What are you watching or have just watched?

I liked the fact that, even though there was no HEA, the core message of the film was very positive.
Also, considering the role she played Vera Farmiga had one of the best lines when she talked about pricks! :)
Very clever indeed.
I think this movie is very much like Michael Clayton in the sense that every aspect of putting the film together was really well done. The acting, the directing, the script, the photography, the editing ... excellent.
I wonder if got any awards/noms? Haven't had the time to check the list.
I've seen Twilight a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to see what the buzz was about. I have to say that this is a new generation of vampires.
I don't know who hasn't seen it yet. I don't want to spoil anyone.
Let me just say that I now have to see New Moon to see what the buzz is about.
I'm team Eric. The nerdy Asian guy. I like nerds.
Oh, and James the bad vampire is cute.

Yeah, I think some people were disappointed it wasn't HEA, but it was fitting and still hopeful. For everyone except the main character, that is! LOL.
LOL @Farmiga's line. Yes, it was an insightful movie too. Past time that was said!
I agree, all well-executed. I haven't gotten around to seeing Michael Clayton yet. Will have to check that out. :)
I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for more of Reitman's work. If this kind of dialogue is going to be his signature, I'm all for it.

Hopefully, it won't be long before I see the second one. "
Oh, I forgot it's not out until March.

I loved it. Actually I prefer Twilight. I'm in the minority. I'm not as into the werewolves as I am into the vampires. New Moon didn't have enough Edward for me. Having said that, I will be buying it in March.

Heck yeah. I loved it! Not that it matters to anyone, but this is exactly my life philosophy! :)
It's all about personal responsibility, isn't it. I loved how deceptively the line was delivered by Farmiga. Ok, so I'm biased, because I'm a huge fan of hers, but she IS quite a darn good actress. LOL
You should definitely check out Michael Clayton. Brilliant script writing by Tony Gilroy. Brilliant. I loved this film because it depicts the height of good all round movie making. Top notch acting by Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton too. Defintely one of my top 100 films of the decade.

Haven't seen New Moon, but I'm pretty sure I'm Team Edward. Taylor Lautner is not really my cup and I prefer vamps to weres too.
In my opinion, Twilight had that horror look to it. I usually can tell, when a movie is a horror movie, just by looking at it. I could be flipping a channel and come across a movie, no matter if it's in the beginning, middle or towards the end and I don't even have to see killing, etc. in it. I can tell it's a horrible movie. If I didn't know about Twilight, I would have taught that it was a horrible movie.
It had that dingy look to it. It almost looked like a bootleg movie.
Tyler Perry movies have that dingy look to them.
The movie 300 was very dingy.
I might start feeling the movie, if I watch it again. But, I don't plan on watching it anytime soon.

And Twilight was anything but horror. It was romantic and sweet. It reminded me of when I first met my husband and I was all crazy over him I couldn't sleep nor eat! :)

Twilight has a blue tone to it. Is that what you mean, Arch? I actually like that about the movie. In contrast, the brownish cast to Seven was one of the things that really disturbed me about the movie.

Danielle, I don't think it's the blue that makes the movie have that horror feel. Maybe it is.

I think you're referring to the lighting, but I could be wrong. Give me an example, Arch.
Eugenia, I never care to watch Seven ever again! It made me feel sick inside. I hate when movies do that.

Okay, let me name a few horror movies.
Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday The 13th
Jeeper Creepers (Sp?)
Halloween
Candy Man
If I didn't know these were horror movies and I was flipping the channel I could tell it's horror. I came across a lot of horror movies by flipping the channel. It had the horror feel to it and when I've clicked on my guide button, I was right.
It's the way the movie look.
It's not really the color of the movie. It's the way the movie looks. They have that horror movie look.
If you own any of the movies that I mentioned above or any other horror movies. Watch them, even if it's for five minutes. See what I am talking about. They all look alike.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean then. Is it the pacing, the way the actors speak their lines? The music?
I don't watch those kinds of movies above. I don't like slasher and blood and guts movies. I like the vampires, ghosts, and werewolf movies. I like a monster movie that's more suspenseful than gross. I hate serial killer movies.

