SOLVED!: Children's book about a guy who goes on a quest [s]

When I was a kid my mother read me a book about a guy (he might have been a prince and he might have been named Gar, or I might be imagining my entire childhood.) Along the way he meets up with various people who can change into other things. One guy can change into either a bee or a hive of bees (again I'm not sure which,) another can change into a rope (again not sure.) The book had illustrations. If this at all rings a bell with anybody, I'd appreciate a shout-out.
