Davina D. | 796 comments I've given it some thought and I've decided that I want to see Monique win. One reason is that black actors are rarely nominated, and more so rarely do they win, so she should definitely get it. This certainly wouldn't be a token win, but one she'd wholly deserve.

Vera Farmiga is on the fast track up, she's a wickedly talented actress and I'm sure she can look forward to many more noms in the future. Though Monique is just as talented, we all know she won't get the same opportunities Vera will as her career progresses.

Another reason is that while I do love Vera and she was great in Up in the Air, Monique's performance was more memorable, decidedly more profound.

I agree that more times than not Clooney and Streep only get nominated because they're Clooney and Streep. I can understand it with Streep because the woman is truly talented (I've never seen a film with her where one performance remotely resembles another of her performances). She is quite simply amazing. I haven't seen Julie and Julia, but I'd bet money that she did well enough to deserve the nom. However, under these circumstances, if you're an actress like Streep who has won every award there is to win under the sun, I think its okay to give other people a chance to shine.

As for Clooney the only films I've seen him do a really good job in are Michael Clayton and Up in the Air. Otherwise he's been more of a brand, rather than a talent.

I'm not much of Sandra Bullock fan. I do not want her to win. If Gabourey Sidibe doesn't win, I want to see someone else get it. The Mulligan person perhaps since this is probably her first nomination. Or even Mirren.

Sweet T wrote:"Arch, I think you should give the Twilight movie another shot. It's not a horror movie. It has like one real fight scene, and an implied attack...but that's it. It's really a young adult paranormal romance movie. I think the lighting gives it a really funny feel. I'm so glad they didn't use that lighting for New Moon which will be out on DVD March 20. I might actually go to the Borders midnight release party since it's on a Friday this time."

First off, I want to say hello Sweet T. Haven't seen you in a while. WB.

I don't think that Twilight is a horror movie. It just has that horror look to it.

I might watch it again, soon.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Hi Davina,

I haven't seen Felon yet but I plan to! I love Stephen and I watch him in anything. I think even his biggest fans can agree, he doesn't make the best film choices, LOL! He's picked some duds but I still love him and I try to watch all his films! I have him wallpapered all over my computer and TONS of his pictures. I even have him on my bedroom wall. I tell you, I would stalk this man if I wasn't so lazy, LOL! He better be glad he doesn't live in Houston and if he EVER comes here, I can't be responsible for my actions, LOL!

Best Wishes!

Davina D. | 796 comments I recently saw The Box with Cameron Diaz and Frank Langella. I like Langella. He's an awesome actor. Loved him as Nixon in Frost/Nixon, both the film and the stage performance. Too bad I found The Box to be a bit boring. The plot was intriguing, but still a little thin, imo. Also for some reason I think it would have been better if they'd set the movie today rather than in the 70s. Don't really know why, it's just a vibe I got whilst watching the film.

Tonight I'm going to watch Get Rich or Die Tryin' with Curtis Jackson and Terrence Howard. My son gave me this to watch because he's a fan of 50 cent who's apparently in the movie as well. I liked 8 Mile, so I think I'll like this one too even though I'm not rap's biggest fan.

Also Tyler Perry's I CAN BE BAD ALL BY MYSELF.

The movie is called, I Can Do Bad All By Myself.

I could be wrong, but according to the previews, the movie looks like it took a direction road from the play.

Davina D. | 796 comments new_user wrote: "How was I Can Do Bad All by Myself? As good as Why Did I Get Married?"

No, I wouldn't say that. Why Did I Get Married was definitely more plot heavy, imo, but I Can Do Bad All By Myself was fun while it lasted. Taraji P. Henson was gorgeous in this film. Not that that she isn't normally, but the production obviously had a good costume design. Lots of bright, bold colours and with Taraji's flawless chocolate skin the colours just exploded. Loved it. She and Adam Rodriguez had a lot of chemistry, I wish they'd've gotten it on more often! :)

Oh, and it may be funny coming from me, considering our recent religion discussion, but I really liked the church scenes in this movie. Very moving.

Also watched and enjoyed Get Rich & Die Tryin'. Learnt something too. I did not know 50 cent and Curtis Jackson were the same person! But now I do ... lol

I saw The Wolfman at the movies Sunday. Very good movie. A bit gory, but fun and angsty at the same time. It made my Victorian-loving heart glad. Awesome scenery and costumes. Benicio was very good, and it reinvigorated my crush on him. He's not handsome, but there's something about him. I found myself liking Emily Blunt a lot. She's not drop dead gorgeous, but she's got a luminosity about her. I hope to see her in more period movies. She does them very well. Of course, Anthony Hopkins was good as always (he's my old guy crush).

