Sara, You're good!! Every book you chose is one I have not read, and I will be reading at least 3 of them in the very near future. I love Neil Gaiman, so I'm sure I would have gotten to Stardust sooner rather than later. But I can get used copies of both Seduced By A Scoundrel and The Butler Did It (the economy, you know!). Since I've only read one book by Barbara Dawson Smith - and that one years ago - I'll read SBaS for this challenge, and save The Butler for another. Thanks!

message 102: by Julie (new)

Julie (juliedoe) Thanks, Melody. I'll look through those books and come back and post my choice. I haven't read any of them. Yeah, I'm definitely into UF, PNR and a little bit of sci-fi stuff.

Now a question for our challenge organizer: There are two Julie's doing this challenge. The list above doesn't contain profile links for the pickers, so I'm not sure if I should pick for Barbara or Photojim. Who should I pick for? Thanks!

Annvelwis | 671 comments Emily,

Reading your reviews is a pleasure :)
Ok, so first - I encourage you to read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Covet by J.R. Ward, Moon Called by Patricia Briggs and Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. I know you have those books on your TBR shelf so I'm just sneaking this in here ;)

My recommandations:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
Wildest Hearts by Jayne Ann Krentz
The Bride by Julie Garwood
Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie
Naked in Death by J.D. Robb
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I hope you'll find something you like :)
Enjoy!

I'm glad to see you found something. I loved going through your shelves and comparing our ratings. I've never done that before - I didn't even know you could. I've really only been using this site for a few months even though I created an account a while ago and I only had one friend who doesn't share similar tastes at all. I had to try really hard to not make my TBR shelf a decade longer then it already was while looking through your books. A few 5 stars snuck in that I'm sure to enjoy immensely. Thanks!

message 105: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) Joelle:

This is my 1st time doing a pick it challenge and it was tougher than I thought.:) You're more of a PNR/Romance reader and I'm more of a UF/Fantasy/YA reader. There were a bunch of UF series I would recommend, but you have most of them on your TBR list, except Karen Chance, so she's my UF recs for you.

Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, #1) by Karen Chance Touch the Dark Karen Chance
This is the 1st book in her Cassie Palmer series--I love the series, but some people think her Cassie series is a little too hectic & fast paced, so you might want to try her Dory series instead:

Midnight's Daughter (Dorina Basarab, #1) by Karen Chance Midnight's Daughter Karen Chance
This is the 1st book in her Dorina Basarab series--it takes place in the same world as the Cassie's with some cross over characters, but you do not have to read the Cassie's to enjoy the Dory's, and some people find the Dory's to be less hectic than the Cassie's.

And then these 3 are books I loved and I recommend them to everyone.

These 3 are all YA, but not silly teeny bopper YA, but awesome suspenseful, heart wrenching YA. LOVED all 3 of them.

[image error] The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins
Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta Jellicoe Road Melina Marchetta
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak The Book Thief Markus Zusak

And last but certainly not least, I recommend this one to anyone who has not read it. It's a doozy (over 800 pages) but I didn't even notice, I loved it so much.

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon Outlander Diana Gabaldon

Pollyanna (polly8) | 300 comments Great choices for me Ari, I think I'll go with Mark of the Demon but I might just read all of them anyway :)

Idaliz: I see you are a fantasy fan and so am I. Here are some that I have read that I think you'll like.

Touch the Dark by Karen Chance - I gave this 3 stars but a lot of people really liked it. You might really love it whereas it wasn't a favourite of mine so I'll give that to you as a choice.

Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton - I love this series and I'm sure you will really like it.

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr - If you love faeries, then this is one of the best in my opinion.

Hope you like these choices :)

message 108: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Carrie & Laura- It sure is a bit of a challenge, in and of itself to pick something the person you're paired with will like. Everyone seems to be doing very well though, even am adding a few books mentioned to my TBR.

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Jennefer, i had so much fun trying to come up with recommendations for you. I hope you like at least one of these, but if you're in the mood for something else let me know and i can make other recommendations.

