Leigh had made a mistake an posted this under my story Courage.
Excerpt from Jade Seas - a romantic time travel:
“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” I said as I rummaged in my purse for a pencil. What were we doing here? It was dark; it was Halloween and we were in a fricking graveyard.
“We needed to do something to cheer you up. You’ve been down in the dumps ever since you broke up with that piece of bad news you called a boyfriend.”
Eliza stretched a piece of paper over a gravestone as she looked at me anxiously. “I know you’ve got a pencil in there somewhere. You showed it to me earlier.” The faint light made her ebony complexion even darker and her coal black hair gave off a faint bluish sheen.
“Okay, I got it, but I don’t know why you got me out here.” I held the pencil toward her with my hip stuck out so my cousin would know exactly how I felt.
“You’re gonna see.” She turned the pencil sideways on the piece of paper.
I looked around at the old tombstones surrounding the old white church that reflected the scant light. A waist-high brick fence encircled the graveyard.
“Sometimes you find cool things engraved on these old gravestones.”
“Ooooowwwoooo”, sounded from behind Eliza. Then a light moved in the blackness. “Oooooowwooo”.
“What’s that?” I took a step backward and bumped into something. Before I could react I was lying on the ground.
Laughter and footsteps sounded outside the graveyard. The wet ground seeped through my jean skirt. A shiver up my spine reminded me how much I wanted to be in a nice place eating some seafood.
“Jade, what are you doing on the ground? It was just a couple of boys playing a prank on us.” Eliza held her hand out to help me up.
I was half way up when my foot caught on some wet leaves and I fell back again, this time my shoulder burrowed into the wet ground. Now I was officially covered with mud and leaves. The fact that I was wallowing right on the place somebody’d been buried didn’t help either.
Eliza held her hand out again.
“No thanks. I’ll help myself up.” First, I pulled myself to my knees, then held onto one of the gravestones to bring myself to my feet.
Eliza reared her head back in laughter. “Lord, I had no idea you were so scared of ghosts and goblins.” She continued to gaffe.
“I thought black people didn’t go for things like this,” I gave my voice a specific edge.
“What? You been talking to your black side? How does that work?” She tapped her chin. “Something like this.” She jumped to one side. “Let’s see. Black side, my white side wants to know what you think about things that go bump in the night. Ain’t you folk scared of your own shadows?” She jumped to the other side. “”Listen white side. The black side says bring it on.” She doubled-over with laughter.
I wished she’d choke on her words. I casually brushed off my clothes trying to give her the allusion I wasn’t paying attention to her. She just loved to give me hell about being half black and half white.
