Elizabeth (Alaska) What fictional character would you like as your neighbor, or friend, or leading citizen of your community?

message 2: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Feb 02, 2010 12:34PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) The idea for this thread came to me last night as I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird. I would be so honored if Atticus Finch were a living in my town.

message 3: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) Skeeter and Aibileen from The Help, Marion from Woman in White, and Dagny from Atlas Shrugged are just a few that immediately come to mind.

message 4: by Grace (new)

Grace (graycie) | 8 comments I will second Marian from Woman in White. She is such a strong, clever and dependable woman. With her as your friend/neighbor, you've got nothing to worry about.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Marian had so much common sense and was so loyal. Good choice!

message 6: by Tania (new)

Tania (kiwireader) Lisbeth Salander from the Millenuim Trilogy and Sonchai Jitpleecheep from Bangkok 8 series...

message 7: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mettakaruna) This is such a good question. I need to give it some thought. I will be back. I do have to second Skeeter and Aibileen from The Help. Can I also pick people from Nonfiction works or is that breaking the rules?

Elizabeth (Alaska) LOL Mandy Sue - rules? I just thought fiction because you couldn't really meet them, but if you have a hankerin' for maybe a dead person who actually lived . . .

message 9: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mettakaruna) Exactly, Elizabeth... Some have passed away!! lol

message 10: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Oh so many! Atticus and the gang, Scarlett and Rhett (OK, actually, I'd rather BE Scarlett, but that's a different question), Yossarian, and the Ya-Yas. I'll start with those.

message 11: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) Great question!
I'll get back to you on that.

message 12: by SarahSaysRead (new)

SarahSaysRead Claire and Jamie Fraser from the Outlander books would be awesome people to have in a community.
Hmmmm... Also Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy from P&P, and the Waverley girls from Garden Spells...

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of anyone else...

message 13: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) Olive Kitteridge is definitely one.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rose wrote: "Olive Kitteridge is definitely one."

Can you imagine being one of Olive's students?

message 15: by Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (last edited Feb 05, 2010 08:04AM) (new)

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Great question Elizabeth! First that came to mind are the women of The Secret Life of Bees. I would love to know those women. I'm going to give this more thought & see who else I come up with.

message 16: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) So many books, so many amazing characters. It's hard to choose. Here is one of my favorite quotes:

"Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul."
— Joyce Carol Oates

message 17: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Thanks for sharing this great quote Rose!

message 18: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Honaker (carriehonaker) | 99 comments Definitely Isola and Elizabeth from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, amazing women! Who knew the science of reading head bumps could be so enlightening and entertaining!

Barb H (barbhh) Rose wrote: "So many books, so many amazing characters. It's hard to choose. Here is one of my favorite quotes:

Wonderful quote, Rose!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Pippi Longstocking and Harriet M. Welsch (Harriet the Spy) - for starters.

Also Skeeter, Aibileen, Minny and Mae Mobley from THE HELP.

And too many others to list!

message 21: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments BeBe Loudermilk from Mary Kay Andrew's books "Savannah Breeze" and "Savannah Blues" would be fun to have as a neighbor and a friend!

And I agree with Aibeleen from "The Help"!

message 22: by Roberta (new)

Roberta (wwwgoodreadscomrooonuma) | 59 comments Either Aibeleen or one of the main characters from To Kill a Mocking Bird/Where the Red Fern Grows.

message 23: by Angela (new)

Angela Holland (bookaunt) I would like to also meet Jaime and Claire.

I would also like to meet Becky Bloomwood fromm Confessions of a Shopaholic

message 24: by AJ (new)

AJ (anersword) | 121 comments Neighbor: Katniss's mom! The Hunger Games

Friend: Lisbeth, cause I find her fascinating. And smart. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Leading citizen: Aaragon! The Return of the King

Good question

message 25: by Marsha (new)

Marsha (earthmarsha) | 1586 comments Oooh, Aragorn! Not sure I'd be able to keep my hands off him. But not the Viggo Mortensen version, I'm afraid. He doesn't do it for me, and he's not the way I pictured Aragorn all these years.