1.Robyn Carr- Virgin Riverfrom her Virgin River series or if you want to try something more chic-lit by this author, The House On Olive Street.

2.Lauren Dane- Coming Undone, if you're not OCD because it's the 2nd book in the series. May have to skip a brief m/m scene, that relates to the first book in the series which is why am not recommending it. Not sure if you'd be open to trying a menage story.LOL

3.Susan Donovan- He Loves Lucy it's just a great book.

4.Kate Angell- Squeeze Play her Richmond Rogues series, if you're in the mood for some slight humor in a sports series.

5.Susan Elizabeth Phillips- It Had to Be You Chicago Stars series, another sports series with really good plots and characters.

*If you want to read something darker or rather some PNR then i suggest:
1.Dark Lover by J.R. Ward
2.Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon
3.Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian
4.A Quick Bite by Lynsay Sands

You cannot go wrong with these.

message 111: by Michelle B (new)

Michelle B (karenshell) | 19 comments Hi Cathy,

I was in awe by your list! I saw many off of yours that I will have to put in tbr list later. This is my first pick it for me challenge so I hope you like the books I picked for you.

My recommendations are:
A Quick Biteby Lynsay Sands
Succubus Bluesby Richelle Mead
I'm the Vampire, That's Whyby Michele Bardsley
Ravenousby Sharon Ashwood
Red-Headed Stepchildby Jaye Wells
Wicked Lovelyby Melissa Marr(if you like the YA genre)

The first 3 are quick and fun reads and have the pnr element to them. I'm currently reading Ravenous and am loving it so far, so thought I would share! Red-Headed Step child is a great book for an urban fantasy read.

Hope you like the choices!!

message 112: by Ari (new)

Ari (moochew12) | 159 comments Yay! Glad you found one that appeals to you, Pollyanna.

message 113: by Joelle (new)

Joelle | 15 comments Melody after going through your selves here are some possible books I think you might like

1) The Name of the Windby Patrick Rothfuss- "The Name of the Wind--the first book in a trilogy about an orphan boy who becomes a legend. Full of music, magic, love, and loss, Patrick Rothfuss's vivid and engaging debut fantasy knocked our socks off."

2) Spellbent by Lucy A. Snyder - When an innocent spell somehow opens a portal to Hell, young mage Jessie Shimmer manages to kill the demon about to stomp on downtown Columbus, Ohio, but she loses an eye, a hand, and her lover and mentor, Cooper. (UF)

3) Shadow Bladeby Seressia Glass- The heart-pounding first in Glass's Shadowchasers urban fantasy series piles on the twists and turns in a supernatural Atlanta where everyone has a hidden motive. The Gilead Commission discovered Kira Solomon's gift for psychometry when she was 12 and trained her to fight Shadow Avatars. Now 25, she mostly tries to focus on her day job as a freelance antiquities expert. Her former mentor, Bernie Comstock, brings her a 4,000-year-old Egyptian blade to authenticate, and one touch tells her it belonged to an immortal Fallen from the shadow world, who's still seeking it. When a demon murders Bernie, Kira confronts the immortal, now disguised as a young man, but she can't deny that the dark blade calls to her, as does its handsome owner.

4)The Better Part of Darkness by Kelly Gay- Charlie Madigan is a divorced mother of one, and a kick-ass cop trained to take down the toughest human and off-world criminals. She's recently returned from the dead after a brutal attack, an unexplained revival that has left her plagued by ruthless nightmares and random outbursts of strength that make doing her job for Atlanta P.D.'s Integration Task Force even harder. Since the Revelation, the criminal element in Underground Atlanta has grown, leaving Charlie and her partner Hank to keep the chaos to a dull roar. But now an insidious new danger is descending on her city with terrifying speed, threatening innocent lives: a deadly, off-world narcotic known as ash. Charlie is determined to uncover the source of ash before it targets another victim -- but can she protect those she loves from a force more powerful than heaven and hell combined?

If these don't appeal to you tell me and I will add more.

message 114: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Hi Britta!
We have a lot of the same tastes so I hope you like what I pick, I know I did (lol)!

