Are you talking about Tasmania Michael?

message 157: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Veal Marsala, Laphroigh, and Johnny Depp - that is quite a robust line-up of favorites you've got going there!

Katherine Hepburn, such a great one. Have you read her autobiography?

I had a long haired cat once - half Himalayan and half Persian (blue eyes). Good for you with the flying. And of course in no special order Bach and pizza.

message 164: by Jason (new)

Jason (jasonct) | 53 comments Hi Alisa,

I have indeed read

Me Stories of My Life by Katharine Hepburn by Katharine Hepburn Katharine Hepburn a bunch of years ago when it first came out in paperback.

I enjoy that she was a resident of my state and her family played a part in the history of Hartford. Such an interesting lady.

I've never been to Argentina. Just from what I've read, some people I know and the stories I hear, I think I could be very happy living there. I'll confess I do sometimes dream what it would be like to live in all these foreign countries I love.

message 165: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Hi Jason, I wanted to say hello since you came on board. You are doing a great job in the audio portion of the group.

message 166: by [deleted user] (new)

1. Food: Italian food, especially lasagna and tiramisu
2. Non-alcoholic beverages: Fountain ("Mexican") Coca-Cola w/Cherry syrup - "Mexican" refers to the non-HFCS version of Coke. It's made with cane sugar instead.
3. Alcoholic beverages: Mojitos, Dark & Stormys, Dr. Nuts (Dr. Peppers with Amaraetto), Highland Park Scotch (it's a blended whisky) and single-malts that have been slightly warmed like a brandy
4. Band/singer: Depending on my mood, this could be anything from Monteverdi to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones!
5. Actor: Right now I'm going through a Colin Firth phase :-)
6. Season: I love both really hot summer days near the ocean and really snowy days in the winter. In the spring and fall, it turns out I'm allergic to near almost everything so it's no fun at all!
7. Terrain: Ocean & beaches, all varieties, anytime, anywhere.
8. Cars: 1989 Chevy Blazer (one of the last true SUVs out there before they got all dressed up;) 1979 Camaro Berlinetta (8 cylinders - Anyone who has said the Camaros had no pick-up, never drove one of these! It could hold it's own against the Corvettes of its time) and, the 1969 Camaro SS Sport (a true muscle car.)
9. Animal: Dogs, the bigger the better! I'm currently in love with my two lab mixes, a "blonde" lab and a black lab. They are great with kids and enjoy rough-housing. There is something great about seeing them run crazy at the dog park :-)
10. Activities: Reading, research, going to museums and historical sites, ferreting out items that have connections to what I've read...; beach combing, sunbathing; Two activities that I loved that have fallen by the wayside and would like to get back into are skiing and photography.

message 167: by Jason (new)

Jason (jasonct) | 53 comments Bentley - Aren't blue eyes on a cat something?!
Flying is one of those things that could be considered spiritual, it's a great pastime.

Brian - Thanks for the welcome! The audio group is a work in progress, but I'm having fun and it's certainly made me experience more of the History group which I'm greatly enjoying.

Tanya - I had a Chevy Nova with a 350 8cyl 4 barrel carb. and man I loved that car. Of course when you really stepped on the gas you could see the gas needle move, but a fun car nonetheless.

Goodness never had doctor pepper with amaretto either - I am learning all sorts of new things.

Love big dogs too.

message 170: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Jason,
Yeah, there's nothing like a 350-block/8! They are soooo politically incorrect now; but I loved the power and speed!

@Bentley

Every once in awhile, you'll see Mexican Cokes appear in grocery wholesalers. You have to move fast though because they always sell quickly! I once saw two palettes stripped in two hours (and yeah, I got mine!) A couple of months ago, Dr. Pepper also had "Old School" Dr. Pepper out in retail grocery stores (sugar instead of HFCS) and I grabbed a case; but I haven't seen it since :-(
Most countries outside of the US will not allow HFCS in foods imported.