Rhett Butler would be a fascinating friend. And I wouldn't mind hanging out with the protagonist of The Gargoyle. I liked his sense of humor.

message 26: by AJ (new)

AJ (anersword) | 121 comments Viggo didn't do it for you??? I'm impressed you were able to deflect his charm.

message 27: by LizH (new)

LizH (liz_h) | 15 comments What about Rourke from J.D. Robb's In Death series? Yum!

message 28: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments When I was moving around and having to meet new friends, the characters in the books were able to accompany me. So I sorta wished some characters appeared in RL in some fashion (such as someone had those good qualities).

Classmate: Anne from Anne of Green Gables.
Friends: All the babysitters from The Baby Sitter's Club - Kristy's Great Idea

Nowadays, I'd like to meet:
Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice
Anne & Cpt Wentworth from Persuasion
The girls from The Help and Guernsey Lit
Morgaine from The Mists of Avalon

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd love to meet some of the sleuths I read about - Harry Bosch, Jesse Stone, Sunny Randall, Spenser, Irene Kelly, Charlotte McNally.

message 30: by Marsha (new)

Marsha (earthmarsha) | 1586 comments Speaking of sleuths, I'd like to hang out with Travis McGee.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) I'd love to know Jo March from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. She was my inspiration to become a writer.

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments I would love to know Bella from TWILIGHT so I can slap her !

message 35: by Kat (new)

Kat (deskat) I too would like to slap Bella!! And also Becky Bloomwood..

But I'd love to have Atticus as a neighbor or friend as well... and Mme Precious Ramotswe from the No1. Ladies Detective Agency seried. Can't go wrong with her as a neighbor!

message 36: by Kimberley ❤️ (new)

Kimberley ❤️ I agree with the Bella comment as her character is infuriating and not a good example for young girls.

message 37: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (sjhensley) | 101 comments Stephanie Plum--and her grandma!

message 38: by Amanda (last edited Mar 10, 2010 05:45AM) (new)

Amanda Completely agree with you all on slapping Bella! Especially in the third book, I could barely get through it I disliked her so much.

On a different note, I would love to meet the women from Julia's Chocolates! They would be such fun as neighbors!

message 39: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Girls want Queen Bees or emos.

Dru wrote: "Okay, having just read Saving Cece Honeycutt, I would have to say that I want to know Aunt Tootie - heck, I'd like to BE related to Aunt Tootie...."

She really is a sweetheart! :)

I'd love to know Oletta (from Saving CeeCee...)!

Me too - I loved Oletta! She would be fun to see in a film

message 43: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
Aw, come on all you Bella slappers. :o)
Were none of you clumsy, stubborn, moody teenagers, feeling like you didn't fit in with your surroundings, who would have loved it to have a dreamy guy give you his undivided attention! LOL
Can't you cut the girl just a little slack? :o)

You can't all have been the most popular, straight-A, perfect looking, cheerleader girls in your school, now were you? LOL!

message 44: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments LOL, Sheila!

message 45: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (sjhensley) | 101 comments Speaking of Bella, Alice would be really fun to hang out with!

message 46: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Sheila, that's exactly why I slogged thru all the Twilight series. I remember that teenaged angst and longing for the perfect guy. Who would have had to be totally fictional to satisfy the absolute craving for attention and validation I needed at that age. Oh, and I love wolves. :o)

message 47: by AJ (new)

AJ (anersword) | 121 comments I really liked Bella, I thought that all the men around her were infuriating and bad examples - Edward was too controlling and Jacob was too aggressive. She herself seemed like she needed a strong female to help her out and provide some much needed guidance, especially with the men in her life (her father laughs at her broken hand after she tells him she was fending off unwanted advances??? FOR SHAME). Why did she bother you?

message 48: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Jo March from Little Women/Little Men and Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice

message 49: by Britt☮ (new)

Britt☮ (genki_bee) In my fictional town, I'd have the Boatwright sisters for neighbors (The Secret Life of Bees), Georgia Nicolson for a best friend (Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson), and Lysistrata for mayor (Lysistrata)!

message 50: by Kate (new)

Kate | 106 comments I would like to have a drink and talk with Lisbeth Salander from the Millennium trilogy. Beyond that, it is too hard to choose.

I would like to meet Bella so I could politely tell her that one day she was going to wake up and realize that boys aren't everything and you shouldn't pin your identity to one.