Danielle,
List movies that you have.
Do you have any of the following movies:
1. American Werewolf in London or Paris - I have AW In Parris
2. Wolf - I recorded this movie the other day
3. Gothika
4. The Lost Boys? I have this movie
I'm not a horror fan. But, I do have a few horror movies. I don't even watch the Chill channel. I have that channel blocked.
If you don't have the above movies. Please share with me the name of some of your horror movies.

Gothika (well, my mom has it), The Lost Boys, The Frighteners, Sleepy Hollow, The Last Man on Earth, The Wolf Man, The Mummy (both old versions and newer versions), Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Dracula (several versions). I might have a few more, but they aren't coming to mind. I like the older horror movies more. Less blood and guts.
I like to watch Chiller, although I don't watch all the movies on there.

Okay, when you get a chance Danielle. Watch like five minutes of Gothika, The Lost Boys and Twilight and see if you can see what I am talking about. They look alike. I don't know if it's a horror cam, but something makes them all appear to look alike to me.
After checking them out, come tell me if you see what I am talking about.

It's something and I can always tell when a movie is horror.
I don't know if any of you have seen a movie that has been burnt from a computer. I call them bootleg movies. Anyway, they have a certain look. They don't look like a brand new copy of the movie or even if you see the movie at the movies.
Well, Tyler Perry movies have that same look. Maybe it's just me.

That sounds like film quality.
I guess this is the way I would process what makes a movie have a horror vibe:
1) dark or unsettling lighting
2) atmospheric music
3) unconventional camera angles or shooting
4) sharp edits
5) poor film quality (often intentional)
Those are the things that are characteristic in a dark/suspsense/horror movie, that I think of.

I think that is a common device to give a movie that dreary, dark look.
I haven't really studied Tyler Perry's movies that well, although I noticed that there is a tendency to overact in his movies. JMO.

This film is not for the faint-hearted. It pulls at your emotions and deals with sexual abuse, addiction and racism. So it's an eye opener and truly amazing.
Best Wishes!

I agree with what you said about George Clooney. He's not drop dead gorgeous anymore but he used to be when he was younger. What's so sexy about him to me is his smile. He has a beautiful smile and I like the way those wrinkles under his eyes pop up when he smiles. He's also very charming. But I don't know how ol' George will look in about five years, LOL! Doesn't seem like age is treating him well.
I've been obsessed with Stephen Dorff for over ten years though so I might be biased against anyone(including George) who isn't him, LOL!
Best Wishes!

Has anyone seen Couples Retreat? I think that's the name of the movie. If it came on Starz, I would watch it.

The lady who plays Precious's mom should get an Oscar for her performance. She completely owned her scenes! I know I've seen her in other productions, but I can't remember which. Sidibe also did a great job.
This movie is dark as hell but I'm VERY impressed with the lead performances in this film. THIS is the type of dramatic movie featuring black actors (esp women) we need to see more of. I loved this film because of the opportunity it provided the actors to shine. Even Mariah Carey (who looked nothing like herself, I might add!) was quite memorable in her small role.
I hope the Academy didn't snub this one. There's a lot of excellent work here.

Davina, the woman that played Precious mother is comedy/talk show host. Monique/Mo'Nique. If you look her up, you will see it spelled both ways, but name is Monique and spelt like that in her imdb bio.

Re: Clooney, I didn't find him attractive even when he was young, unfortunately. He's just doesn't do much for me, though I do agree he has a very nice smile. And actually, I prefer to look at him as he is now than when he was younger. I think age is treating him quite well. He looks very manly and distinguished. I love that. I really can't stand to see when a man is too pretty or metrosexual-ish! LOL
I'm a Stephen Dorff fan too, SD. Have you seen him in Felon? That's the last film I saw him in and he didn't do too shabbily although that guy from Oz (something or another Perrineau) pretty much owned the film with his performance, imo. You should definitely check it out if you're a die hard Dorff and if you love prison flicks like me! :)

