I know that some people get hot, but it seems that a lot of authors have their hero sleep in the nude. Maybe it's a standard thing, like a lot of non-interracial books, the heroine has red hair and freckles.

Well put a robe next to you in case of emergencies lol
Maybe wearing pajamas is too dweeby. "Maverick donned his pajamas and slipped under the covers."
Nah, Maverick needs to be nekkid.

Not unless it's called for.

I agree Eugenia. I think that a lot of authors use the naked sleeping as another way of saying the hero is hot and sexy and that's how the heroine should see him as.

Your hero might call for it lol

He might be that type of hero lol
you never know
That's a very interesting question, I've often wondered that exact same thing myself.Arch wrote: "Is it me or does it seems as if a lot of heroes sleeps in the nude? The question is why?"
We don't like clothes in our house either. Most of the time my husband parades around the house in his birthday suit. He and my sons tend to sleep in the nude as well. We don't live in a particularly hot part of the country so its probably just a personality thing. I dunno. I never really asked them. Never felt the need to since it comes so natural to everyone (well them being nude and me seeing them in the nude). I personally can't sleep in the nude. I catch a draft easily, esp when its cold out (I'm so not made for cold conditions and yet I've spent my entire life living in cold climates ... go figure). In summer, I have to have something in direct contact with my skin to feel comfortable, doesn't have to be much, just something; in winter I have to wear something that covers my throat if the temp in room is very low (and that happens to be the way my hubby likes it). Of course, there are exceptions, but even after a little bedroom fun, I have to get up and put something on.
As for characters, I guess the author thinks it adds to their appeal or maybe it's just a true personal trait of the character (since they're "people" too). I've read a few heroes who like to sleep in their boxers or pajama bottoms (for eg Russell in C.J. Carmichael's SMALL TOWN GIRL). But you're right, they're few and far between. Most heroes like being bare-arsed and the heroines like it too. Considering most heroes look like studs right off the pages of GQ, can't say I blame 'em. How about that for eye candy first thing in the morning. he he he
Away from sex, I don't recall Sam sleeping in the nude. I can stand to be corrected.
I don't even think that Noah Clayborne slept in the nude. I didn't really read his book, because I didn't like who he was paired with. I don't recall him sleeping naked in Mercy or Heartbreaker.
I don't recall Mike from Sweet Liar sleeping in the nude. Danielle, do you know if I am right? I don't own the book anymore and it has been a long time, she I have read the book again.
I don't recall Sam from The Silent Cradle sleeping in the nude.
Oh, I can't leave my nerdy baby out. Dave Malkoff. I don't recall reading that he sleeps in the nude.
I guess the author is trying to show the hero's sexiness by making him sleep in the nude.

Man, if he's a stud, he doesn't have to bother putting anything on! Just walk around nekkid, all day every day. It's all good. ha ha ha

Personally, I don't find sleeping in the nude more sexy in a hero. But that's just me.
Personally, I think it's kind of gross when the hero goes 'commando,' aka no underwear under his pants.

Lol, just out of curiosity, why do you think that's gross? What makes it better when he's got draws on?
Because I think it's unhygenic. There are body fluids, cells, hairs, etc (normally shed) that underwear catches and that's the purpose of underwear.
What sort of absorptive capabilities? Aren't they made from cloth, mostly cotton, spandex or lace (if female), like most other types of clothes? And even if the clothes aren't made of these particular materials, the interwoven fibres that make up all cloths are relatively absorptive, wouldn't you say? It's not that big of a deal. I'm just curious. Have never considered it unhygenic for those reasons. In fact, quite the contrary. I think it gives the genitals air and helps to avoid build-up (I'm talking about men here). You've given me something to think about.
I have to say that nude sleeping heroes are wonderful to increase the chances of action. and the heroine obviously gets an eyeful.Heroes that go commando under their clothing, on the other hand, is not as sexy, maybe because I kinda like the undressing factor. Plus, I would also be worried about zippers (and being unzipped during inappropriate occasions). Then my mind wonders to the region on clean clothes. Underwear is nice that you usually change every day (usually). Most guys I know try to reuse clothes, so....

Danielle,
I remember Mike seeing red, when it came to white clothing.

