimistic by just changing the way we look at things?
Glass 1/2 full or 1/2 empty...All in the site of the beholder. That is one awesome video...loved it...thanks, Dhestiny.

Pamela(AllHoney) wrote: "My thoughts and prayers are on Oklahoma tonight."Mine too...just so horrific. I just can't imagine.
They have certainly had a rough few days. The footage I've seen has been just...horrible. And heart-breaking.
We had the storms come into Arkansas last night. No problems here. More storms coming but they look south of here.
We got the storms here in MO as well, a few tornados touched down but not in my town thankfully. They are calling for thunderstorms but nothing severe today.Last night was an emotional night with all the warning going off and all the Moore footage on the TV. My heart breaks for all those children, as well as everyone else there.
Good to know you guys are okay up there. I do have a couple of cousins that live in Oklahoma that I need to ask my mom about. I don't have their number myself.
That is good to hear, I've seen all my Oklahoma friends posting on Facebook so I know they are all doing ok.
So happy to hear that you & your families are all safe...Just heartbreaking for the families involved especially with the 2 schools and children. It's a helpless feeling not being able to do anything other than donate.
I live on the north side of OKC. My family and home are unharmed, but that was such an emotional and devastating thing to watch. To see it happening, even if it was on the news, as it was happening was... I can't even describe. I just keep praying for those families that lost loved ones and property. So sad.
Oh, Nichole. Glad your family is safe, and my heart breaks for those who lost someone. Especially the kids. I don't even want to imagine.
I've spent so much time tonight picking out my books for this months challenge that I haven't actually read any today.
I feel your pain, Melissa. Sometimes I spend so much time here on GR looking at books I end up not reading much at all.
Glad to hear all your families are safe. My heart goes out to everyone in OKC.I try not to browse through GR too long and often because I still got books on my Kindle and Nook that I need to get to. I just keep adding, knowing I'm already backed up on my to read list.
