Rowena (rowenacherry) | 25 comments Tagging everyone, right now.

Please remember to log in before tagging, and to make sure that there isn't already a check mark in the box beside the tags... that would mean you've already tagged for that book, and if you tag again, you will negate your earlier vote.

(They're having this problem in another group at the moment).

Best wishes,
Rowena Cherry

message 107: by Rowena (new)

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 25 comments Tagged for Vincent (whom I'd done before), Gary, Michelle, Guido, Shaun, Diane, Delyse, everyone on page 2.

Amazon produces a whirling circle and says "Failed... please try again."

Don't. You'll undo your tag. Instead, refresh the page and see if the tag did stick.

Laura Rittenhouse | 53 comments Okay, Everyone's TAGGED. With all of their tags, not just those they've listed as preferred (it probably took me less time to do that than to flip back and forth between their post and their Amazon site).

It didn't take as long as I feared. There are 113 posts in this thread but maybe 25% are actually unique book links. The rest are people letting you know they've tagged you (feel free to let me know). So if you're just looking at this thread, don't run away scared. Tag us please.

message 119: by Laura (last edited Apr 26, 2010 01:27PM) (new)

Laura Rittenhouse | 53 comments Tannia, go to a book and scroll down to just before the reviews. There are tags there. (http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Over-L... is my site as an example) there's a blank space next to an "Add" button where you can write in anything you want. As you type, Amazon fills in and gives you sort of a drop down so you can use common tags. For example, I now have "Women's Fiction" and "Womens Fiction" as tags (not sure who added the second one) because both are avaible. No one seems to clean up or consolidate. Like most things on Amazon, this is up to the millions of users.

You can then search for tags by putting in a tag in the box marked "Search Products Tagged with" on the right side of the listed tags. If you search for "immigrant story" mine shows up (right now anyway) as number 6. If you search for "Historical Fiction" I have no idea where mine shows up - way down the list I assume. This is a popular tag.

It is another way for readers to find books that are about things they are interested in and that people "vote" on whether or not they agree that a book is tagged correctly.

Hope that helps.

Timothy James Dean (timothyjamesdean) | 32 comments Hi! Any other authors and readers - I'd appreciate very much
1) agreeing with "tags" already there on my amazon book page, and amazon kindle...
and
2) scrolling further down and voting "yes" (review was helpful) on each review, starting with my video promo which I posted as a "customer review," (and which I recommend to you fellow authors, because we indies are not invited to supply video "trailers," as are the big guns like King, Brown etc.). It's easy - just scroll down each review, and at the bottom is a button to vote yes (was helpful). 'Course, you'll probably have to sign in with your Amazon account in order to vote!

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 25 comments Tagging everything....

Great idea, but be sure to read what you are tagging, and if in doubt, refrain.

Occasionally --I regret to say-- some Amazon users use tags as a way to immortalize unkind personal comments about an author.

On Todd's group we've had a couple of instances of tags such as "crazy" and "idiot" and "spammer" and worse.

Laura,

Which Communities are you in?

It is possible that readers in the Communities are removing your tags. There are at least 3 ways that other people can negate tags, so just because your tags aren't going up does not mean that authors here aren't keeping faith with you.

:-0

You can also go to any person's profile page, and if you poke around, you can find out how many times they have tagged any given word.

Remember, controversial tags sometimes aren't tagged (not that yours are) because every time a logged-in individual tags a requested tag, they become a member of a Community.

I was taken aback to discover that I am (or was) a member of the Wet Shaving community, for instance.

LOL

Best wishes,

Rowena Cherry

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 25 comments Mary,
Really, you want to give the link to your book page itself. That's the page the tags are on.

http://www.amazon.com/Window-My-Soul-...

The fewer steps a clicker has to go through, the more likely you are to meet with tagging success.

I wrote in Mary Magdalene for you.

message 146: by Rowena (new)

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 25 comments I'd like to share something. Please don't be offended, anyone.

I'm a busy member of the IWOFA community (Infinite Worlds of Fantasy Authors). There are 400 of us, and several of the IWOFAs are Erotica authors.

Recently, one member who is quite religious was appalled to find a discussion of masturbation turning up on the religious group page.

The reason is that members of her religious community had also tagged for erotica communities and the Amazon bots have no discretion.

It's not fair to untag someone because of what they write, and because they tagged for you. What you do in such instances (if they distress you) is grit your teeth, visit the discussion, and click to Ignore the customer who started whatever topic offends you.

That should solve the issue.

Then, in future, don't tag words that might put you in company you find uncomfortable.

Best wishes,
Rowena Cherry

Rowena, I honestly had no idea what "communities" were before I read your post and then went and looked for it. I feel like a greenhorn. I have seen and even commented in threads before, but somehow didn't sees how they might be connected.

Thanks for the tip.

As for people untagging me - I don't think it's happened. I'm new and have had no chance to offend. I suspect people either aren't actually tagging in this group or are not logging in or maybe there is a bug in Amazon.

You mention ways of untagging. I don't know how it's done and I wish it wasn't possible. How can one person basically wipe out the vote of another? It seems to be contrary to the system Amazon put in place.

You are clearly a guru - any other ideas of insights for authors trying to get recognition on Amazon?

Thanks for sharing so much,

message 149: by Rowena (new)

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 25 comments Tania,
You are most welcome!

Laura,
You do not have to offend anyone. Being unknown will do it, so will a cover or title that is not clearly (whatever your tag is) also not being someone's favorite.

Please be aware that the following information should not be abused. I do not recommend untagging people/books just because it's doable.

First and most innocent-- you might have friends who have already tagged your favorite tags, but who went back and tagged a second time, thereby removing their original tag.

Currently, there is an Amazon glitch that puts up a spinning circle and claims that your tag has failed and you should try again. If you refresh the page instead of tagging again, your check mark is usually in place. Had you tagged again, you would have removed it.

Secondly-- You have a mean-spirited and dishonorable rival who has visited your book page and "Disagreed" with the tags on your page. (And sent her friends to do likewise.) See "Agree With These Tags". Click it, and you can either vote "up" or "down". Voting down will remove a tag.

Thirdly-- Some people who are not familiar with your work, but who are passionately keen to see their favorite authors' books higher in the rankings on the relevant Community have given you negative tags, thus negating your friends' efforts.

Anyone can go through the Community "See All Products" and vote Agree or Disagree on every single book/product in the community.

If one's favorite book is 5th in a community, and only needs one more tag to be 4th and on the front page, it is tempting to untag the 4 books with more tags.

Also, anyone visiting a community (even if they have already tagged) is offered the opportunity to agree or disagree that a randomly selected book does or does not "Belong" in the Community.

One has to accept that Amazon is not all sweetness and light. It's anarchic.

Best wishes
Rowena Cherry

On Amazon, above all do not spam the readers' groups. The readers tend to respect authors who behave like readers and who make genuine recommendations of other authors' books (and do not recommend their own).

Are you an Author Central author? Sign up.

Start Discussions in the communities and on your book page that are interesting (not self-serving).

Blog, but read Amazon's blog guidelines first. Behind the scenes stories about your novels is acceptable. Promo pitches aren't.

Do Listmanias.

However, Amazon is not everything. There are forums for readers on Barnes and Noble, and on Chapters.Indigo.ca as well.

Join forces with some other authors who share your interests and genre, and team up.
