Melissa Busy day today, Have a parade, a choir concert, an outhouse race, and 2 birthday parties going on today with my kids!

Should be a heck of a day!

message 1452: by Melissa (new)

Melissa My son's team won 1st place in the outhouse races today at the Old Timers Day events. They got a trophy, a gold painted toilet seat, $200 for there church youth group, and each racer got a package of toilet paper and a goody bag.

It was certainly a comical race to watch!

My daughter had a good time on her float throwing candy, she was Noah's wife.

Fun day... but it was a damp one so now we are all gonna curl up with a warm blanket and read for a while. It was 40 degrees and snowy this weekend!

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14528 comments Back from the family reunion. Had a great time seeing relatives I haven't seen in a while. It was really windy, though and several plates of food went sailing. The dogs were happy though.

Kari, I don't know off-hand how many I have. I do know I have about 173 "freebies" I have NOT read. And I read in one of the threads it can hold about 10,000 books, depending on the size. At least, I think that is the number.

Wow Lisa K, that many! I guess it might depend on the actual ereader model, it just sounds like a LOT. Thanks for replying :)

Well, I seem to remember the number because two people in two different threads were complaining to Amazon about it, which surprised me.But, I've been wrong before.

message 1464: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Man, I really hate being gone for a couple days and missing so much :) I went to a nursing home and applied for a volunteer position and one of the activities I could help with was leading a book club and I thought "MAN! I need to check on the Café. Well I am probably going to be about two years behind now." so thanks guys, leaving me here in the dust ;D

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments I wish my school would allow me to access goodreads while I am there, they say it is categorized as adult. Goodreads. Categorized as ADULT! It would be hilarious if it weren't so frustrating! :P

Considering how many groups I've seen for English classes, in both HS and college on here, I find that a bit funny. Maybe even ironic. Guess it depends on the school, huh?

I don't know about you guys, but our weather has been absolutely glorious the last couple days. Saturday, not so much--scattered showers had us heading to the theater (Iron Man 3) instead of the Farmer's Market as planned--but yesterday and today? I walked three miles when I got home from work tonight. On purpose. I'd be content if it would stay low to mid-70s all summer...

message 1472: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (chibilee02) Yea...Goodreads as an adult site? Maybe it's because there are groups that have adult reading material? I know there are books mentioned that would be considered inappropriate. So maybe thats why?

message 1473: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Very true, Heather. I have seen kids doing stuff for their English classes.

message 1474: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Yeah, I find it hard to believe that it would be considered an adult site. And Heather the weather (haha that rhymed ;D) here has been AMAZING! Glad to hear you are enjoying nice weather in your neck of the woods as well!

Mary - Buried Under Romance (bur2012) | 36 comments School systems block all sorts of relatively harmless sites. A reason is likely the whole availability of chat/messaging through GR.

message 1476: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Mary, that is probably true. My school doesn't block YouTube, which I find strange. I'm not complaining though ;)

Mary - Buried Under Romance (bur2012) | 36 comments My school requires teacher passwords to watch any Youtube videos, though does not block the site itself. Go figure.

message 1478: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Okay, that's just weird that the school blocks GR but not YouTube. Have they seen some of the stuff you can watch on there??

Oh, and Jordan? Heather/weather...yeah -- first time I've ever heard that in my life. *rolls eyes* :-P~

message 1479: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Hahahaha! I am a rhyming MASTER today. I was writing a quick 5 paragraph essay today for my LA class and I wrote "Realizing I loved this class made writing exciting."

And it really is not a smart move on my school districts part. Some kids often get caught watching....questionable videos. AND ONE OF THOSE BOYS ENDED UP WITH HIS OWN PERSONAL COMPUTER! I'm sorry :D but that just doesn't make any sense.

message 1480: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Nope, doesn't make sense at all. Some things really make you wonder, don't they? LOL

message 1481: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Yeah, like if you're invisible, do you have a shadow? Mysteries like THESE are what keep me up at night! :)

message 1482: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (chibilee02) Actually glad I went to school where I didn't have to worry about so many issues, including this one, that many young people have to deal with today. School is hard enough without all the extras.

message 1483: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Yeah many adults that I have asked say they probably wouldn't have passed high school if the standards were as high as they are now. There's also a lot of extra things that go on that are super stressful, like clubs and sports.

message 1484: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments High school would have been fine, but I definitely would not get into my college alma mater now.

message 1485: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments I hear a lot of kids who say they are going to skip a year and then go to college and I just want to shake them! Don't take a year off. It's crazy. You lose everything you know from being in high school and then you try to go to college and you've forgotten everything that you've learned. It's ridiculous.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 13013 comments It's really popular in Australia as well for kids to take a "gap year" travelling, working or doing community work before taking on University or higher education. My kids didn't do it though I prefered them to finish their education first which is what my daughter did. She has her degree and is saving up to go extended travelling next year.

message 1487: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments I think it's smarter to just go and finish school after high school. Keep it fresh in your brain. And, of course, all the kids who are talking about a gap year at my school probably aren't going to be doing anything, just working or being lazy :)

message 1488: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Yeah, just sitting at home defeats the purpose. But I can understand taking a "gap" year and doing something.

message 1489: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Yeah! Like community service, traveling, anything but sitting at home!!

message 1490: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Definitely.

message 1491: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments I'd like to take a year and travel. Somewhere that *isn't* Disney World.

But I liked Disney World! ☺ lol. okay I know what you mean.

message 1493: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I would like to travel a little but probably not an entire year, I like the coming home part to much to bounce around the world that long.

message 1494: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14528 comments I find comfort in the things I have at home, like my comfy bed. Hotel beds are normally pretty awful.

message 1495: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments OMG and the pillows are worse! We often bring our own pillows when we travel.

message 1496: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14528 comments yep! Me too. I bring a couple of pillows ☺

message 1497: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Connell (tinkerer) | 271 comments Yeah! I always take my own pillow! And my legs hurt so bad whenever I go to a hotel. I usually wake up in the middle of the night because of the pain!

Heather L (wordtrix) Abigail wrote: "High school would have been fine, but I definitely would not get into my college alma mater now."

I went to a small, liberal arts college, and things have changed so much there that I probably wouldn't even consider them now. For one, the college is almost twice as big as when I graduated. Second, I was a double major in French and English, and you can't major in French anymore. You can get a minor, but no major. If I wanted a large, impersonal campus I'd have stayed home and gone to the state university. :-\

As for the travel issue...I wish. I haven't been able to afford traveling anywhere in years. :-(

message 1499: by Florence (new)

Florence Witkop Only one of our kids went to college straight from high school. The others got their degrees here and there, in pieces. Maybe a good thing because they didn't end up majoring in what they'd expected.

message 1500: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14528 comments No college for me. I joined the Navy right out of high school.