1. The Dark Divine by Bree Despain
2. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
3. The Devouring by Simon Holt
4. Deadly Little Secrets by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Now book 3 I recommended only has minimal romance but it's a great read. And since we just became friends I will recommend more in the future too :)

Regina Polli | 177 comments Rossy

This is my first time in this challenge and I hope I`m doing this right.

I don´t know if you like historicals, but this two I recommend:

Diana Galbaldon´s Outlander serie. V.1 is Outlander. - James Fraser and Claire Randall are wonderful characters and I`m sure you will like them!

Lucy Monroe is an author that I saw in your list, but this book - Paranormal Historical Moon Awakening - isn´t in your TRB. It´s a very good story and the dialogues are great!

For Contemporary I suggest some authors that I didn´t find in your list:

Audrey Niffnegger - The Time Traveler´s Wife.
It´s a great story - in the beggining it´s a little complicated, but it´s a true love story!

And finally - Souvenir by Therese Fowler

If these don't appeal to you tell me and I will add more.

Thanks Joelle!

The only author you recommend that I've heard of is Seressia Glass, so good job on finding new authors for me!

Shadow Blade looks great, but I can't get it here (none of the libraries actually have copies yet, although it looks like a few will, so onto the tbr). But I do have one of her titles on my list for Feb already, No Commitment Required, that I'll look forward to reading even more, knowing she's recommended. :O)

And, while my first choice isn't available, I was able to order Kelly Gay's The Better Part of Darkness, my second choice, and I'm looking forward to reading it as well. :O)

Going by your shelf I see we have a lot of books in common, so I'm going to suggest a few of my personal faves that I didn't see in your collection. If the suggestions I make don't sound like they'd interest you, just let me know and I'll try again. :)

The Trouble With Valentine's Day by Rachel Gibson; it's an easy light-hearted romance with lots of humor and quirk. It definitely doesn't take itself too seriously.

Blue Aspen by Tenaya Jayne; it's a bit of a psychological romance...in a good way. I found it new and refreshing amongst all the cookie-cutter romance novels I'd been tearing through lately.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl; I just finished this one and loved it! If you liked Twilight I think you'll go for this one. It's a YA PNR with Casters instead of vampires.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger; I know it's already been talked about a lot and there's already a movie out based on it, but this book touched me on a level that no other romance has. I found it beautiful and truly moving.

That's all I have for right now, but like I said, if none of these interest you don't hesitate to tell me. :)

Sherrill Gaijinmama,

You have such a great to-read list that the first two books I wanted to suggest were already in your queue.

They were:
Hush Hush
Shiver

But...I think I have found an author not on your list, Jude Deveraux:

Legend
The Mulberry Tree

Enjoy!

Sherrill

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Ah Regina, am sorry i really don't like historicals. I did tried a few a while back but i just can't get into them. The blurbs do sound good though.

I placed the 2 contemporaries that you recommended in my TBR pile and i plan on ordering them some time next week. I can't read them any time soon though because i'm not in the mood for non-HEA. Just the other day i was wondering if i couldn't force myself to read Dear John before the movie is released.

I hate to ask, but can you recommend something else for me? I'm open to any genre as long as it's not historical or one with some kind of HEA please. *bats eyelashes with an air kiss*

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Michelle,

You have a pretty eclectic collection of books in your GR shelves, so I'm going to throw choices from random genres for my recommendation. Keeping my fingers crossed that you will at least like one. :)

A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss. One of my all-time favorite historical romance, with a Beauty and the Beast theme, plus I have a huge crush on Christopher Seton.

Enchanted, Inc. by Shanna Swendson where Sex in the City meets chick lit/urban fantasy. Light-hearted and fun complete with a shy, endearing wizard hero.

Out of the Night by Robin T. Popp. I guess I have to recommend at least one vampire book, this one using a south american legend as the source of vampirism. Straight-forward paranormal romance.

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, just because I saw that you like the Kitchen God's Wife. I like this one better, but don't forget the tissues.