I've gone to college with a woman who made it known that she didn't wear panties. I found that gross. Women have cycles. Plus, just think when she has gone to the store to buy pants or shorts and gone in the dressing room to try them on. Gross! I'm sure that pubic hair were left in the clothes.
If a man doesn't wear underwears and try on pants or shorts, he can leave pubic hair in clothes as well. Gross!

And the reuse of clothes, yeah major ick factor right there. But, if the guy changes his trousers each day, that shouldn't be a problem I don't think.
I prefer my men to wear underwear for the same reason you stated. It makes the unveiling more erotic, but if a guy's preference is to go commando I don't think I'd mind it if he has otherwise good hygenic practices (like changing pants regularly etc). Plus as far as I know men have less bodily discharges as well. Only when they pee and or are horny for some action. :) Or of course, if they're sick with some illness which causes them to discharge irregularly.
I guess its what you are grown up with. My family is pretty chill, so I don't mind running around the house in underwear only. As long as the essentials are covered, really. I know families that do not see each other in any other state but fully dressed. Its kinda crazy, but more skin than usual, it becomes distracting and uncomfortable. In the same way, I can understand that having a nude man around the house would be unsexy and kinda too distracting.
Eugenia wrote: "I've heard that about going commando and I think it's true. Although I'm not a commando kind of gal. I will go braless and that's awesome, LOL."
Are you talking about braless in public?

That is until I saw a lady with itty-bitties in a thin wife-beater that actually were deflated and saggy. I didn't know A-cups could sag!

There's nothing new under the sun. Women prior to us walked in the no stockings, panties and bras shoes.
I don't like wearing stockings or socks, but every blue moon, I will probably wear a pair. It might be years apart.
I like wearing my bare legs.

Hey Arch,There is nothing wrong with a naked man. The more naked the better. Wait..scratch that...there are some dudes I know that I would pay to stay dressed.

Loni,
I think that a lot of authors write their hero as nude sleepers, to show sexiness.
A lot of authors write stories where the heroine has red hair and freckles. I don't see a lot of red head women in my city.
A lot of writers write their heroes as being strong, muscular. No matter if he's a detective.
I know that all detectives aren't jumping off a GQ magazine. Even on TV, not all detective are super hunks.

I saw an episode of HBO's Real Sex that used to come on years ago and they had a nudist colony on that day. Not one sexy man to be found.
Eugenia wrote: "The last time I ironed clothes was like 17 years ago. Bare legs are sexy especially some nice ones. I wear tights in winter, just cause I'm cold and you can get tights in all these really wild patterns and I like that but come summer, out the door with that."
Wow, you haven't ironed clothes in 17 years. Are you by any chance a person that throws your clothes in the dryer to let the dryer takes the wrinkles out?
I haven't worn tights in years. They do come in handy for winter.
I was surprise to see leg warmers at Walmart. I haven't seen those in years, but came across them towards the end of last year. They are good for winter as well.

I understand what you're saying Arch about why even regular guys are always described as muscular. I think it's because a reader wants to picture a sexy hero...not someone scrawny or paunchy that does nothing to inspire lust. Now I have wondered about this in historicals. If a hero is a titled peer that doesn't do any real physical work...how is it that he's muscular and toned? But I guess this goes into that whole desire to picture a sexy man in the reader's mind.

lol! Leg warmers keep the legs warm.
Things go away for a while and then come back with new names.
Eugenia, do you know if leg warmers are still called leg warmers?

I've heard that the best kind of underwear has cotton at the crotch area because it's breathable and it absorbs. Not all cloth has the same absorptive and breathable capabilities. Skin releases toxins and organic wastes that are not ideal. The pubic area is more glandular than the other parts of the body, so there's more secretions. That's part of the reason that changing your clothing and washing regularly is important.
Men don't wipe after they urinate. I'm sure there is some urine ends up in their underwear and clothing if they don't wear underwear. They also release seminal fluid. A very disturbing analysis was done on men's used underwear. A lot ends up in them. Just think about what ends up in a man's clothes who doesn't wear underwear. I'm not trying to judge anyone here. It's my opinion, and I know I'm pretty fastitidious. But it works for me.