It's tough trying to decide between Farmiga and Monique for Best Supporting Actress, though. They both did so well! I'd be happy to see either of them win.
For best actress, I definitely want Gabourey Sibide to win, though she more than likely won't (if she does I'll wholeheartedly eat my words, but hey it's the academy we're talking about here ... unknown black actress up against industry heavyweights like Bullock, Mirren and Streep for one of the whitest categories in the Awards...? I'll believe it when I see it. Not because Sidibe didn't do exceptionally well, but it all goes back to our Vanity Fair discussion). If it was for the supporting role, I'd have more faith. The Academy has a history of promoting actors of colour as supporting cast, not leads. But, anyway, we'll see.
I'm a Streep fan, but I won't be sad if she doesn't win. She has had her moment. Let someone else shine for a while. Hopefully that will be Sidibe because she was quite good as Precious. I don't like Bullock. Mirren already has an Oscar under her belt for The Queen and I don't know who Carey Mulligan is.
I have to say I checked out the cast and crew for Precious. Predominately black in all the major roles and functions. I'm very pleased about this. Regardless of how we may personally feel about the film and its story, this is exactly the type of dramatic, powerful and well-layered movie black Hollywood needs to produce more of. Why do films like these only come around once in a blue moon? Clearly the resources, if not readily available, can be shored up.
Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey executive produced. Can't say I'm surprised, not only do they have the funds to back a project, but the themes of the film are very dear to OW's heart. She always backs these sort of projects, ones that deal with (child) abuse and female empowerment. Good stuff. I'm glad I watched this film. I'm not trying to be boastful (or a know-it-all as some like to accuse me of), but it proves exactly the point I was trying to make on the Vanity Fair thread. If black talent can be diversified into all areas of film making, it can only lead one way for (black) minorities in Hollywood: up. And the academy may be biased like the rest of the industry, but some times (many times) they'll get it right. If I remember correctly Precious nabbed 6 Academy Award nominations, all for the most important aspects of putting a film together: Acting, Directing, Screenwriting, Editing as well as Film of the Year!
I don't believe that black people should be considered to win an award, if they star in an all black movie.
It's a fact that if a black person is nominated and her or she is the only black person in that catergory that he or she has 2% of winning the award.
Blacks are overlooked for awards a lot, no matter how great of a performance they have done.
If I am not mistaken, I've seen where Morgan Freeman is going up against George Clooney and other whites. Morgan is a good actor, but I could be wrong, but most like it, he's not getting the award. It's going to Clooney. All, because he's Clooney. I'm not a fan of either men. But, I know of Morgan's work. I have seen him in movies. George never pulled my eyes to his movies. I use to watch ER back in the day, when he was on it. He wasn't a favorite doctor of mine.
I'm not saying that the man can't act or anything like that, but in my opinion, the light shines on his a lot, because of who he is. Thankgoodness his acting abilities went further than the Facts of Life.
I'm glad that there's an award for only black people. There, the black actors and actresses has a chance of winning.
It's sad, but it's true. Hollywood, don't like to recognize people of color, unless they are starring in an all Black, Indian, Latino, etc. show.
Hollywood needs a lesson in history.

In the best actress category, Bullock is the odds on favorite. But I am not 100% sure she'll get it. People liked the BlindSide and all, but a lot of people are scratching their heads about the Oscar-worthiness of the movie. Seriously. For that award I wouldn't mind if anyone but Bullock or Streep won. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Meryl Streep, but at this point I think she is getting votes because she is MERYL STREEP (capital letters!!)
Lee Daniels is obviously a great director. Has anyone seen Gabby Sibide on the various talk shows? The girl is a riot. She is so bubbly and vivacious. She is so unlike Precious that she totally deserves that Oscar! This is the same guy that helped net Halle her Oscar. If he can also get Gabby as Best Actress oscar, that will be history making indeed. And if that doesn't get him some clout in H-Wood, then it really is f'd up. Lol.
Last night I saw Up In The Air with George Clooney and Vera Farmiga.
I didn't expect to like it, but I did. Great all around performances and fairly good direction.
I decided to see this movie because I'm a Vera Farmiga fan. I find her to be a very compelling actress and I love her presence. I'm not a Clooney fan. He looks great for his age and I love his classic manliness, but I don't really find him attractive.
He was great in this movie though. In my opinion, one of his best performances in long while.
