Alisa (mstaz) Mark, I too am a seafood fan and have to agree the cold water fish are the best.

message 222: by Mark (new)

Mark Mortensen Jill, coming from West Virginia you ought to enjoy another favorite singer of mine, John Denver.

message 223: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) You are right, Mark. "Country Roads" is played at each WVU football and basketball game and when you see five year old children singing along, you know what an effect that song had on our state. There had been a move by the state legislature to have it named as the state song.....but that didn't go anywhere.

Jill wrote: "Even the French word for eggplant beautiful.....aubergine."

Aubergine sounds much nicer than eggplant (which to me sounds as if nobody was able to come up with a better idea at the time. Probably some frustrated British sailor fresh from the boat: "Aye mate, look a'ere. It's eggs 'angin' frum the trees!" - smile!).

Thank goodness many languages adopted Aubergine.

That being said, why hasn't anyone come up with a better name for Mache salad (also from the French)? Mache to me sounds like dirt. No respect.
Since it's my favorite salad I refuse to give it a dirt name (smile).
Veldsla (Dutch) or Feldsalat (German) sounds boring as hell - but better than dirt.

Mark Mortensen For dog lovers tonight is the final night of the Westminster Dog Show. Our family used to show a Flat Coat Retriever and now own a Gordon Setter, which is the same breed Daniel Webster used to own. National Geographic has a nice article on dogs this month.

message 239: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Are you showing your Gordon, Mark? I love the Westminster and I believe they have added some breeds to the AKC register.....so maybe they will show up there.

message 240: by Mark (new)

Mark Mortensen Jill, no we do not show this Gordon. Although she is a purebred we fell in love with the runt of the litter. She is a great field dog and displays an amazing natural ability at flushing birds bounding through tall grass. I should have stated that George Blunt and Daniel Webster brought the first two Gordon Setter’s to America back in 1842. message 241: by Bea (new)

Bea | 1830 comments Nice to get to know you, Mark.

Interesting that Daniel Webster imported the Gordon Setters.

Daniel Webster Daniel Webster

(Psst! I think the dictionary name derives from Noah, Daniel's cousin.)

message 242: by Mark (new)

Mark Mortensen Bea, you were kind. Rather than "I think", you are certainly correct it was Noah. I was looking forward to reading Robert V. Remini’s book “Daniel Webster: The Man and His Time”, but it appears I should read it sooner rather than later. I have dined several times at the Daniel Webster Inn on Cape Cod and could say a few nice words about my experiences, but before say much more I need to read his biography.