The Dr. Nuts were inspired from reading

The Neon Rain A Dave Robicheaux Novel by James Lee Burke by James Lee Burke James Lee Burke

In the book, the protag Dave Robicheaux waxes nostalgic about the original soda, Dr. Nut which had an almond flavor to it. He speculates that's why Southerners tend to like Dr. Pepper so much. The drink is sweet; but it does go great with a shrimp po'boy!

Tanya, you're killing me with that cocktail description. It might inspire me to read the book, but it will surely inspire me to make the cocktail!

I got to get me some doctor pepper and some amaretto. Now is this the regular sugar doctor pepper. I don't know where you get the old school version and I have never seen Mexican cokes (the ones with pure sugar) I live in metro NYC area and we are far far away from old Mexico.

I guess you mean do not get the one with high fructose corn syrup.

I absolutely do not think I have "ever" seen a Mexican coke or that variety.

What part of the country are you from?

message 173: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) I hate to say it Bentley, but New Yorkers don't have everything. Although, you might try across the border in Canada. I have seen several products in Vancouver made in Mexico that have slightly different formulas such as hand lotion (of all things.)

Bentley wrote: "I absolutely do not think I have "ever" seen a Mexican coke or that variety.

LOL, Who knew that of all the things I listed, that "Mexican" Coke would be of such interest?! I get mine at a food wholesaler grocery here in Southern Oregon, which doesn't help you at all I'm afraid; but you may want to try a corner bodega. I'm pretty sure that, outside of Manhattan, there are Hispanic neighborhoods that carry imports from Mexico; And yeah, if you're on your way to Stowe and, you happen to miss your turn and end up in Canada, then you can probably find cane sugar Coke there too :-)

And just for the record, I am only very recently from Southern Oregon! I was born in a Maryland suburb outside of Washington, DC and spent most of my life there. I went to school, worked and played in Boston for a few years before returning to WDC. I'm an East Coast girl at heart and am really not cut out too much for rural living; but this is where the work is (kind of ironic since this area suffers twice the unemployment rate of the rest of the country!) I'm smack dab in the middle of spotted owl territory and, a stone's throw away from Big Foot lands!

No need to explain...all of us are on our way to ordering Dr.Pepper from some place in Waco, Texas. Wasn't Waco where they had that incident? And of course, got to go to some corner bodega to look for Mexican coke. Alisa and I are very busy.

message 184: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Bentley, Shabu Shabu is a kind of Japanese fondu, various kinds of vegetables, thinly sliced meat, and tofu dipped one by one into a pot of boiling water then eaten with a bit of sauce. The sort of convivial meal that goes on for hours. I lived in Japan for some years, and I haven't had a proper meal of shabu shabu since I left the country. Really good Japanese food in general isn't easy to find here (I think I'm picky), unless I make it myself.

Kristi...love Thai but have not eaten Nepali.

What is crossfit?

message 188: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) It's a way of working out with functional moves. It incorporates Olympic lifting, gymnastics and body weight movements, and it's really intense. The typical workout lasts 15-45 mins, and you want to pass out after you finish.

Check out Crossfit.com for more info. It's actually hard to describe, but it's hard and very rewarding. It's the prefered way of working out in many fire departments, law enforcement agencies and military units.

9. Animal: river otters and fish
10. Activity anything outdoors, traveling, hanging out in coffee shops

message 195: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Kirsten, so how do you favor your Bloody Mary? Spicy or mild? The standard celery or other favorite vegetable, like a spice bean or pickled okra? It is one cocktail where there are many variation possibilities and people seem to have tightly held opinions about what they like and don't like.

message 196: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten I prefer mine extra spicy with celery, but this summer in outstate Minnesota, they were served with a pickle and olives.
Out at school in Oregon, they didn't add any vegetables at all. It was very odd.
Really I don't care as long as there is vodka and Tabasco sauce involved.

message 197: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) no vegetables? you must have been in Eugene. I like spicy too, any pickled vegetable will do but you can't go wrong with celery - classic. tastes good using citrus vodka, it adds a nice touch. it's a great cocktail.

message 198: by Kirsten (new)