I also saw Paranormal Activity on DVD on Sunday. It was good. Kind of sad, because of some of the choices that were made by the couple, particularly Micah. Creepy, but not really scary, like I thought it would be.

and, I rewatched Transporter 3 on Saturday. I love that movie. It's very stylish, and there was some good chemistry between Jason Statham and his co-star (don't remember the actress's name right now).

message 65: by Davina (new)

Davina D. | 796 comments I have to catch The Wolfman for all the reasons you stated. I loved the way you described Benny -- that's exactly the way I feel about him. He's got this rough, manly face that I can't get enough of and those eyes...

I'm also a Emily Blunt, fell in love with her in The Devil Wears Prada; and I simply adore Sir Anthony. He's one of my all time favourite old guy actors.

I saw Paranormal Activity too. Agree that it isn't that scary, but creepy as heck in parts. I was very reassured to have my husband sleeping next to me after seeing it.

We don't have a monthly reading challenge, but it's a good idea. I think I will start a separate thread to discuss starting one.

If you mean the group book discussion, it's been lead by volunteers in the past. Participation is somewhat spotty, at best. But I'm not surprised because of the specificity of our genre.

Did I answer your question, Sweet T?

I think my mother appreciates Twilight at least equally if not more than New Moon. I thought New Moon was very good, but I liked the intimacy and the focus on Bella and Edward's relationship in Twilight. That's what drew me into this series.

Davina D. | 796 comments Recently saw Invictus - was not overly impressed with the story which I thought was rather thin. So Mandela supported the majority white SA rugby team, so what? I felt like the story was a tad too thin to be a movie.

message 77: by new_user (new)

new_user I haven't seen Law Abiding Citizen yet. Plan to. I saw Valentine's Day. That was cute. There were actually some funny moments that weren't featured in the trailers, and the way the movie was structured, with several storylines and even a mystery here or there, made it more interesting than the typical romcom too.

I saw the ending of Invictus and I thought it was laughable. A movie about Mandela and it still manages to be all about white people. LMAO. It just brought to mind Paul Mooney's segment on the Chapelle show. Anyone seen that?

Indeed. I found that rather peculiar as well. All throughout the show, I kept thinking "so many interesting aspects of Mandela's life that could have been told and Eastwood chose this?"

I actually do believe Eastwood is a closet racist as Spike Lee accused him of. Some of the comments he usually makes regarding race are just queer. In many of his movies that do feature blacks they're on the periphery and in films where they're actually supposed to take centre stage, for eg Invictus, the show still manages to be -- at its core -- about white people. Amazing.

Davina D. | 796 comments So how does everyone feel about the Oscar wins?

I saw Crazy Hearts and talk about one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. I did not enjoy that film at all. I can't even remember Bridge's performance. I'm not a Clooney fan, but I wanted him to win this category.

Monique won and that's fantastic! To be completely honest I was up in the air about whether she'd get the statue or not. The academy has a tendency to snub actors who are most favoured by a wider audience (especially when the actor happens to be black). I wasn't surprised that she won, though. She definitely deserved it. And I like her too. She's clearly a woman who doesn't mince her words.

Christoph Waltz, the german actor who portrayed a chillingly brutal Nazi officer in Inglorious Basterds, won for the supporting male role as well. I loved his performance in IB. He was my favourite for that category and I'm so pleased he got it.

My favourites for best director were James Cameron and Lee Daniels, but Katherine Bigelow is a worthy winner.

Overall, I'm pleased with the Academy's picks. The actor I most wanted to see win, won so I'm happy.

I'm so jazzed to see Kathryn Bigelow win. I was rooting for her and James Cameron because they've been my faves in SF movies and I'm a bit biased because I think she deserved some recognition for Strange Days. Was hoping for an Avatar sweep and if it would have won, it would be a rarity since the Academy doesn't see genre films as award worthy. :-/

I'm hoping with Kathryn's win there will be a rise in female directors and more females behind the scenes in the industry. Goodness knows we certainly need it!

Yolonda | 406 comments To me the Oscars were mostly predictable with no upsets. If anyone heard any of the buzz in the weeks leading up to it, then the expected winners took home the trophy. It was just eh, but the winners were deserving. I was glad of the acknowledgment to Gabby Sidebe by Sandra Bullock. I thought it was sweet to use her own time to praise a new young talent.