If none of these interest you, let me know.

Gigi | 1149 comments Hi Harper!

This is my first time doing something like this. So, I hope you find something on here that you enjoy! I went through your GR to get an idea of what you enjoyed. Hopefully, I made at least one good choice. My list of suggestions are long. I tried to pick award winners or books with mostly high ratings. Sorry, I couldn't narrow it down to 5.

Mystery
-The Big Sleep- Raymond Chandler

Series- Paranormal
-The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter
-Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon
-Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

Historical Romance
-Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas (3rd book in the series but it doesn't appear as though you need to read the books in chronological order and this book appeared to be a huge hit with reviewers)
-The Duke And I by Julia Quinn
-The Secret by Julie Garwood

*fingers crossed* Let me know what you thought.

I'm nervous! LOL

Thank you Sherrill! I suppose I could give Jude Deveraux a try...but Shiver really, really sounds more up my alley and I am not familiar with the author even though the book is on my TBR shelf. That said, I really shouldn't spend any more money on books (yeah, right as if!!) so I'll go to my two favorite used bookstores and, if they have any of the four you recommended I'll trade for them.

Emily Laura

Wow. I had my work cut out for me. :^D You have quite a few books on your shelves, both read and TBR, that are my 'go to' recommends, so I'll just have to pull out a few that, while I do enjoy them, they're more love 'em or hate 'em reads.

First off, I'll recommend Gone by Michael Grant. It's a young adult but I see you have a dysotopian and post apocalypic shelf and I think it fits rather nicely in that sort of niche. It is the start of a series, however, and whether or not you want to get into another one is probably going to sway you.

I'll also recommend Mr. B. Gone and The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. I don't see any of his on your shelves and I enjoy him immensely. Both have different feels to them and depending on which sort of mood you're in, I think that either would make a nice read for the month.

Since you have a few Stephen Kings on your shelves but not an awful lot, I'll throw in recs for Carrie and The Stand: Complete & Uncut. Both I enjoyed a lot and either would work, depending on how quickly you read (they're pretty much at either end of the spectrum as far as page counts go. :^D).

And finally, I'll recommend Size 12 Isn't Fat by Meg Cabot. While I find her an author I can't read multiple books back to back, she does have a cute sense of humor and this is one of my favorites of hers. Though, again, it is the start of series.

Hope you can find something you'll enjoy amongst the recommendations. :^D Let me know what you think.

:^D Aww, well, thank you, Annvelwis. I enjoy writing the reviews, sometimes as much as reading the books. ;^D And you've given me quite a few too choose from. I'm sure I can find something and I'll post and review once I'm finished.

Kristine | 10 comments Mary, looking through you books I see we have a couple in common that we've both read... I have a few recommendations for you,

Dark Lover by J.R Ward- great vampire series where the guys just kick a$$

Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon- amazing series, but big investment (book 20 is coming out soon)

Darkfever by Karen Moning- I saw that you have one of her Highlander books, this is a series about the Fae and it is awesome

City of Bones by Cassandra Claire-great mix of everything paranormal, it's YA but great

Animal Attraction by Charlene Teglia- amazing heavy erotica, i love this author

Fallen by Lauren Kate- this is a new YA novel that I was very impressed with, unlike anything i've read, about angels

I hope you find something that catches your eye, all these books are amazing!

Thank you for picks!
I'm torn between The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle and The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I think I have Goldman's book on a bookshelf somewhere... but Beagle sounds intresting too, heh. I can't decide so I'll try to read one or both of those, ok?
I also added Dark Sister by Graham Joyce to my TBR (heh, I remember the time when I swore to myself not to have more than 100 books there...). I'm quite certian I'd have difficulties getting that book in Feb, but it looks good :)

tosca (catatonichataholic) | 742 comments Sara - your bookshelf was an adventure and a half! I asked my tweeps what 'dystopian fiction' was and immediately got some responses that have now inspired me to find a way to fit that as a them into one our library newsletters :)

I've chosen to go with 5 possibles - 4 romance & 1 general fiction:

- Historical romance: Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas (book 1 in the Wallflowers series) * heroine decides to tempt a nobleman into proposing marriage to save her family
- General romance: The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks * the story of Noah (from The Notebook) and Allie's daughter and son-in-law's relationship that has drifted apart over time
- Contemporary romance with major sizzle: Luke by Cheyenne McCray * if you're not ok with the act the Smart Bitches term 'the new oral' then bypass this one LOL
- Strange Brew edited by P.N. Elrod * paranormal romance/urban fantasy anthology
- General fiction: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon

If none of these catch your fancy just reply and I'll find more :)

I had to google this since I can't get BHB for cheap enough in Canada and the library doesn't have it.
They also don't have Luke so on to something a little less steamy...

I'm going to read Strange Brew since my PNR is extremely limited. I'm adding all the books to my TBR though.

That´s OK. I`m more of Paranormal and Fantasy romances so here are some recomendations of series that I like very much.

Alexis Morgan (Palladines) - Dark Protector is the first one and my fav.

Lynn Viehl (Darkyn) - If Angels Burn.

Jean Johnson (Sons of Destiny) The Sword is the first (I have to read the last two of the series)

Marjorie M. Liu (Huntress) - The Iron Hunt (I love the hero, but it is more Urban Fantasy).

I saw that you have Sarah McCarty in your list, but you haven´t read her books yet. Caine´s Reckoning is a wonderful reading and I think you will enjoy (although it´s historical...)

Thanks Cathy! Great recommendations, I think I'm going to go with Kitty and the Midnight hour.

Hi, Gigi! Thanks for the recs. I’m going to choose “The Duke and I.”

I thought “The Big Sleep” sounded interesting, too, but I’m more in the mood for an out-and-out romance novel. I’m going to put it on my to-read list, though!

I’ve actually read “Fantasy Lover” by Kenyon and “The Secret“ by Julie Garwood, but it was a long time ago and I’m still in the process of adding all of the books I’d read before I joined GR. I also started “The Darkest Night” by Gena Showalter, but I didn’t really like it/couldn’t get into it.

Thanks again! Do you mind if I add you as a friend?

~Harper

Hi Harper!

You're welcome.

I hope you enjoy "The Duke and I." Let me know what you think, good or bad. "The Big Sleep" was the first Philip Marlowe novel so it should be an interesting read.

Harper, you may absolutely add me as a friend!!!

Jennefer (jenneferpracticex3) | 247 comments Hi Gigi,

Wow your shelves were full of books and authors I am not familiar with at all! LOL So I am just going to recommend some of my favorite recent reads and hopefully something will stand out.

In no particular order....
Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh This is the first book in her Psy/Changling series. Good romance and good world building as well, just a great PNR and I have very much enjoyed the entire series.

Just read A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught and very much enjoyed it. Probably my favorite historical romance I have read so far (still new to the genre).

Another historical romance I just loved was My Lady Notorious by Jo Beverly. This is a faster paced adventure type story. It was just a hoot!

And a few that are not true romance novels...

Faking It by Elisa Lorello If you are lucky enough to have a kindle read this! and if not get Kindle for your PC for free here and read this! LOL It is available in print as well but kinda pricey (only .99 for kindle). I loved this book so very much, just a great chick lit, pulling your life together, learning how to heal, getting real book. Oh, I just can not say enough how much I loved this book. I finished this a few days ago and can not get it out of my head.

The Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee This does not have the obligatory HEA of a true romance novel but it was a very cool futuristic love story between a girl and her robot. It is also a bit of a coming of age story. This is different but a really interesting read. I love the authors style and I know I will be reading more of her work.

Rashi's Daughters, Book 1: Joheved by Maggie Anton This is a historical novel about the daughter of a famous Talmud Scholar from Medieval France. If you choose this read the bit at the end first where the author talks about what is true and what is fictional. It is an interesting historical read but also a wonderful love story. This was educational and entertaining. Very highly recommended.

Hope something here appeals to you. If not let me know what you are in the mood for and I will try again!