I am pretty pleased too, although like Loni said, no real upsets. The problem is that there are so many awards before the Oscars where the same people are all voting that the Oscars pretty much lose their suspense.

For Oscar voting purposes Academy members can only nominate in their occupational category (actors nominate actors, writers nominate writers, directors nominate directors etc.). Everybody gets to vote in all the categories (except some technical ones). But actors make up the biggest voting bloc. So even though a lot of people point to the Golden Globes as the predictor of who will win, that is not necessarily true. The SAG awards is the best predictor of who will win. And all the actors who won at the SAGs won in the same categories at the Oscars.

I think the only thing that can maintain some real suspense is best picture. Because while all actors can vote on the SAGs only Academy Members can vote on the Oscars so that can skew a bit. And truthfully I was a bit shocked that The Hurt Locker won. I thought Avatar would take it (and honestly I think it was a stunning cinematic achievement and should have won). But then I think in that case politics did play a HUGE part.

And that brings me to Mo'Nique. Loved her win. Loved her speech. She is right, it should be about the performance and not about the politics. She got a lot of grief for not campaigning for the Oscars. Her reasons for not doing so were very well articulated and quite valid. Good for her. And I am glad she zinged, because very often the Oscars are extremely political.

And I desperately want Gabby Sidibe to go on and do more work. All through the award season whenever I have seen her do any interviews, she has been an utter delight! So funny and fresh and very confident in herself.

TinaNoir | 1456 comments OMG, Eugenia, that Song for Prudence 'Kanye West' moment is even more insane than you think. That woman who ran up there and interrupted that guy's speech is having a major feud with him. She claims that his mother tried to trip her with a cane so she couldn't make it to the podium!

Salon has an article about it here http://www.salon.com/entertainment/mo....

Man, I wish that had panned to the audience so we could see cane lady trying to trip Crazy Kanye lady instead of staying on George Clooney's Mr. Grumpy face all night. Lol.

I knew it was Richard Matheson, who normally writes horror/suspense. I assumed The Box was suspense. Thanks for the 411.

What did you like about Green Zone, NU?

message 91: by new_user (last edited Mar 15, 2010 03:51PM) (new)

new_user Yeah, The Box was actually better than I thought because I expected it to be a suspense version of The Saw or something with moral dilemmas like, would you like your neighbor to save yourself or something like that. It's actually more broad though, with a little bit of a message about humanity. Although there was a sexist detail in there... I wonder if that was in the original short story.

I liked Green Zone's realism. It said some things that needed to be said about the Iraq War, particularly about the events leading up to. Some critics have mentioned that these things have already been said, but if that's true I haven't seen it printed or recorded. No one's said aloud that there were mistakes made as far as I can see. Not that the movie was perfect, because I think the production might have been rushed/budgeted, but I still thought it was good. I heard a guy when I was leaving the theater saying something about how he didn't like the way the military was portrayed. The truth hurts. It didn't paint anyone in a rosy light. It was honest.

Davina D. | 796 comments I've recently seen:

Avatar - really liked this one, if a bit predictable. I must say I certainly don't mind seeing more of the lovely Mr. Worthington! :)

The Road - decent movie, amazing acting, but gosh was this depressing. Was a downer alright. This one had me bawling my eyes out. Even my husband got choked up and that never happens!

Shutter Island - somewhat predictable psychological thriller, but okay. Not a Leo fan, love Mark Ruffalo though.

New Moon - liked, was okay. Definitely Team Edward, although Jacob's new body was HAWT! I didn't realise Bella's loquacious, air-headed friend was the girl who starred in Up in the Air. Goodness, what's her name? She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress alongside Vera Farmiga at this year's Oscars. Anyway, it was a nice surprise. I think I like her.

Daybreakers - I agree with my son. Cheesy, really awkward acting. And far too much meat.

message 93: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL! I didn't realize that was her either. I can't believe that. She had the character down pat in Up in the Air though. I'm impressed, from schoolgirl to mature career woman. Daybreakers was kinda a comic book put to film, I thought. There may have been cheese, but it was deliberate. Now New Moon had some awkward acting, LOL.

It was nowhere near as funny as The Wedding Crashers, which I thought was hilarious. Isla Fisher alone was hysterical. But it did have it's charm and the structure of the film made it better than it could have been. I love Ed Helms' (the dentist) character on The Office so he was the best part for me.
